I reached a big milestone today, I got my drivers license back. When you have seizures out of the blue you lose your license as you pose a risk on the road. 

It’s been hours on the phone, lots of letter writing and doctor’s appointments post-brain surgery to get it back. And for a lifelong car guy it’s been a test of where I place my freedom. 

Meditating a few weeks ago I had a thought, “You’re at the next stage now, it’s safe to go back into the world.” And now we are.

AI allows you to align outcomes with incentives and how people are compensated. There is nothing to say that an engineer, salesperson, ops person, or marketing person can't have their pay tied to how well the company is providing outcomes. 

That doesn't mean they get $10K more as a raise. It means they could be making $100K’s more in months because their work is directly affecting how well the company is doing. Great job, Arman.

I pay engineers like salespeople. And yes, people roll their eyes every time I say it.

But at Tenex, this model is working.

AI has fundamentally rewritten the leverage equation for engineers. Yet most companies still compensate them using a pre-AI playbook.

Here’s the core idea:
- Clients pay us for story points delivered
- Engineers get paid for story points completed
- Output > hours
- Impact > tenure
- Incentives tied directly to value created

I shared this backstage with a room full of some of the world’s top CTOs. The looks I got ranged from curiosity to outright disbelief.

But the results speak for themselves. We’ve hired world-class engineers—ex-founders, ML researchers, even NASA rocket scientists—and we’re shipping high-quality, maintainable code at a pace most teams only fantasize about.

Because here’s the uncomfortable truth:

AI has widened the gap between engineers who fully leverage the tooling… and those still typing code like cavemen.

Incentives shape behavior.

But most compensation plans don’t reward engineers for adopting AI, experimenting, increasing throughput, or pushing the boundary of what’s possible.

They reward… staying employed.

AI gives people superpowers.

But only if they’re incentivized to use the tools.

The bottleneck isn’t capability anymore—it’s compensation philosophy.

I’m not saying everyone should adopt our model.

I’m saying the way we pay engineers today is holding them back.

So here’s billion dollar question:

If AI 10x’s the best engineers and exposes the gaps in everyone else—why are we still paying like it’s 2015?

AI isn’t “we all lose our jobs.” To me it’s we get to do work that’s more meaningful with a much higher quality of Life. 

Today I vetted 3 vendors, had a qualifying call and caught up with inestimable Darryl Marc Singer. 

All the while Wispr Flow handling my notes and stray thoughts, Fireflies.ai,  Gumloop agents handling meeting to do’s and follow-ups and all securely stored in Amazon Web Services (AWS) so You.com can allow me to search who said what, when instantly so as I deepen relationships it’s easy for all of us to remember how we’re aligned and moving forward together. 

Most importantly, I could just be present with who I was talking to knowing it’s all organized and take in the pitter patter of rain on a beautiful forest trail while trying to keep warm with an americano. 

That’s the future of work and I’m here for it.
