Over the last decade alone, U.S. companies have spent well over $1 trillion on employee training and leadership development. Trillion. At the same time, leaders have shouldered an ever-increasing share of the responsibility for driving performance inside their organizations.

Scroll LinkedIn on any given day and you’ll see no shortage of conversations about leadership. That focus makes sense. Leadership matters. A lot.

And yet, there are persistent and very real gaps in the practical capabilities of today’s workforce — gaps that few institutions are meaningfully closing at scale. Not K–12. Not higher education. And not most companies.

That’s not an absolute statement. Exceptions, always. But the imbalance between dollars spent on leadership development and the actual readiness of employees to execute is hard to ignore.

• 70% of employees say they haven’t mastered the skills they need for their jobs today.

• 60% of employees report they’ve never received formal workplace training at all, with many skills being self-taught. And it's not like the other 40% are raving about having all the training they need.

The data backs up the frustrations leaders are feeling:
• 64% of managers don’t believe employees can keep pace with future skill needs (Gartner)
 • 70% of leaders say business performance is suffering because employees lack critical skills (Springboard)
 • 41% of HR leaders say their workforce lacks the skills needed to meet current business demands (Gartner)

Some of the most common gaps leaders cite: 

• The ability to self-check work for accuracy before submitting it

• Systems thinking — understanding how a change in one document, decision, or process creates ripple effects across teams and stakeholders

• Practical problem-solving — knowing how to research, use AI and digital tools, test options, and evaluate trade-offs

 • Efficiency judgment — identifying the fastest effective way to get something done, not just the most familiar

 • Clear internal communication — writing messages to peers, leaders, and direct reports that are complete, accurate, and easy to act on

 • Proactiveness — understanding what it actually looks like in practice and how to demonstrate it consistently

These aren't nice-to-have skills. They're foundational to performance.

And to state the obvious: Leaders lead better when the teams behind them have the right skills for the world we live in now and the one we're living in tomorrow. 

When those skills are missing, leaders don’t get to lead — they compensate. They review, fix, translate, chase, and re-explain. 

Here's why I'm sharing this. The leadership space is exceptionally crowded today. An opportunity to differentiate and open more doors? Look closely at the hard skills you could add to the mix — the ones that directly improve everyday execution on the work that's on everyone's task list.

In late December, I sat down with Re Perez to film an episode of his new podcast, 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗻𝗲. And we kept coming back to something that doesn’t get talked about honestly enough in brand conversations. 

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂:
• choose a brand name that isn’t descriptive
• outgrow an identity that once worked but now limits you
• invest in a rebrand, a URL, or a long-term bet before there’s proof
• stay steady when the market misunderstands you for a while

We also talked about something founders rarely expect: 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂. 

𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙩 𝙛𝙚𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙤𝙬𝙣𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥. Clients feel invested. 

If you don't believe me, just look at the market uproar when a beloved brand makes a change to their name or logo that their loyal customer base despises. (I bet you just thought of a particular brand right now!)

That’s not something you can manufacture with a good logo and a lot of content. It happens because of an emotion that is created. 

𝗪𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗜, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹. 

Money is being redirected fast. Teams are being reorganized. Experts who can’t clearly connect what they do to where budgets are moving are already feeling it.

One thing I said on the show that I stand by completely: authority doesn’t come from talking about your work.

𝗜𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴:

• The number of leads you can generate
• The number of sales conversations you can have
• The number of deals you can close
• The speed of your follow-up

• The number of clients you can serve without chaos
• The amount of thought leadership you can produce
• The number of stages you can speak on
• The speed at which you can deliver results and renewals
• The amount of revenue you can generate

Most business owners don’t think about operational cadence. 

Even if they do, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁. 

And they rarely 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆.

Meanwhile, the firms that win (and keep winning -- growth, profit, predictability, freedom) aren’t always the most talented.

They’re the ones that can execute faster — 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘭𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘥𝘳𝘢𝘨.

In logistics, delays happen at the handoff: warehouse to truck, truck to port, port to plane.

In boutique firms that happens, too, but business owners don't bring the same rigor to smooth it out: lead to call, call to scope, signed contract to onboarding, onboarding to delivery, delivery to billing, and so on.

Every **handoff** needs a process, a template, and a timeline.

 2. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗽𝘂𝘁, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆
High performance in logistics is about throughput, not adrenaline and exhaustion.

Same in business. If execution requires heroic effort and all nighters, the cadence will collapse. Design workflows that move smoothly when you’re crazy busy, not only when you’re “on.”

 3. 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱
Logistics doesn’t reinvent the process every time a shipment goes out.

𝘽𝙤𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙦𝙪𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢𝙨 𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙧𝙚𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙙𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙮 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚 𝙖 𝙘𝙡𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣𝙨.

Standardize onboarding, reporting, client touch points, and delivery milestones so growth doesn’t create chaos.

This is not about hustle. This is not about burnout.
