With my 20-year history at Lawrence Tech as an interdisciplinary scholar, I am grateful to serve as the Interim Dean of the AACSB-accredited College of Business and Information Technology (CoBIT). Embarking on this new journey, I will assist the college in leveraging LTU's STEM and design-focus to help learners harness Industry 4.0 technologies and innovation. I will also provide the support needed for learners to develop critical thinking, business acumen, research experience, and professional skills.

It is an exciting time to lead. I am fortunate to have dedicated faculty and staff who work collaboratively to foster engagement, accelerate innovation, and amplify the impact of business education. Together, we aim to create a shared sense of responsibility to have a positive impact on society.

Interim Dean

Matthew L. Cole, PhD is Associate Professor in the College of Business and Information Technology at Lawrence Technological University, and the chair of the Lawrence Tech Assessment Committee and the Institutional Review Board. He is a strong proponent of inter-disciplinary research collaborations at Lawrence Tech and manages the annual Research Day and Presidential Colloquium.

Dr. Cole, a graduate of Cleveland Institute of Music and Eastern Michigan University, holds a PhD in Integrated Social and Cognitive Psychology from Wayne State University. Cole teaches undergrad and graduate courses in human resource management, principles of management, and business statistics. He also teaches introductory psychology and clinical psychology for the psychology program 

Supported in part by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), Cole’s HR course is part of LTU’s course-based undergraduate research experience (CRE). Students conduct empirical research to address the following research question: “What should employers and HR managers do to increase employee retention in Gen Z workers?” This question is timely in today’s highly competitive global business market, especially with a multi-generational workforce. Results of the research may help employers and HR managers to anticipate workplace needs and possibly change HR strategies to increase employee engagement and retention of Gen Z workers. 

In his business statistics course, Cole teaches students to use R and Tableau to analyze real world data.   

Cole has published journal articles and book chapters on the science of teams, team conflict, team leadership, entrepreneurship, research methods and models, the neuroscience of the self, positive organizational scholarship, Appreciative Inquiry, SOAR (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, and Results), and SOAR-based strategic thinking, planning, and leading.

Cole is an editor for the international journal Frontiers in Psychology.

As Assistant Professor of Management I serve as a committee member and chair on doctoral dissertations for the DBA program, I teach Business Statistics, Research Design-Quantitative Methods, Entrepreneurship, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and Supervision and Management, and conduct research on Science of Teams, Team Conflict, Team Leadership, Cognitive Styles in Problem Solving, Strategic Thinking Capacity, Positive Organizational Scholarship, and SOAR (Strengths, Opportunities, Aspirations, Results).

As an Assistant Professor of Psychology, Dr. Cole played a prominent role in establishing the Lawrence Tech Institutional Review Board (IRB) and still serves as the IRB chair, reviewing all student and faculty research with human participants. As co-chair of the Research Support Services Committee (RSSC), he has been a strong proponent of inter-disciplinary collaborations, working closely with staff, faculty and students from Advancement, Architecture, Arts & Sciences, Engineering, and Management, on contracts, grants, and research projects.

• My varied academic and professional career began in 1985, when I received a Bachelor of Music degree from Cleveland Institute of Music/Case Western Reserve. NYC followed with a professional career in the entertainment industry as a musician, recording engineering, audio producer, film producer, and recording studio and production company co-owner of Soundtrack City, NYC. 

• 1999, MS degree in Clinical Behavioral Psychology, EMU; limited license psychologist.

• 2002, MA degree in Biopsychology, WSU; NIDA predoctoral fellow investigating the behavioral effects of opioid tolerance and dependence in the behavioral pharmacology laboratory of Alice M Young.

• 2003, doctoral training in Cognitive and Social Psychology across the Lifespan (CaSPaL) with a minor in Biostatistics; Ty Partridge, dissertation chair. Supported by a GRA under the supervision of Bonita Stanton, professor, chair and chief of pediatric medicine Children's Hospital Michigan. 

• 2003, joined Lawrence Tech as an adjunct faculty for the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences. 

• 2006, Senior Lecturer of Psychology at Lawrence Tech. 

• 2008, defended PhD dissertation, "Investigating The Cognitive Processes That Mediate Protection Motivation Theory: A Parallel-Process Latent Growth Modeling Analysis", which was awarded the Best Dissertation Award “Social Sciences” 2006-2008, by the WSU Graduate Council.

• I currently teach business data analytics and biostatistics using R, JASP, Mplus, Minitab, and SPSS.
