The older I get the more I value honestly and integrity, people who give an honest account of themselves and their situation. Isn’t that always the best way to start a conversation?

As for me, I did okay at school but didn’t really apply myself fully, it wasn’t until I started work than I got serious, completely focused on being good, being efficient at whatever I was asked to do. As an Apprentice Printing Technician my education started in the photographic and stencil department. I was quickly getting through a day’s work with time to spare, so asked “what do I do when I’m finished”, the Manager shrugged his shoulders and said, just sweep-up and keep the place clean. I spent so much time doing that, they called me Sweep! I’ve been called a lot worse since.

I’ve always been focused on the here and now, never planning a career path or working towards the next move. That’s not really been a conscious decision it’s just the way it is, I get passionate about the job, the journey and that seems to serve me well. I haven’t applied for a job since my first one when I was 16 years old, I've always been invited. 

My personality suits my profession, I do like a nice process, for data and logic to be applied to situations. All stacked up and thought through nicely. It still baffles me when others ignore the data and make uninformed decisions! Even people who should know better and their number appears to be growing, or am I becoming a little more critical, there’s a thought! 

Always the fit guy in the crowd, accustomed to saying to my friends, “if fitness is important to you, you’ll find the time.” Now I’m struggling to find the time much to their amusement. I do still make an effort but the endurance stuff I used to do will probably stay in the past.  I do have some nice war stories about those days though. 

I do love my dogs and currently have three Frenchies who keep us busy almost all of the time. Like most things in life, “you get out what you put in” and I get lots from them. They teach me as much as I teach them. Dogs can tell us all a little about trust and how to earn it, there’s no fooling them.

Over the years my sense of humour has landed me in trouble, I take after my mother and just can’t resist lobbing in a comment or finding something particularly funny and losing it and I mean completely losing it. That’s a burden worth bearing, all things considered 😊

That’s when I connected with a guy called Mark Sommer from Pennsylvania on this platform.

I can’t remember why we originally connected but there was a good vibe from the start.

We’ve become digital friends and although we work in completely different fields, we meet in the middle.

We’ve been on podcasts together and we watch each others shows…but we’ve never met in person. 

Today I opened my mail to find a box with a lovely hand written note and a load of Sommer Energy Technologies merch, what a great start to the week..!

If you know your motorsport you will notice that Mark’s company branding tips its cap to motor racing and legacy motorsport brands.

Mark knows a thing or two about engines, compressors and all things mechanical and over the years we've been connected it’s been amazing to see his sons grow up and get into the industry.

This platform offers us the opportunity to to do lots of things, sometimes it’s as simple as finding good people and building a relationship.

I’ll wear this merch with pride and promise that one day, I’m going to walk into his shop unannounced…just to surprise him.

The online world has created an interesting phenomenon...

Some people are confident on the keyboard and hesitant in person.  Others can keep the attention of a room full of people, but fall flat online.

Its only ever a problem when it becomes a problem...when there is a gap. When your signals don't match and people start to question which version of you they are really dealing with.

“I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like…”

It’s an old cliché that’s been around since the early 1900’s highlighting the subjective nature of art appreciation.

I’ve been painting by for years, it’s like meditation for me.  I would like to say I’m an abstract expressionist, maybe I am.  Some would say I just move colour around to make shapes, one of my friends says that my pictures look like a monkey played with its own s**t…..you can fill in the blanks….as I said, subjective 😏

Some people like it, some hate it, most are indifferent…it’s the nature of life.

Recently I was invited on a podcast on the subject of social media content.  The host had looked at my content and was asking some deep questions, one of which got me thinking…

“When you make a video or write a piece of content, what are you hoping is the reaction…?”

A great question…I responded.

“Having the ability to create and produce content is a gift.  To have someone spend precious minutes of their life watching or reading what you made is an even greater gift, that I don’t take lightly.

A few years back I decided to employ 3 themes to my own content creation….

Education Emotion Entertainment 

If I’m making something intended to be educational, it should have an emotional and entertaining edge.  If im making something intended to be entertaining, it should have and educational and emotional edge….etc

The hope is that after time, all content will contain all 3 themes.

I’m always thinking about the viewer, what would catch thier attention and what’s the pay off….why would they continue watching or reading this?…Im not sure I always hit the mark but, the trying keeps me on my toes.

I don’t ever want to get lazy with content, that’s why I have themes for a while and evolve and change them.

For me, it’s never about ‘look at me, I’m doing a thing’ it’s about ‘I’ve made something for you and I hope you get something from it’…if I don’t think it’s doing that, I don’t make it”.

So that’s the advice I give to most people about their content here…define yourself, be as different as you need to be to pull out of the sea of vanilla, make content for people, give people something in return for the investment of their time and attention and always be prepared to change direction and evolve.



This picture is called Blackwater, it sits behind my wife’s desk at home, she loves it.  I see it most days and every time I see something I hadn’t seen before.

Leadership signal...

The first pillar in Modern Commercial leadership.

I've seen this many times in businesses, even in some I've worked in.  From the outside everything looks solid, good leadership, experienced teams with a lengthy and sound reputation...but on the outside, the environment has shifted.

Markets are harder to read, confidence is shaken...people start paying closer attention to how others are interpreting what is happening.

Whilst the leadership team is busy working through new strategies and plans, views are already forming elsewhere.  Investors, customers, partners and even the people inside the business are listening to whoever is helping them make sense of the market flux.

Over time those voices begin to shape how the market thinks.

Digital Credibility...

The third pillar of Modern Commercial Leadership.

Most of us want to be credible in our work.  Whether we are running projects, designing systems, selling solutions or leading a business....being known as credible matters.

People who work with you want to trust your judgement, they want to feel confident that you know what you are doing.

What I've found interesting in the last few years is how that judgement forms is these days...

Long before you meet, people already have the capability to pay attention to you or not...we leave a footprint on digital channels, that footprint is either building credibility, confusion or dead air.

Some treat this space as a journal, somewhere to stay visible, others treat it as somewhere to build their credibility...

Digital Credibilty forms through consistency, judgement and usefulness over time...there is no shortcut or easy path but once it starts to bed in, it changes the course of every interaction that follows.

Cross Functional Influence...

The second pillar in Modern Commercial leadership.

We've all been there, the sales process seems to be going well.  You are getting all the right signals.  The prospective client say the meetings are good, they like the people and they understand your solution, surely its a done deal...but something is holding them back...they hesitate.

When you scratch a bit deeper its rarely about price or features...its about confidence. They get what you do but are still not quite sure how you operate...and how you will operate when things get difficult.

History tells us that if this is an issue in the sales process, they have already started looking elsewhere to find that confidence.

Buyers have been reading, watching and listening long before your meeting.  If they are only seeing good news headlines from sales and promotional content from marketing, they fill the gaps with other voices.

This is where Cross Functional Influence changes the dynamic.
