Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ killed this one thing when they realized it spiked churn. 

And if you’re doing it, stop. It’s literally one setting

The thing?

STOPPED sending “payment successful” receipts every time a subscription renewed.

When they realized that their “Your payment of $12.99 to Company X was successful” message was actually creating 2-5% MORE monthly churn

They stopped immediately. 

Why?

Every receipt is a reminder of cost.

“Do I still use this?”

Companies retaining 98%+ subscribers NEVER lock cancellations behind a call wall because they understand one key thing:

Pissing off customers is bad for business.

Call to cancel is the dumbest thing you can do as a SaaS operator because

a) it’s shortsighted
b) creates an extremely negative customer experience 

Both of which kill subscription growth

I get the intent: cut initial churn, maybe throw in a “special offer” on the way out.

But when you wall off cancellations, three things happen fast:
 ❌ Customers feel trapped → anger spikes → discount ignored
 ❌ Forced churn → zero chance of reactivations → LTV tanks
 ❌ Bad exit experience → no referrals → entire loop lost
 (And yes, chargebacks rise when frustration peaks.)

You didn’t just lose the customer.
You’ve burned the entire bridge back to them. 

Creating friction just delays the inevitable AND kills any chance of winback. 

The truth: Not all cancellations are permanent.
About ⅓ are just pauses: tight budgets, burnout, busy seasons.

But if your brand leaves a good taste, the return path still exists. 

Fix this:
Make it easy to cancel. 
Offer discounts only after you’ve left the cancellation option wide open.
You’ll retain more customers this way. 

Then run a winback campaign.
The data shows: Positive offboarding + structured win-backs consistently recover 20-40% of churned users.

TLDR:

A customer who left happy is the easiest one to sell again.

Make cancellations easy. 
Cheaper win-backs. Higher lifetime value. Stronger growth loop intact.

He grew Codeacademy from $10M to $50M ARR and a $525M exit. But what he revealed permanently rewired how I think about growth. 

Here’s what their Head of Growth, Dan Layfield, shared:

Let’s say a new product update dropped a company’s churn from 25% to 10%. 

“Cool, 15 point drop in churn, we can expect modest improvements across all metrics like MRR, retention, LTV etc.”

WRONG

The impact is anything but modest. 

Here’s what actually happens:

Life Time Value (LTV) = Monthly Price ÷ Monthly Churn Rate (%)

Drop churn from 25% to 10% (at $20/month) and watch what happens:

$20 ÷ 25% = $80 LTV
$20 ÷ 10% = $200 LTV

$80 → $200 LTV = A whopping 250% jump in LTV

250%!!

Each churn point you shave off literally exponentially compounds your LTV. 

AND the lower your churn gets, the more every point is worth:
At 10% churn, a one-point drop adds ~11% to LTV.
5% → 4%, it’s a 25% LTV boost. 

For companies at scale, that’s where the hidden leverage lives: small optimizations, massive reach. 

This is why I won’t shut up about fixing churn.

Especially the kind your customers *didn’t* choose = involuntary churn.

Where they were happy users, but their card expired, or the bank unexpectedly flagged it as fraud. So their payment never went through, and their retry system failed to get them back. 

And now…they’re gone. Customers you already paid to acquire, who had literal months left of LTV, accidentally gone. 

And it didn’t have to be that way. 

Think about how simply tightening your payment failure recovery system to lower involuntary churn by 1–2% could literally *exponentially* boost your LTV…

An $18M ARR SaaS silently churned $340k/yr from one hidden thing. But shockingly, that wasn’t even their biggest problem. 

The real loss was the $1.7M leak in LTV - Growth already paid for, but never got to realize.

So while it shows up as a blind spot, because payments feel like an infrastructure problem, not a growth lever, the math proves otherwise.

It’s actually one of the highest-leverage, lowest-lift fixes available to Growth teams.

People have been saying SEO is dead for more than a decade.

But my favorite part is getting to share what I've learned with other people

I was having a conversation with friend who also teaches and I asked them WHY they enjoy teaching.

They said something along the lines of "I enjoy sharing knowledge with others"

Good answer!

But mine is a little different.

When I am sharing what I have learned, it usually is from a place of "You have got to check this out... this is so cool!"

And not only am I learning from books, NotebookLM has completely changed the way we can learn things quickly.

Whether we realise it or not, our brains constantly take shortcuts. 

Psychologists call them cognitive biases and every consumer is influenced by them every day. 

We like to believe we make rational choices, yet we often react faster than we reflect.

Dan Ariely says humans are predictably irrational, and the more you look at the psychology, the easier it is to agree with that concept.

Here are some of the ways we are influenced, whether we realize it or not...

→ Loss Aversion
Losing hurts twice as much as winning feels good. That’s why “Don’t miss out” often outperforms “Save today.”

→ Scarcity & FOMO
When something is limited, desire increases. Countdown timers and “Only 3 left” aren’t just tactics, they speak directly to a primal survival system.

→ Anchoring
The first number we see quietly defines what “expensive” or “cheap” means. A high original price makes the discount feel bigger than it really is.

→ Social Proof
We copy others when we’re not sure what to do. Reviews, UGC, and “10,000 people have already joined” tap into our herd wiring.

→ Reciprocity
Give first. Receive later. Free trials and samples activate an ancient rule of social fairness.

For myself, there have been way too many times I purchased something simply because it had over 1,000 5-star reviews. 

Is marketing about manipulation, or is it about understanding the triggers already deep inside of each of us, getting us to do what we already want to do?

Most companies aren't hiring for a culture fit, they're hiring for a vibe fit

They are checking for chemistry when they should be checking for character

They are checking for personality when they should be checking for values

But that's the wrong way to hire for a culture fit.

A person's personality may look great when things are easy, but who are they under pressure?

In your next interview, ask these questions to uncover a person's values and character:

"Think of a time something didn’t go according to plan. How did you adjust?"

"When have you had to make a decision that wasn’t popular? What guided your thinking?"

"What’s a project you’d do differently if you could go back? What did it teach you?"

Industry specific experience in DTC Ecom is overrated.

This is coming from someone who has owned marketing across 12 different industries... beauty, fashion, wellness, home goods, and everything in between.

What I have seen over and over is that the fundamentals always win. 

If you understand the ICP on a deep level
If the product is strong
If the messaging speaks clearly to real desires and real problems... you can adapt to almost any vertical.

The strategies, the acquisition structures, the creative thinking, the testing methodology, and the customer psychology all transfer.

Every industry may have its nuances, but the core levers do not change. 

If you can build trust and guide buying decision, the industry is basically irrelevant.

Specialization might help, but strong fundamentals scale everywhere.

Here is your formula for sustainability in DTC... 

P + O + M = long-term success

Most brands look at this and jump straight to “let’s tweak the ads.”

That's the wrong move.

You have to diagnose which lever is actually weak.

*Product*
Do people buy again without discounts? 
Are reviews specific and enthusiastic?
If not, the problem might be with your product, not your ads.

*Offer*
A great offer is not just 20% off...

It can be:
 • A bundle that increases value
 • Buy X, Get Y
 • A bonus/free gift

Is the perceived value disproportionately higher than the price? Is it instantly understandable?

*Messaging*
Does your hook stop people in 1–2 seconds?
Are you using the language your customers naturally use?

Generic messaging creates generic results.

*Rate yourself 1–5 on each*
If Product, Offer, and Messaging aren’t at least 4s, scaling will feel expensive and unpredictable—no matter how much you tweak targeting or creative.
