Humility is a great teacher.

Humility earned through arrogance is painful but nonetheless effective. I know this from experience.

As a leader of a recruiting firm, I was controlling, untrusting, and frightened. My behavior nearly cost me everything. Yet through a pivotal experience on a non-profit board, I witnessed something transformative: the power of collaborative leadership and conflict resolution.

We achieved outcomes no single faction could have accomplished alone. By listening to detractors not to convince but to understand, we turned critics into collaborators.

This lesson hit home when one of my employees challenged my boneheaded response to a crisis. Her simpler approach, which I resisted, proved far more effective. In that moment, theory collided with reality, showing me that intellectual understanding alone is never enough.

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about creating conditions where great ideas thrive and others can step into leadership.

Today, as a keynote speaker and leadership transformation raconteur, I bridge the gap between organizational theory and practical implementation. For two decades, I’ve been in rooms where the future of people, products, and companies was on the line. Leaders, founders, and teams bring me in when pitching won’t work. I help them stop pitching and start inviting, making their ideas something others recognize, remember, and want in on.

I’ve been on stages with TED, in workshops with Fortune 500s, in boardrooms with investors, and in classrooms with teenagers. 
The rooms change, but the problem doesn’t: if others aren’t intrigued by the future you see, they won’t act on it.

The problem is simple. In moments of certainty, a pitch works. In moments of ambiguity, it doesn’t. They have to convince themselves. And when they do, they invite you in. And you get to stop pitching.

I believe that every decision about you and your career is made in a room that you are not in. 

I am here because of many decisions made in rooms I wasn’t in. Sometimes I was offered my dream job, sometimes I was shown the door. In each case, it was the story about me, and what I was known for, that impacted the result.
