I'm a workplace wellbeing specialist - cool, but what does that mean?

It means I work with HR to deliver wellbeing outcomes.

I've been doing this since 2011 - it's what I love to do with my time and what I'm best at.

I've designed wellbeing programs and strategies for dozens of companies and tens of thousands of people across a range of industries. 

My mission is to help organisations create healthier, happier, and more productive workforces by providing effective and evidence-based wellbeing initiatives, whatever that may look like (no two programs are ever exactly the same).

1. Book a Team Wellbeing Dynamics Workshop: For teams who want to become high functioning units.

2. Hire me as a consultant: To help you figure out where to start, what to do and how to do it when it comes to workplace wellbeing.

3. Have me run a psychosocial safety hazard and psychological safety assessment: We all want and need them but it’s tough to know where to start with these.

4. Get your very own Workplace Wellbeing Specialist: To upskill your people in health and wellbeing (through regular individual consultations) and work with you to optimise your work environment to make it easier for your people to be healthy and well.

5. Book me as a speaker: Conferences, off-sites, webinars, retreats, lunch and learns, I've done 'em all and I'll do 'em again. I can and will talk to your people about all aspects of health and wellbeing including wellbeing dynamics, health fundamentals, mental resilience, habit change and heaps more.

Last Thursday marked a pretty special day for Kinex health.

We delivered our Wellbeing Enrichment Program to our first (of many) regional early learning centres. 

Regional and remote communities often get forgotten about in the conversation of wellbeing and professional development - but we're changing all that.

It begins with Griffith East Preschool, and soon we'll be all over the country, visiting areas that don't normally get visited, but that are just as important as the big cities. 

There's some pretty exciting stuff in the works on this front (involving a caravan and a 20-year long dream) so watch this space!

Workplace Wellbeing Specialist | Building Sustainable High Performance in Teams | Replacing EAP with a Better Way

Saturday was a proper and unexpected energy fill up for me. 

I recharge a little differently than most. 

Of course I like massages and yoga and saunas and all that jazz, but Saturday had none of that. 

It was coffee with my parents in the morning, putting up our Christmas tree at lunch, then a day spent on the couch with my partner and a few beers while we watched the cricket together. 

We then went to a pub packed with 20-somethings and finished watching the single best day of test match cricket I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a few). 

Being part of the energy of that entire experience was like being plugged directly into the wall - especially for someone who usually gets their energy from being alone. 

Now I feel ready to get stuck in to a big 4 weeks to end the year - which is fortunate, because it’s going to be a very big 4 weeks. 

It makes me curious - what’s an unorthodox source you get your energy from?

Getting Michelle to create resources for us is kind of like getting Max Verstappen to do school dropoff for you.

They're super over-qualified but somehow they agreed to do it because they feel it's worth it!

Michelle Li is a provisional Psychologist, and she's also a yoga and breathwork teacher, and mindfulness facilitator.

That gives her not only the clinical grounding to know what works and why, but the skills to apply it in the real world. 

Before agreeing to work with us at Kinex Health, Michelle worked in management consulting at Deloitte, focusing on people, performance, and change.

Michelle creates the breathwork resources for our Wellbeing Hub (available to all of our Wellbeing Enrichment Program clients), and they're second to none.

When it comes to LinkedIn, it’s important to know how to separate the signal from the noise (and there’s more noise than ever).

Here’s how I’ve done it:

I have a clear purpose for being here
The reason I’m on here is to connect with and learn from interesting people, to teach usable wellbeing skills, and to find and connect with potential clients and vendors. 

I curate who I follow
Don’t follow people just because you know them. Follow people who teach you, challenge you and inspire you. 

I unfollow people regularly.
If I don’t find value in your posts, I’ll unfollow you. Simple as that. 

I reach out to people.
If someone is doing something I find interesting, I’ll reach out to them and let them know.

I turn on/off notifications
As people/posts pop up in my notifications, I curate them carefully and turn off the ones I don’t care about and keep the ones I do. 

I engage with interesting posts/people
Every time I see a post that genuinely interests me I’ll like and/or comment on it so more people see it (and I see more like it). 

I take breaks
Sometimes I get absolutely jack of the platform so I take a break and stay away until I feel like I can handle a bit more. 

It’s no secret that on this platform it’s getting harder and harder to separate the signal from the noise, but there’s still a lot of value here - you just have to look for it.

Burnout prevention ≠ performance maximisation.

They’re different games:

1. Minimum standard (equilibrium).

What do you need daily/weekly/monthly to stay level?

Sleep. Exercise. Nutrition. Alone time. Workload you can carry indefinitely.

Think bank account: energy in ≥ energy out.

If more goes out than comes in, you go broke.

Equilibrium = not gaining, not losing. Know this line.

2. Ideal standard (peak performance).

What does it take for you to excel?

Higher-quality sleep. Cleaner nutrition. Meaningful connection.

Optimised daily movement. Focused work blocks. Zero distractions.

Cognitive, emotional, and physical recovery.

This is the athlete mindset: if nothing else got in the way, how would you operate?

The gap between those two lines is your sustainable performance zone.

Design your days to live inside that range.

Life happens. You’ll dip below the minimum, like an unexpected bill draining your bank account..

Your job is to avoid living there - and keep climbing back toward the top of the zone.

Level up as a team by learning each person’s zone.

Spot when someone’s below their minimum.

Have the skills and habits to help each other operate inside the zone.

Set your minimum. Define your ideal.

Build systems that keep you between them.

It's an AI-powered microwave that chooses whether or not to cook your food based on the smell it will produce.

All you do is put your prospective meal in it - it analyses it using highly advanced thingies, and then chooses one of three options:

1. It decides your food is acceptable and heats it up for you to enjoy (eg. lasagne, Pho, tomato or cream-based pastas etc.).

2. It decides your food is ok but shouldn't be heated all the way - just enough to 'take the cold off it' (eg. vegetable dishes, chicken, most soups).

3. It decides your food is completely unacceptable and disposes of it via a chute in the bottom (eg. anything with seafood in it). 

I call it the Waitaminutewhatareyoucooking and it's set to revolutionise the office space.

The simple reality of wellbeing in teams:

Healthy teams are built by 2 (intentional) things:

1. Building health skills:

- Communication.
- Conflict management.
- Energy management.
- Stress identification and management.
- Foundational health: sleep, movement, nutrition, recovery.

2. Designing an environment where those skills are easy to use

- Sane workloads (not 100% capacity).
- Real flexibility (not performative).
- Time to move.
- Leaders who role-model self-care.
- Useful support.
- Equipment that works.
- Clear, open communication.
- Effective meeting guidelines.

That's how you systemise wellbeing.

Having a healthy team isnt luck, it's a skillset applied daily, which anyone can learn.

When you pair skilled people with a supportive system, you get a self-sustaining loop:

Better habits - better energy - better work - better culture - and around and around.

So, to get the best our of your people, invest in both: skills + systems.

That's how you build a healthy workforce.

One way to fail as a leader is to see leadership as an add-on to your role. Like an optional extra. Technical expert first. People leader second (or maybe even third or fourth). It's something you do only if there's time.

When we see our role in this way, we ultimately deprioritise people. The 1:1s get cancelled. The coaching and mentoring don't happen. We get stuck doing all the work instead of developing the team. It's a vicious cycle. And when there's a problem, we call HR and ask them to take over, not realising we've been avoiding a core part of our role the whole time. 

If you have a team, leadership isn't an optional add-on to your role. It is the role.
