And so we kick off 2025's Kendal Mountain Events Festival.

Jacqui Scott and Steve Scott launched the new B2B Outdoor Connections event. Joe White brought together a fantastic array of provocative thinkers and speakers on #marketing, #storytelling and #outdoorculture.

The highlight for me was the conversation between Jolyon Varley & Tijana Tamburic. It was great to hear voices from outside the outdoor industry into the space to inspire more brave and culturally relevant storytelling.

And as expected, the #CreativeAssembly by Outside Of Ordinary in the evening was electric. Ian Hogg & Chris Conlan bringing together thinkers and doers from across the industry.

Here, Paris Bethel (of Opening Up The Outdoors) challenged the outdoor industry with this hard-hitting message: "The way the is outdoors being marketed to us isn't pioneering, wild or free." And she's right. It's the same story being recycled over and over again. Conquer. Tame. Control. (This was full circle back to Jolyon & Tijana's morning take.)

All to say reinforced my view that:

Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools we have to shape the world around us. Stories don’t just reflect our culture, they create it. So to build a better world, we need better stories.

Dan Yates did this artfully in calling outdoor brands to join in supporting EOCA European Outdoor Conservation Association. But also encouraging brands to tell the stories that matter. The stories of the people in places we visit and adventure in.

The outdoors is a place of inspiration for everyone.
So let's make getting out accessible to everyone.

What a wonderful way to kick start Kendal Mountain Events Festival.

Tijana Tamburic (of FEMALE NARRATIVES) and Jolyon Varley (of OK COOL) discussing the future of brand storytelling.

A beautiful contrasting conversation between short form and long form storytelling. A juxtaposition I struggle with as a creative and consumer.

I LOVE long form, traditional storytelling, yet I crave short bite size content.

But the takeaway for me is that we’re moving away from one story that captures everyone, towards more tailored, personalised storytelling for niche segments of your audience.

For me this comes down to one thing: knowing what you stand for. Having an opinion. And standing firm.

It was great to see Buffalo Systems Ltd at Kendal Mountain Events a couple weeks back.

I've been a long-time fan of Buffalo jackets, and their presence at KMF signalled a return of energy into the brand.

After Ben Fogle (and others) bought the Sheffield-based business this year, I've been fearing they'll move everything to Asia. And while I'm not convinced this isn't going to happen, I am overjoyed to see the brand coming back to life after years of being hidden.

To me, Buffalo has a real opportunity to champion doing outdoor apparel differently.

They are local makers (here in the UK).
They keep products in the range for decades (not days).
They hardly ever change colours.
They build rugged clothing that works.

Buffalo is the epitome of outsider thinking in an industry that is following the same trajectory as fast fashion.

I really hope they build on the heritage of the brand.
Because it'd be oh-so-easy to break it.

12 ways you can use storytelling to create positive change in the world.
No. 2 The Public Narrative Framework by Marshall Ganz

I first came across this framework in the fantastic book, Get Together, by Bailey Richardson, Kevin Huynh & Kai Elmer Sotto. As soon as I heard (I was listening) them talk about the three stories you can use to unite a community around a cause, I had to learn more.

Marshall Ganz is no lightweight. He's a longtime community organiser and Harvard Kennedy School professor. Moreover, Marshall played a key role in designing Barack Obama’s 2008 grassroots field strategy.

In short: he knows his sh*t.

Anyway, enough of the background, let's dive into it.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗡𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸
A simple but powerful structure made up of three parts, told in this order:

1️⃣ Story of Self
Why you are called to act. This is about sharing the values and experiences that have shaped you — making your motivation relatable and real.
It answers: Why am I here? Why do I care?

2️⃣ Story of Us
Why we are called to act. This connects your personal story to the shared values, experiences, or challenges of a community, organisation, or movement.
It answers: Why are we here together? What do we share?

3️⃣ Story of Now
Why we must act urgently. This lays out the current challenge, the stakes, and the opportunity — ending with a clear call to action.
It answers: Why must we act now? What is at risk if we don’t?

When done well, these stories inform AND rally people.

Because they answer the three big questions every audience is asking:
Who are you? Why does this matter? And why now?

No.1 – 1st December.

The Golden Circle, by Simon Sinek

Alright, this one's controversial. The Golden Circle is hackneyed and cliché. It's quoted in almost every "strategy" meeting and frankly I'm over it. It also get a lot of hate from people who (I think) have misunderstood what it's for (see the p.s. line for more).

BUT...

It's a wicked good basic framework for telling stories of change.

Why → How → What

Why.
This is your belief. The deep conviction you hold about how the world should be. When you name your Why, you’re giving people a reason to care before they know the details.

A story that starts with Why says:
“Here’s the world we believe in. Here’s the values we refuse to compromise on.”

How.
These are the guiding principles, methods or behaviours that express your belief in practice. It's how you show up. How you act on your values. How you bring that belief to life. The How builds trust. It shows your integrity.

What.
This is the tangible expression of your belief or behaviour. What you do, what you offer, or what action are you inviting others to take.

People don't act because they have information. The act when they're motivated, know what to do, and are reminded to do it.

The Golden Circle gives you all three.

P.S. The main misunderstanding I see about the Golden Circle is it being used for business strategy. It is *not* a business strategy tool. It's a communication tool. If you watch Simon's original video, you'll see he exclusively talks about how brands communicate. Not how they planned their business strategy.

When I applied to an MA in Anthropology, I had no idea what I was signing up for.

I’m not sure if Rebecca and the team at University of Sussex knew that, but I’m so glad they accepted me 😅

Anthropology gave me the tools to look at the world anew. It helped me see things from different perspectives. It gave me the language to challenge norms.

If I could, I’d have taken this new MA at Sussex: MA in Social & Cultural Anthropology.

It sounds fascinating and timely.

We need more people to observe the world and everything going on in it.

And the University of Sussex is THE BEST environment for progressive thinking about society and culture.

I’m psyched this course is launching and wish I could take.

A place to donate the ideas you’re unlikely to ever use, or perhaps want to but don’t know how.

Or borrow one that’s sparked your imagination.

No pressure and no ownership… just a collective space to store hopeful thinking.

Men struggling with mental health don't need adopting.
They need support and spaces to heal.

Bronwyn is spot on here.

I saw a similar poster on the same day and left feeling baffled by how Men's Minds Matter have completely stripped any agency from the people they say they're helping.

The one I saw, said: "adopt Steve for £9.87 today"
For real 🤯.

The one voice I'd love to hear on this is Chance Marshall.

At the heart of all messaging should be our values.

So why would a non-profit make the very people they exist to support the punchline of their marketing?

Travelling back from Kendal on Sunday, I spotted a poster in the women’s toilets that left me… confused.

I’ve been fortunate to be part of many conversations about the ethics of campaigning and messaging, especially around mental health and community engagement. And I can’t lie – this advert jarred.

Not because the issue isn’t important, but because the narrative didn’t feel supportive or reflective of the people it aims to help.

Any adult, including men, experiencing mental health challenges, burnout or overwhelm does not need to be “adopted.”

They need clear pathways to support, care, and respect.

What most baffled me is that the organisation behind the campaign, Men's Minds Matter tell a far more compelling and coherent story on their website. Their use of data, visuals and calls-to-action is strong, grounded and feels human.

This execution, though? It didn’t draw me in. If anything, it pushed me away.

And it raised a bigger question: How do we, as businesses and leaders, ensure that the narratives we put into the world truly, and consistently, reflect our values?

Because when our messaging drifts, we lose attention. We lose trust. We lose action.

Narratives can be bold. They can be provocative. But they have to stay rooted in the values of the brand and respectful to the communities they serve.

Just back from kendal MFF
 — and still absorbing the conversations, connections, and deep listening that happened over the weekend.

I shared some of my thoughts on decolonising our relationship with nature, and how inclusion in the outdoors must go beyond surface-level representation.

We can’t truly talk about access without talking about ableism. About the systems that have made certain bodies feel like outsiders in spaces they should belong to.

As I said during my talk: We are the only minority group you can join at any time — through illness, accident, or age. You are only temporarily non-disabled.

It’s not always easy to bring these truths into rooms that aren’t used to hearing them — but it matters.

Challenging ableism isn’t about blame. It’s about reimagining the way we move, design, speak, and care — so more people feel welcome, seen, and at home in the wild.
