Reporting to the CEO I was responsible for the Portable Media Player and Personal Navigation Device Business unit at 3Dlabs / Ziilabs, alongside my role as VP of Board Design / Platforms.

This Business Unit brought together various engineering disciplines together with marketing and partner activities in order to address the needs of the PMP and PND markets.

As GM, many of the day-to-day office activities supporting a staff of 80 people such as purchasing, administration, building maintenance, IT, operations, etc. all fell under this position.

3Dlabs

Whilst VP of Board Design at 3Dlabs Inc. Ltd. I managed hardware design teams, both in the UK and in the US to bring multi-award winning 3D graphics cards based on the GLINT and Permedia Graphics Chips into production at 3Dlabs. This would also involve working with EMS partners in the UK, Ireland and Taiwan, and all the major PC OEM’s worldwide to ensure successful new product introductions.

After the sale of 3Dlabs to Creative Technology and Ziilabs was formed, I managed the UK hardware design team, responsible for reference and validation platforms for the range of ZMS multimedia processors. I also provided training and support to our other hardware design teams in Singapore and China on the use of the ZMS processors. The UK hardware design team also provided design support services for these teams, and to customers integrating the ZMS processors into their own platforms. This design support included: schematic review, layout review, PCB simulation, and companion component selection. The UK hardware design team were also responsible for validation of new silicon when it arrived; this involved testing the devices and verifying all the device interfaces to ensure the device ran under various load and environmental conditions whilst running at the desired frequencies and voltages.

As Director of Workstation Programs I was responsible for turning marketing requirements into new graphics cards for the PC workstation business. Working with the marketing department in the US and the Graphics Chip and PCB engineering teams in the UK and the US, I made sure that when we had a new Graphics Chip, we had suitable PCB designs ready for these chips, that would suit the workstation market, and that we had samples of the PCB’s for the sales and marketing teams to take to the OEM’s within days of new chips arriving.

I joined as Graphics and Image Processor (GIP) Task Force Leader, responsible for custom microcode and hardware for the GIP products, to satisfy a diverse range of customer needs.

As the company’s products evolved from bit-slice designs to multiple Intel i860 processor cards I moved on to being the Chief Applications Engineer. As CAE I assisted customers around the world with both Hardware and Software designs based around our multi i860 processor cards.

When the company went through a management buy out to form 3Dlabs Inc. Ltd I took up the role of Customer Services Manager, where I was looking after all aspects of Customer Support.

I joined Marconi Radar in Leicester as and Electronics / Electrical Engineering apprentice.

In 1982 I joined the TEPIGEN group, to write applications to assist in the generation of 3D models and terrain databases used by the 3D day / night flight simulator.

In 1986 I was seconded to the Teleview project (Level 5 Videotext system for Singapore Telecoms) as a software engineer for the graphics unit. I progressed to being the Software Engineering Manager for the graphics team, leading a group of engineers and contractors to validate a custom graphics ASIC and deliver the drivers for graphics sub system.
