Before I started out in marketing, I spent 15 years in youth work, convincing sceptical teenagers to trust me. And I was *really* good at it.  

It turns out, winning over sceptical humans is a highly transferable skill.

Hey I'm Gav,

I’ve spent the last decade in the music industry (artist, manager, educator, founder).  Over that period I’ve toured Australia with the likes of Rufus Du Sol and Ballpark Music, worked on records that have been streamed more than 50 million times, started a label that had a released sampled by Grammy Nominated artists PARTYNEXTDOOR and launched a platform called Your Favourite Team that was educating the next generation of creators in the music industry.

I co-founded Loose Change with LA based management company Vitalic Noise (Bag Raiders, Hermitude, Miami Horror) a community for songwriters and producers.

I moved into tech/startups where I built new communities from the ground up at Innovation Bay and Ennovate (Entain).  The parallels between life as early stage founders and those of artists, has allowed me to build strong relationships with founders and the wider ecosystem.

OUR UQ Ventures CHIEF STUDENT ENTREPRENEUR FOR 2026 IS.....

We’re stoked to announce Varun Pillai as our 2026 Chief Student Entrepreneur.

At 21, Varun is balancing building and scaling his travel startup Tripzy (which was part of ilab last year Tyson), he's just been named a New Colombo Plan Scholar (heading off to Singapore in July), he's working part-time in the corporate world, completing his undergraduate degree, all while supporting other founders from across UQ.

And now, he steps into the role of UQ Ventures’ 2026 Chief Student Entrepreneur.

What we loved most about Varun’s story is that not that long ago, Varun wasn’t even sure what Ventures was. He joined Validate (David ❤️‍🔥 ) in Semester 1, 2024, almost by accident. It’s the story that we love to tell. It’s not always about starting a business, but about challenging yourself to see a different future, and that's exactly what Varun has done.

He realised through our programs that these skills aren’t just for “startup founders.” They’re life skills.

The Chief Student Entrepreneur isn’t about a title. It’s about showing other students what can happen when you say yes. It’s about creating rooms where more students feel confident to back themselves.

When we asked Varun what success looks like at the end of his year, he kept it simple: more students getting involved and realising what’s possible.
That’s it.

Varun’s journey started in a Ventures program he wasn’t even sure he needed. Saying yes changed everything.

I’m mentoring Anish, founder of Guin.ai, who’s part of the latest Startmate cohort 🎊

Guin makes videos searchable, no more watching hours of footage and manually scrubbing.  Upload your video, tell it the scenes you want and pull the edit together in minutes not hours. 

There were definitely early signs Anish was an incredible founder (selling his first startup to Freshworks, scaling Freshchat to $13M ARR, and building and launching Atlassian’s Atlas) and after spending time with him, it’s clear why.

His focus on deeply understanding the customer, building product with intent, and his ability to process complex problems quickly and adjust his thinking is seriously impressive.

CAST - Centre for Arts, Sports and Technology partners with AIPC ❤️‍🔥 -200 Convention Centres, across 55 countries and 900 management-level professionals.

At the beginning of last year (thanks so much to Craig) I was invited by Sven Bossu and Steph Martin to speak at AIPC and Asia Pacific Incentives and Meetings Event (AIME) conference to talk about AI Agents and more broadly tech adoption within the industry.

It was an awesome opportunity to meet leaders from some of Australia’s and New Zealand’s convention centres (including John from Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre who became our first venue member, thanks mate) and importantly gave us a clear insight into how CAST - Centre for Arts, Sports and Technology could support AIPC's mission to keep their members across global trends and where the industry is headed.

Which is why today we’re (Jono, Ella) stokeeddddd to share that CAST has partnered with AIPC to share early stage startups from across the events space with their members as part of the AIPC newsletter.  

Honestly can't thank Sven and Steph enough for the support, these are the partnerships that are the first step in supporting the industry to become more tech aware.
