Found this 1980 ad about writing clearly. 45 years later, it's still the best writing advice I've ever seen:

1) Know exactly what you want to say before you start

Most people start writing and figure it out as they go. That's why most writing sucks. Thompson says outline first, write second. Revolutionary concept, apparently.

2) Start where your readers are, not where you are

Don't assume people know what you know. Meet them at their level of understanding, then bring them along. Most "experts" write for other experts and wonder why nobody gets it.

3) Use familiar word combinations

Thompson's example: 

A scientist wrote "The biota exhibited a one hundred percent mortality response." Translation: "All the fish died."

Stop trying to sound smart. Start trying to be clear.

4) Arrange your points logically

Put the most important stuff first. Then the next most important. Then the least important. Seems obvious, but most people do it backwards.

5) Use "first-degree" words

Thompson says some words bring immediate images to mind. Others need to be "translated" through first-degree words before you see them.

"Precipitation" => "Rain"
"Utilize" => "Use"
"Facilitate" => "Help"

6) Cut the jargon

Thompson warns against words and phrases "known only to people with specific knowledge or interests." If your mom wouldn't understand it, rewrite it.

7) Think like your reader, not like yourself

Thompson asks: "Do they detract from clarity?" Most writers ask: "Do I sound professional?" Wrong question.

I once met a man who could sell sand to a desert.

He didn’t dress the part. No slick haircut and stuff. Just calm clarity and a kind of quiet weight to the way he talked. 

We met for coffee, and after a few minutes I asked what I thought was a simple question.

“What’s your secret?”

He smiled and shrugged like it wasn’t a big deal. 

“Selling isn’t about what you’re offering. It’s about the gap.”

I must have looked confused, because he kept going.

“Everyone’s in their own version of purgatory. Not quite hell. Not quite heaven. My job is to show them the space between where they are and where they could be.”

He paused, then leaned forward.

“I paint two pictures. One of now. One of what’s possible. The bigger the gap between them, the easier it is to cross.”

“So you sell the future?”

“No,” he said. “I sell the separation.”

You see...

Most people, when they try to sell something (a product, a company, a vision) start by talking about features. Or benefits. Or outcomes. But what they miss is that no one moves until they feel the distance between where they are and where they want to be. 

And most people aren’t aware they’re stuck until someone helps them see it.

That’s what great sellers do. 

They create perspective. 

Not by talking, but by asking the right questions.

“What’s stopping you from solving this?”
“How long have you been stuck here?”
“What happens if nothing changes?”

The moment someone sees the gap, they start to lean forward.

The best salespeople don’t push. They illuminate. 

They don’t tell you what’s possible. They show you what’s missing... and let you walk toward it.

You can do this with stories. With images. With language that creates contrast. 

You don’t need hype. Not at all.

You don’t need to invent urgency, either. 

It’s already there...just hidden under habit.

When you get it right, the sale doesn’t feel like persuasion.

It feels like relief.

So if you're trying to get someone to move, don’t start with what you’re offering. Start with where they are. Then show them what’s just out of reach...and make it feel close enough to want.

That’s the real secret:

You’re not selling the product.

You’re selling the path between two pictures.

And then you show them you’re the bridge.

After 3+ years of writing LinkedIn content that actually moves needles, I've boiled my philosophy down to 8 principles:

#1 You must have something worth talking about.

The best content comes from people who've done something specific that most people haven't. If you haven't lived it, researched it deeply, or failed at it spectacularly, you probably shouldn't be teaching it.

#2 There's only two ways to create damn good content: 

a) Personal experience: You tried something, it worked/failed, now you share the lesson.

b) Information arbitrage: You found insights in one industry/medium and translated them to another.

Everything else is just commentary on commentary.

#3 Your audience size doesn't matter. 

I know creators with 100K followers who can't sell a $50 product. And creators with 2K followers who do $500K years. The difference? Audience intent. 1000 people who found you because they have the exact problem you solve beats 100K people who followed you for entertainment.

#4 Your best content comes from your biggest mistakes.

Everyone wants to learn from your disasters. The campaign that lost $50K. The hire that almost killed your company. The strategy that backfired spectacularly. Success stories sound like humble bragging. Failure stories sound like teaching.

#5 Most content dies because it doesn't transport people.

Great content makes people feel like they're in the room when the thing happened. Use sensory details. Share the exact words people said. Describe how you felt in your stomach. Abstract lessons are forgettable. Vivid scenes are unforgettable.

#6 You need an enemy more than you need an audience.

The best brands aren't just for something - they're against something.
Apple vs. boring computers. Tesla vs. gas guzzlers. Your content should have a clear villain: outdated thinking, bad advice, lazy competitors.

People don't rally around neutral positions. They rally around battles.

#7 Your personality is your distribution strategy.

Algorithms are designed to suppress branded content. But they can't suppress personality. Develop opinions. Share quirks. Be memorable as a human, not just as a source of information.

#8 Stop apologizing for having opinions.

If you believe something works, say it works. 

If you think something is stupid, call it stupid.

Conviction creates conviction in your audience.

It's that you don't have anything unique to say yet.

Get experiences. 

Build something in real life.

Develop strong opinions. 

Then worry about the writing.
