BioShock has sold over 43 million copies, generated half a billion dollars for Take-Two Interactive. Any rational executive would have greenlit BioShock 4, collected the check, and called it a career milestone.

In 2014, Ken Levine walked away.

“I knew it was gonna be a very long period of R&D,” he tells me, “and I didn’t know how to do that at a company that had 200 people in it.”

So he left. Founded Ghost Story Games with a skeleton crew. Gave himself permission to spend five years, five full years, just figuring out what the hell he was even trying to build.

The first line he wrote for what became Judas: “I like eating at vending machines because I don’t have to interact with waiters.”

That’s the man who walked away from half a billion dollars. The guy who chose machines over people. And he just spent ten years building something that helps other people feel less alone.

Yesterday I was in the midst and glamour of the North East Chamber of Commerce Inspiring Female Awards and today, well today has been quite different as I've sat alongside the team at Citizens Advice Gateshead for a week-end shift.   

In this article I share just a very small snapshot of what we've dealt with today, and some of it might shock you.  Believe me when I tell you this is not an exceptional day, it's a very typical day but in sharing it with you I hope you will agree compassion, dignity, respect and kindness are the only currency that truly matter.

When Ngozi speaks people listen, an inspiring woman who uses her voice and platform for great things, building communities and creating the conditions for love, peace and acceptance. 

Ngozi is joined today at the VONNE (Voluntary Organisations'​ Network North East) Annual Conference for a panel discussion by Caroline R. , Jill Hardie, James Alan Fildes and Lesley Storey all sharing stories of how their communities have experienced the rise in racial tensions across our region, emphasising the importance of collaboration and solidarity.  

My take away - People build communities not politicians, there’s a role for each and everyone of us in making our country, our region, a welcoming and warm place for everyone so instead of talking about how awful things are, ask “what am I doing to make a difference? Where can I affect change?”. It’s easier than you might think, a litter pick, a warm word, a shopping trip for a neighbour, or regular volunteering for a cause that’s close to your heart.

NEW EPISODE OF 'THIS IS THE NORTH': Empty Boxes: How One Woman in Gateshead Built a Lifeline for Thousands

I recently sat down with my friend and colleague Juliet Sanders for a conversation that reminded me exactly why I do this work.

In 2016, Juliet delivered two unwanted sofas to a house in Gateshead. What she found stopped her in her tracks: five children under seven, no furniture, and a mother who wrapped empty boxes for Christmas because she had nothing to give them. She made a game of it—stacking them up, knocking them down.

"We came out of the house and looked at each other and thought, what do we do? We can't just walk away."

That moment changed everything. Juliet thought maybe they could help 50 families that first Christmas. They supported 719.

Today, Feeding Families works with 366 partner organisations across the Northeast, providing food and essentials to tens of thousands. When Juliet first posted asking if anyone needed help, 200 people responded within an hour. Crucially, it wasn't just people asking for help. It was people saying: "If I knew who to help, I would help." That recognition, that communities desperately want to support each other but lack the infrastructure to do so, became the foundation of everything that followed.

Juliet's own story provides context for her fierce determination. She once lived for a week on a bag of pasta. She's survived domestic violence, put herself through college working any job she could find, and spent years searching for her birth family (discovering ten siblings she never knew existed). "When you've been in really difficult situations, there's nothing really left to fear," she told me.

Now, as she prepares to retire at the end of this year, Juliet is stepping back with extraordinary grace and self-awareness about founder syndrome. "The work matters more than ego," she explained. It's vanishingly rare to see this level of insight among leaders.

Feeding Families exists because our social safety net has holes. Lots of them. The question is: do we keep making those holes in our society bigger, or do we finally commit to mending them?

A great night for the North East of England at the BusinessCloud  Northern Leaders Award, with first in class trophies going to  Steph Capewell , Nicola Wood, Mads Howard MBE and Paul Blake.

I recently sat down with Ray Laidlaw, founding drummer of Lindisfarne. You know the songs - Meet Me on the Corner, Fog on the Tyne. What you might not know is what Ray's been building for 25 years since.

In 1999, Ray's friend Sammy Johnson, a working-class lad from Gateshead who'd just made it as an actor, sadly died aged just 49 whilst training for the Great North Run. Ray helped organise a tribute show. It sold out immediately.

That one-off tribute is now Sunday For Sammy , a charity that's given £700,000 in grants to young performers. Not massive sums. Bus fare to London auditions, a decent bow for a cello, three months' rent to finish writing a play.

When Ray tested whether to bring the show back after COVID, arts organisations told him the same thing: "The bottom rung of the ladder was missing."

Sunday for Sammy isn't nostalgia, it's the infrastructure it provides. It's successful artists saying: we climbed this ladder, now we're reinforcing the bottom rungs so others can climb too.

📣 On the day of the UK Autumn Budget… a reminder of what really counts.

While today’s headlines will focus on tax thresholds, spending pledges and political positioning, there’s another story about the North that rarely makes it into the budget speech and that's the human one.

The latest edition of  This Is The North newsletter features the wonder that is Juliet Sanders, the founder and Chief Executive of Feeding Families (UK) and is entitled “11 Empty Boxes, Full Hearts”.  It shines a light on what it means for communities and people when the state retreats, covering: 

🟦 what communities give when resources are stripped back
🟦 how policy gaps show up in real lives, real kitchens, real streets
🟦 the emotional labour of holding neighbourhoods together
🟦 why resilience shouldn’t be required, but it keeps showing up anyway
