I called a spammer
He sent me a LinkedIn DM claiming to have spoken to various members of my team.

No idea who these team members are, but I would like to meet them 😄 Everybody Works In Sales Ltd is me and my VA of 7 years Nicola Case. We have never heard of this spammer, who called himself Ben.

So I called up Ben early December and he was unavailable. I left him a message thanking him for his email and asked for a call back.

Heard nothing.

I called back a week later, asking he return my message, and even gave the time and date he sent the email. Nothing.

I then emailed this morning asking why he claimed to have spoken to my team members. 

We all make mistakes. Here's what happens when you make one.

1. Apologise QUICKLY.

2. Apologise SINCERELY.

3. DON'T do it again.

Most people are decent and will accept that.

Lying is foolish because people find out and don't want to work with you. That affects your revenue, profits and reputation.

Upselling and Cross-Selling To Your Clients
Yesterday I went to buy new trainers.

There were 3 people working in the shop. 

2 people were chatting about their Saturday night louder than they should have, with their backs to customers. They failed to acknowledge me when I walked in.

The 3rd worker, Elaine, asked me, “Hi, what help do you need?, not the usual cliched “Can I help you with anything?” One is an open question, the other is a closed one.

Always use an open question at the beginning.

I had plantar fasciitis in my feet 10 years ago. After the NHS repeatedly failed to get the diagnoses right, I went private.

After a brutal course of cortisol injections, they recommended trainers like ASICS, HOKA or Brooks with padding to protect my feet.

Elaine recommended trainers that would help and support me. My budget was £90 and the trainers that were more comfortable at £130 – upsell done.

She noticed my work socks and mentioned that sports socks are better suited, so I purchased several pairs of socks – cross-sell done.

Having worked 31 years in sales, I’m a tough person to sell to, yet I purchased with ease.

My wife Rachel ( as a newly wed, I still get excited calling her my wife) was with me. She was impressed with Elaine and purchased pink trainers for herself.

This is a great example of how selling should be done.

There was:
 
✅  no awkward body language
✅  no nerves
✅  no speaking faster
✅  no hard sell
✅  no rush for the deal
✅  no desperation
✅  it was all about serving the customer

Most people don’t think enough about upselling or cross-selling to clients - and they're not aware of their tone or body language when doing so.

If Michael Jordan needed support, so you do.
…Michael Jordan was a basketball player for Chicago Bulls. He was a good player, but was still getting pushed around by certain teams like Detroit Pistons.

Enter Tim Grover. He wrote to everyone in the Chicago Bulls team asking to be their coach and help them succeed. They ignored him.

He didn’t initially write to Michael Jordan since he was the best player in the team and thought Michael Jordan would ignore him.

Finally, he wrote to Michael Jordan who wanted to improve his career and was smart enough to say yes.

No outsider has ever come into a basketball team like this before and naturally people were concerned.

Many sales leaders and business owners are concerned about hiring outside coaches, often thinking they know it all themselves.

If you try and do everything yourself, you will fail.

Everyone needs help.

Tim Grover didn’t train Jordan on getting better at basketball, he trained him on mindset, getting the basics right and got him doing arm weights to intimidate the competition. Tim didn’t train him the way other people did.

Jordan is now considered the greatest basketball player and of one of the most successful athletes of all time.

How is this relevant to you?

✅ Never give up at the first attempt like most people.

✅ Never be afraid of going big.

I received this cold email from something I posted on LinkedIn.

Here’s what I like about the email
It’s short and to the point

Here’s what’s wrong with it 
❌ You messaged me on the wrong platform
❌ You have no website or contact details, so I waste time searching to see if you’re real or AI
❌ You have your timelines wrong
❌ You’re making assumptions

Here’s how to improve it
➡️ Nobody needs another email

➡️ ➡️ LinkedIn is the easiest platform to sell on (apart from face to face).

➡️ ➡️ ➡️ Like and comment on their posts first so they know who you are.

➡️ ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ When you message in the DMs, voice notes and videos get a higher rate of return because most people don’t make that effort.

➡️ ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ ➡️ It’s not the most qualified who get the business. It’s often those who stand out and provide value

It was great to spend time with

DSMN8 - The Employee Advocacy Platform asked me for my thoughts on their latest report: The World's Biggest Employee Advocacy Study.  

It’s a very comprehensive piece of work with some illuminating findings; two of which stand out for me. 

Personal content gets 9% more engagement than company page curated posts.

That’s 9% more eyes on your company page content by empowering your employees to post on LinkedIn. 

=>> Companies should build more “people-led” content into the mix.

Not every post, but even 1/3 with a personal angle will lift engagement across ALL company content.

=>> Biggest surprise: the highest engagement rates come from employees with 5,000 to 10,000 connections.

That’s such a good takeaway for leaders and teams who think they need “influencer numbers” before it’s worth showing up.

This is a great incentive for my clients to build their following, and hopefully it will inspire you to do the same!

Here’s some LinkedIn maths for you.
You’ve probably heard the stat that companies can increase their LinkedIn reach by 561% when employees share content authentically.

But let's take it back a step, what does that actually mean in real life?

A 561% increase means you’re not adding a tiny bit on top. You’re multiplying the outcome.

If your company page post reaches 1,000 people…

=>> Up to 561% more reach could equate to 6,610 people seeing the same message.

1,000 + (561% of 1,000) = 1,000 + 5,610 = 6,610

The interesting part is not the number.

It’s why it happens.

When a real person shares something with even a line of context, it lands differently. It feels like insight, not an announcement.

Credibility, not “content”.

That’s trust at work, and in 2026 trust is the shortcut people use to decide who to pay attention to.

I hear this a lot - and it was reinforced in a meeting I had yesterday. 
Things like: 

'LinkedIn is full of rubbish'
'It's becoming too self-promotional'
'LinkedIn is too 'business-y'

It doesn't have to be like this; LinkedIn can be a great place to hang out, meet interesting and relevant people and, of course, begin business transactions.

It's all about how you behave on the platform. 

In the words of Richard van der Blom on his post TODAY in fact: 

"Posts from accounts you regularly engage with get 3.2x more visibility than random viral content. A smaller, highly relevant niche network now outperforms a large but disengaged one. For reach AND lead quality."

What you put in is what you get out. 

So create a strategy around your LinkedIn activity. Be intentional, proactive and organised and you can actually begin to not only ENJOY being here, but you can also start to get business!
