I launched an affiliate site during Google’s worst updates - and watched traffic grow instead of crash.

It was right when everyone said SEO was dead, affiliate marketing was over, and only a fool would start a new site. Still, I did it. And somehow, despite all the chaos, the site keeps growing - fast and consistently.

You’ve probably read countless takes on how affiliate websites are doomed. And honestly, I get why people think that.

A friend of mine quit his high-paying investment job and went all in - spent hundreds of thousands on content, links, and development. Everything looked perfect until one day Google decided that affiliate sites didn’t deserve the visibility they were getting. Overnight, he lost over 90% of his income.

Stories like this are everywhere. Joshua Hardwick wrote that great Ahrefs piece - “Why I Wouldn’t Start Affiliate Marketing in 2025.” Authority Hacker shut down their $2K affiliate course, saying the “traditional playbook doesn’t work anymore” and that it’s impossible to keep up with constant algorithm updates.

Still, during all of that, I kept investing, slowly and quietly, in one of the hardest niches out there: software reviews.

I didn’t expect quick wins. I focused on the basics: understanding what people actually search for, writing content that answers real questions, and sticking to the niche no matter what.

It’s not exciting. It’s not fast. It’s not even one of my main income streams. But it works.

The truth is, the affiliate model has completely changed. The days of easy 20% commissions are gone. My top-performing article featuring Semrush made me exactly $0.03 last month - not exactly early retirement money.

What drives revenue now are listicles, and SaaS companies are obsessed with them. With LLM tools pointing out, “Hey, your competitor is featured here, and you’re not,” brands are launching massive outreach campaigns to get listed anywhere that matters.

If your site has authority, visibility, and a real audience - that’s where the opportunity lies. That’s how the game works now.

There’s no big moral to this story, but here’s what I’ve learned along the way:

- If someone says it’s a bad time to start something, don’t believe them - unless you don’t believe in it.

 - Yes, Google made affiliate SEO harder, but there are still exceptions. Some niches are still growing fast.

- When an old business model stops working, it just means there’s room to build a new one.

You’re letting review sites and competitors tell AI what to think about your brand.

And honestly? That’s on you.

If you want visibility for “you vs competitor” and "best tools" terms, the first place to start isn’t pitching listicles or review websites.

It’s your own website.

Kevin Indig's recent research once again proves that brands can control the narrative - especially when it comes to visibility in AI Mode and other LLMs.

So here’s the thing:

- Write that “best tools” article and unapologetically feature yourself first (of course, if your product truly deserves it).

- Create comparison pages for every main competitor - even if Ahrefs or Semrush shows zero search volume.

- Publish a detailed review or breakdown of your own product.

Because LLMs don’t just pull data from publishers and review sites.

They scrape everything - and if your site doesn’t cover these terms, you’re handing that visibility (and trust) to your competitors.

We do this with every one of my clients - and they see results almost immediately.

If you don’t control the narrative, someone else will.

Every week, someone claims they’ve “cracked” GEO visibility. And every time, I roll my eyes so hard I can practically see the next Google update coming.

At best, those “growth hacks” might work temporarily - until Google or LLMs patch the gap. At worst, you’ll tank your website performance, lose audience trust, and trigger an algorithm slap.

GEO isn’t something you hack. It’s something you build slowly, based on evergreen SEO foundations.

If you expect instant results, you’re playing the wrong game. Prompt stuffing, adding llms.txt for AI retrieval, Reddit spam - none of that has anything to do with sustainable growth.

What does work? Going back to fundamentals first, and only then layering in modern tweaks that help (but never hurt).

Here are a few GEO strategies that actually move the needle for my clients:

1. Cut the fluff. We’ve trimmed all TOFU and most MOFU content, focusing only on high-intent pieces. LLMs and AI Overviews handle general queries better than most traditional search results - so it’s smarter to double down on BOFU.

2. Listicle outreach for brand mentions. This is my favorite GEO tactic using tools like Profound and Scrunch. Scrape listicles where your competitors are featured - and get your brand added too. Brand mentions are gold for LLM visibility.

3. Apply the BLUF model. (Stole this gem from Ahrefs - genius framework.) “Bottom Line Up Front” means starting with the key takeaway before adding context. Humans and LLMs both process content this way - attention is front-loaded.

4. Optimize for chunk retrieval + readability. Add TL;DR or summary sections (AI-generated is fine). They help readers skim fast and make it easier for bots to extract relevant chunks.

5. Structure for answer synthesis. Search engines now blend snippets from multiple pages. Use tools like Frase (after Clearscope) to make sure your content is clear, structured, and easy to pull from.

Before you jump on the next GEO trend making rounds on LinkedIn, ask yourself:

Will this improve the user experience?
Will it still work six months from now?
Could it get me penalized later?

If it passes the test - go ahead and experiment.
If not... skip the hype and build something that lasts.

Most startups don’t fail at SEO because it’s slow.

They fail because they quit right before it starts working.
