Before, companies could simply trade their knowledge for contact information in order to generate leads for sales. Although this approach worked quite well for some time, we believe it's time to adapt and embrace a new way.

Now, people discover business solutions and services through AI, social media, communities, via their network, on chat apps or by listening to podcasts. Just to name a few ways.

While the evidence of this shift is becoming increasingly more clear, companies are struggling to embrace a new approach that capitalises on this new reality.

It’s time for: Buzzword Bonanza. Who will win?

The B2B SaaS/marketing world is full of acronyms, fancy words and whatnot.

Whenever I see someone outside this game hear us talk, their face goes something like this: 🤨🤨🤨

While you shouldn't take growing revenue lightly, I'd argue that having fun and not taking yourself too seriously will actually help you reach your goal.

When you ask a marketing agency about their ideal customer profile, their answer typically goes something like this:

“We work with tomorrow’s leading brands.”

Uh, excuse me?

That’s like… every company that’s not Coca Cola?

No wonder I hear so many stories about agencies that are struggling.

Let me tell you this: sales becomes an incredibly difficult process when you don’t have a super clear picture of who you serve and how exactly you will be successful.

And don’t get me started on delivery.

Your team will literally hate sales because of all the random projects they have to pick up simply to pay the bills.

Want a better recipe?

Take a critical look at your best customers. The 30% of brands you absolutely love working with. Then look for patterns.

Are there maybe 2-3 really great companies that share a similar business model? Or serve similar customers? Or use the same CRM?

This is your starting point.

Once you start getting excited about this customer segment, you need to research its potential.

Use a tool to find similar companies in a region that’s serviceable for your business.

Find a couple hundred?

That’s enough.

Go all in.

Start researching common problems. Find topics they care about. Create content. Identify the influencers in the space. Hire people from those companies. Interview their founders on a podcast.

Do anything you can, as long as it’s relevant to that specific customer segment.

How many times have you heard someone say something like:

“This may sound crazy, but it’s actually really common in our industry.”

Everybody thinks they’re special. That their market is hard to understand as an outsider.

So you become the insider.

And watch the magic happen.

They start seeing you as the best partner to solve their problems.

They start believing you understand their needs better than they do themselves.

Which means they’ll likely start reaching out to you. And you no longer have to chase them.

Effectively turning the tables.

PS - This doesn’t just apply to marketing agencies. It applies to a lot of businesses. But somehow, companies are afraid to narrow down their audience.

Having worked on both sides, I can confidently say there’s a real difference between agency vs. in-house output.

So what causes this?

While it’s never just one thing, I do believe there’s a critical difference.

The agency can get fired after a short period of weak performance. Leading to reduced revenue and an immediate risk of not being able to pay bills.

In-house teams on the other hand, are often safe for a longer period of time. Especially in EU where employees are predominantly well protected from being let go (which I value).

I don’t necessarily believe that pressure is always a good motivator, especially in a creative field. Some things need time.

But lack of pressure sure isn’t a great way to innovate fast, create true ownership and work towards impressive business results.

So what’s the answer?

In my biased opinion, companies need both parties to be successful.

In-house experts who understand the product and market, and understand the brand so they know what’s right and wrong. Together with an agency they can get more work done at a high quality level. The right agency can add industry-specific know-how, strategic guidance and skills that are immediately available.

What’s changed recently is that this collaboration can compound when both parties invest in proper context for AI. And create GPTs/Agents/Workflows that get better with each initiative they run.

In any case it should never be an ‘us vs. them’ situation. It should always be an ‘us together’ setup. 

That’s a lethal combo if you ask me.
