I caught myself rushing through everything in 2025. 

Why is my makeup brush pounding my face at top speed at 7 AM? Why am I chewing my last bite of lunch while carrying the plate back to the kitchen?

Even worse - the rushing at work.

We slip into asking colleagues questions that could be answered in 5 minutes if we slowed down and used our brains before Slacking them.

I got curious about this.

Is it truly impactful or just dumb to rush around?

Turns out, it only saves you 4-5% of your time. Sometimes less.

That amounts to:

19.2 minutes in an 8 hour work day.

2.4 minutes in your 1 hour morning routine.

1 minute 12 seconds on your 30 minute commute.

Here’s the dumb part:

Rushing spikes your cortisol…

…leading to brain fog and lack of focus…

…which harms your creativity and problem-solving…

All the time you”saved” is now far less productive.

Thinking the mere minutes I saved was valuable is *insane* when I realized I’d sacrificed 50% of my capacity to think clearly.

I reject more clients than I take on.

And I think this actually improves my business.

Not every client makes sense for your business. And your services don’t make sense for every business either.

The ability to be 100% honest with clients pays me dividends.

They come back when they DO need my services because they know I’ll never sell them on something they don’t need.

If they never end up needing my services, they often refer their friends/other businesses to me because the know I’m trustworthy.

Sometimes freelancers think about every client as a deal they’re supposed to close.

That can lead to selling the client on a service you’re not even confident is right for their business.

I am so over seeing people work tirelessly at something, achieve it, and then act shocked.

Somewhere along the way, we learned that that’s the “humble” thing to do…that it’s more admirable to pretend you have no idea how you got there.

I’ve watched friends hit $100k in income, open agencies, grow their platforms 10x, and having seen their hard work behind the scenes, their accomplishments are very much believable.

There isn’t an ounce of shock within me.

I want to see more people talking openly and confidently about what they’ve accomplished.

Without a disclaimer, without minimizing it to seem more likable and humble.

Absolutely be grateful. But you worked hard, you earned it, own it.

The biggest thing holding freelancers back isn't lack of knowledge.

It's a perpetual learning trap.

I see it all the time (and I’ve done it myself).

You spend 6+ months consuming content, taking courses, watching tutorials, thinking you’re “getting ready.”

Then 6 months later, you look back and realize you’re only marginally more prepared than you were 6 months prior.

You’ve somehow done a lot and nothing at all at the same time.

When I think back on how freelancing became my full-time income in just a few months, I think it’s because I executed before I thought too hard about it.

I applied for gigs, talked to whoever I could, networked without overthinking who I connected with.

Take this mindset if you want to grow in 2026.

6 months from now, you can either have a list of courses you’ve completed and random tasks you’ve done, or a portfolio of work and a solid client base.

You can’t build from an empty pocket :-)

Of course, there’s nuance to this.

There ARE some “small businesses” that can afford $3-5k/month in marketing spend IF there’s a clear ROI…

(especially if their clients have a high lifetime value, there’s a compelling argument for a higher marketing spend)

But reality is, you might have a hard time convincing companies with smaller budgets that it’s worth expanding it to work with you.

This isn’t to say it CAN’T happen at all.

And this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t work with businesses who have a smaller budget if that’s your passion.

But it’s important to have realistic expectations about your earning potential as a freelancer if you plan to work with a certain clientele.

“I get a lot done because I multi-task.”

No, you go in circles on 10 things and make minimal progress on them all.

I used to pride myself on multitasking.

I really wore it like a badge of honor.

I’d be waiting for a video to upload and use those 60 seconds to type a few sentences on a script. Like ???

It made me feel busy, but busy ≠ productive.

When I’d look back on the day, nothing seemed to move forward in a meaningful way.

I was touching everything and finishing nothing.

In 2026, I’m committed to more focus work blocks. (I did this in 2024 and made so much progress but fell off.)

One thing at a time, no tab-switching, no desperately filling every little gap.

You don’t get more done by doing more at once. You get more done by actually finishing what you start.
