Today a fintech founder dropped by to ask if I’d join as an advisor.

Sharp guy with a clear problem space and early product direction. Good energy.

But within a few minutes, I noticed something I’ve seen many times. He assumed venture capital is the default path.

So I asked him one question:
“Why do you want to raise?”

He said, very enthusiastically:
“I want to build a unicorn.”

That’s when I realized he didn’t fully understand how VC actually works.
Not his fault. Most founders don’t in the beginning. I didn’t either.

We ended up talking for about 90 minutes with an earthquake in Dhaka right in the middle.
We went through the basics: how funds operate, what return expectations mean, founder dilution, burn pressure, and how raising money locks you into a certain pace whether you are ready for it or not.

Some businesses are better off bootstrapped or seed-strapped.
Some ideas don’t need venture speed.
Some founders don’t want their entire life to become a race against time.

Fundraising has become so over-glorified that people forget it is just one tool. It is not a requirement, not a status symbol and not a measure of success.

By the end, he had much more clarity.
Not because of anything dramatic. Just because someone finally explained the incentives, the trade-offs and the reality of the path he thought he needed to take.

It took me 7 to 8 years, several mistakes and a lot of pressure to understand these things.
If someone can learn it in one conversation instead of the hard way, that is a win.

He came in talking about unicorns.
He left with a clearer idea of what he actually wants to build and what makes sense for his stage.

Work Update:

I’m moving on from Truely and looking forward to a period of tinkering and experimenting. It's been a great year building a global product and doing GTM across markets. 

Thanks to Simon Landsheer, Jean-Patrick Bisson and the rest of the team for the journey.

Truely is on an excitement trajectory and I will continue supporting the company as a shareholder, and as a user on all my trips 🌍

I learned something yesterday from an AI engineer who was in the valley in the 90s and did his thesis on neural networks back in the day.

We call today’s LLMs “foundational models,” but almost all of them are fundamentally trained on text.

But the real world isn’t just text.

We experience reality through multiple dimensions like sight, sound, movement, tone, physical interactions, behaviour.

So how can a model be called “foundational” if it only understands one slice of how the world actually works?

The sense is: what we call foundational today is only foundational for this moment in AI.

The world is multi-sensory, so the models that eventually define our era will be the ones that reason across all these dimensions and not just predict the next token.

He trained with a legendary professor in the AI/ML lab at a leading university here.

That professor and I are in a Whatsapp group discussing collaboration. He has offered access to his AI Researchers, AI engineers and Data Scientists.

A-Players update

5 weeks ago, our pipeline was basically zero.

Today, we’re working on 5 active roles — if all goes well, that’s ~$15k in gross margins. I don't care about topline as it's a service biz.

We also brought in friends in Paris and Italy to help out with demand 🇫🇷 🇮🇹

The new challenge? Operations. Now we need to tighten fulfilment, speed, and quality. We don't have repeatable processes yet.

But that’s the game. Solve one problem at a time.

I didn't think I could bootstrap, but I guess it's real and happening.

Who you work with has a far bigger impact on your startup than you think.

When I started my first company, I chose people purely based on skills. 

But the world isn’t objective. Investors definitely aren’t. Perception + signalling matters more than you think.

And if you're building an enterprise or mid-market SaaS, this becomes even more real. PLG alone won’t cut it.

Your first 10 customers almost always come from personal networks. And that is directly tied to the rooms you and your co-founders have been in: consulting, big tech, top business schools, venture-backed startups, etc.

When you're building for a single local market, it’s harder to attract people with those backgrounds. The top 0.1% builders are usually playing global games.

But if you think globally from day one, the way Zoho, Freshworks and others did in India — you widen your support surface area instantly. You become capable of attracting co-founders and early partners with real credentials and track records, as long as you can articulate your own value, vision, thesis and thinking framework.

I just got off a call with a classmate from Western University who went on to Ivey, London Business School, and then built a Sequoia-funded startup. We may or may not end up working together, but we were jamming.

The point is this:
Thinking global from day one changes who you can work with. And who you work with changes everything — strategy, product quality, insights, investor perception, and most importantly your ceiling.

And if you don’t yet have access to those networks?
Go where they exist.
Do a master’s abroad.
Join Entrepreneur First or Antler.
Put yourself in ecosystems where global ambition is the default.

Manual CRM updates are outdated.

I want to text an AI agent the moment a deal opens or moves, and let it handle the admin.

Make it voice-enabled, and now pipeline management becomes something you can do while walking between meetings.
