Decisions take longer than they should. What they're often missing is perspective. I work with founders, entrepreneurs and senior leaders to redesign their business so progress becomes deliberate rather than reactive. My role is not to motivate or advise from the sidelines, but to help you see what’s really happening, decide what actually matters next and act with confidence. Over thirty years across UK real estate, SME growth and complex ventures, I’ve learnt how to turn complexity into focus and judgement into momentum. I’m often brought in when optimisation has stopped working, or when a business needs rebalancing rather than more effort. Often this is due to growth but anyway, over time, things tend to get messy. Ready for 2026? Plans. Projections. Purpose. 
How much will the first curveball test your resolve? What separates that list of good intentions from real business momentum? 

It’s Monday 5 January, for many the first working day of 2026. And after a well-deserved pause many of us have returned with fresh and strong plans, projections and purpose. For Felix and I, an intricately mapped out Q1 and beyond. 

These aren’t resolutions. 
Resolutions don’t last. 
But we do need to anchor ourselves with habits and self-leadership. 
Because inevitably, things will come out of (seemingly) no-where to throw us off. 

We all know that feeling. 
We’ve a perfect plan. 
- A fully itemised evening out. 
- The method to win our meeting with the boss. 
For founders, it’s every quarter meticulously mapped out. 
Then life happens… 
And what unfurls is something unplanned. 

⁉️ 
For me, that is two genuine opportunities — simultaneously — to partner on restaurant turnarounds. 
One came as a suggestion, crystallising a thought I’d had back in November. 
The other came out of nowhere, a shot in the dark. 
A fresh career direction? 

Before you lead your team into the year, you need to lead your own day.
Routines, rituals and self-discipline aren’t optional extras; they’re the scaffolding that holds up execution. 

In short: while strategy sets the compass, opportunity and our journey across the map will always offer, and force, detours.
The question isn’t whether you’ll encounter the unexpected, it’s how anchored you are and whether you can accept adaption and assess risk. 

Momentum demands both structure and agility. 
That means: 
✅ Leading your own day before you lead your team. 
Managing energy with as much care as time. 
✅ Building rhythms that haven’t been derailed by social scroll habits or the tyranny of the urgent. 
✅ Accepting that curve-balls are inevitable. 
Prepare to pivot. 

Plans are essential but they aren’t and should not be sacred.
Resilience lies in what we build into our day. 
When the unexpected arrives, we can lean into it, or not, but not be knocked off course.

Sustainability isn’t about being good. 
It's not a moral exercise.

ESG is so full of boxes to tick, most of the people I speak to running non profits assisting in the space don't even think it's a good thing. Good intentions perhaps but not the way it's run. 
It's been too long since I touched base with Jill Poet of ORB, an enterprise trying to actually help! 
Jill is not that into ESG but she's very vocal that responsible business is just good business! 

The founders who get this right don’t treat ESG as compliance.
✅ They treat it as strategy.
✅ They reduce waste because waste is friction.
✅ They automate efficiency. Because inefficiency costs money.
✅ They’re transparent about impact because trust compounds faster than marketing spend ever can. 

And now... for the uncomfortable truth:
Customers, partners and staff increasingly want to buy from businesses that behave like they’ll still be here in ten years.
❌ Not louder.
❌ Not greener in theory.
✅ But calmer, more intentional, more durable. 

Sustainability in business isn’t softness. 
It's strength expressed quietly. 

You don’t need to start with grand gestures, with sweeping policies.
Start with something small and practical:
• More efficient systems
• Less rework and waste
• Sensible energy decisions
Follow this with a bit of honest storytelling about what you are and aren’t doing yet. People seem to like honesty these days. 

Efficiency compounds.
And so does credibility. 
And this is exactly why sustainability sits as one of the eight disciplines inside BusinessMark. 
Not as a badge. 
Not as box ticking. 
But as a signal of whether a business is being built to endure. 
Are you built to endure? 

The question worth asking yourself isn’t
“Are we sustainable?”
It’s "What are we doing today that makes the business more likely to survive tomorrow?" 
The real advantage lies here.

But few are actually ready to receive it. 

Asking for feedback means very little. 
Anyone can send a survey. 

Acting on it means everything. 
We’ve trained customers to think feedback means scores. 
🌟 Stars. 
💯 Ratings. 
9️⃣ Net Promoters. 

And yes those signals matter. 
✅ They reassure. 
✅ They help others decide. 
In these days of populism, they matter like nothing else. 

But they rarely help a business learn. 

Scores are what companies ask for when they want something to promote.
✅ They tell you how you’re perceived. 
❌ Not why. 
They reward popularity, not honesty. 

The feedback that makes a business better is 
Quieter 
More specific 
Sometimes uncomfortable. 

It doesn’t fit neatly into a box.
It requires listening, judgement, and visible response. 

Customers trust companies not because they ask nicely, but because they adjust openly.
When feedback leads to change, explanation, or even a principled refusal, confidence grows. 

Customer satisfaction isn’t created by politeness or platforms. 
It’s created when people see evidence that their experience shapes what happens next. 

If a customer pointed out something broken in your business this week, would they notice what changed?
That answer matters far more than a score.
