Peter is Co-Founder and CTO at Unstoppable Finance GmbH a Berlin based company with the mission to empower people around the world to access, interact with and unlock financial opportunities of the decentralized economy. Before he was CTO and MD at Börse Stuttgart Digital Exchange, the first regulated digital asset exchange in Germany. Before he was CTO and co-founder at solarisBank. 

Peter has a technology and entrepreneurial background. In 2008 he founded a software engineering consultancy out of university, grew it profitably to 27 employees. In 2014 he came to Berlin to join the company builder Hitfoxgroup and Finleap that focuses on fintech as CTO. Blockchain and decentralization fascinates him from the moment he got in touch at the end of 2016. Since then he has shaped the vision to bring decentralized finance to reality.

I have a MSc in Information Systems from the University of Münster and I'm a former lecturer at the University of Applied Sciences Münster and Data Science Summer School at University Saarland, and I'm a current lecturer at CAS Lucerne for Blockchain topics.

I'm a frequent speaker at events and conferences. Wow. Wir wurden gestern mit AllUnity auf der Bitkom #digifin Veranstaltung zum "Fintech des Jahres - Newcomer" ausgezeichnet. Das hat für mich eine besondere Bedeutung ... 

Erst mal durfte ich zum zweiten Mal auf die Bühne, wie schon vor Jahren mit der Solaris SE. 

Außerdem sehe ich hier eine wesentliche Entwicklung: jahrelang wurden Fintech und Krypto als zwei verschiedene Branchen behandelt, dabei sind beide dafür angetreten die Finanzinfrastruktur grundlegend zu verändern.

Wie wir inzwischen gelernt haben, wurde der Fintech Bereich in den letzten Jahren ziemlich ausgewaschen. Nur wenige wesentliche Disruptionen haben sich durchgesetzt. Nur wenige Player wie zB SumUp haben es geschafft an der Infrastruktur etwas zu verändern. Ansonsten ist diese weitestgehend gleich geblieben. Der Rest ist in Kooperationen mit Banken oder anderen Institutionen aufgegangen. 

Ich sage schon lange, dass wir mit #Blockchains, Decentralized Finance (#DeFi) und #Stablecoins nun eine neue Infrastruktur sehen, mit der man #Fintech, #Banking und #Payments komplett neu denken kann. Globaler, schneller, transparenter und günstiger. 

Auf der Veranstaltung gestern sprach ich von "neuen Schläuchen". Ich bin überzeugt davon, dass wir eine neue Welle von Fintechs sehen werden, basierend auf Stablecoins, Blockchain und DeFi. Als "Fintech des Jahres" dürfem wir als Krypto Unternehmen uns nun auch zu den Fintechs zählen. Es kommt nun zusammen was in meinen Augen immer zusammen gehörte. Wir werden in einer paar Jahren sehen, ob wir neuen Fintechs nicht vielleicht sogar das erreichen werden, was die Generation vorher immer erreichen wollten: eine echte Disruption der Infrastruktur.

MoreMarkets released their 2025 crypto yield report.

TL;DR

Retail yield participation is heavily centralized with CEXs serving an estimated 200–230M unique users, of which 20–36M (10–15%) earn yield. 

Binance reports 250M+ registered users and internal surveys showing 25% using Earn, while Coinbase discloses 3.5M+ retail stakers and USD 9.4B in customer assets staked. 

By comparison, #DeFi reaches only 0.5–0.7M users across its largest protocols even though Lido holds USD 40B+ in staked ETH and Aave, EigenLayer, Ether fi, and Pendle collectively attract user counts ranging from 26K to 549K.

The data confirms that DeFi captures large pools of capital but remains a minority retail channel by more than an order of magnitude. 

The behavioral insights reinforce this gap. 

60%+ of users hold assets for under 1 year, and only respond to yields above 6%, with 33% seeking short term gains and 55% describing #yield as a passive income tool. 

Yield avoidance is driven by liquidity and security fears:

👾 35% worry about lockups
👾 34% prefer to keep assets liquid,
👾 33% fear platform failure, 
👾 28% do not understand yield mechanics
👾 23% cite security concerns. 

Additionally, only 6% find technical terms intuitive and  36% prefer simple language such as earning interest on your #crypto. 

The top adoption drivers are:

👾 Instant withdrawal (47%)
👾 Guaranteed fund protection (41%)
👾 Regulatory style safeguards (33%)
👾 Stablecoin or fiat payout options (17–21%). 

💭 What is the data telling us?

1️⃣ Retail does not treat crypto yield as a savings product. It treats it as a liquidity-sensitive risk asset.

Retail users do not mentally map yield to banking or #fixedincome, and they fundamentally refuses duration risk in crypto, even when rewards increase. 

Instead, yield is framed as a compensatory premium for holding a volatile #asset that must remain liquid at all times.

Users want #liquidity first, protection second, and return third. That hierarchy mirrors behavior in high volatility emerging market currencies rather than in consumer savings markets.

This means future yield products that mimic fixed income will not win retail adoption unless they embed near-perfect liquidity and capital protection.

2️⃣ DeFi is not lagging due to UX gaps but because CEXs have become de facto yield-aggregation monopolies.

Despite managing massive capital across different protocols, DeFi's retail user base is disproportionately small compared to CEXs indicating a structural capital concentration among institutions and whales. 

This mismatch is due to #CEXs capturing the retail relationship (trust, attention, and custody) by offering ‘one-click’ yield products, which has relegated DeFi protocols to primarily supplying underlying yield infrastructure while #exchanges centralize consumer access and aggregation.
