This wasn’t the post I planned

I’ve just returned from a business trip to London, and something miraculous happened. I’ll share that story next week because this is more time-critical.

Last night, I attended the Foodstock charity ball—a night dedicated to changing lives. 

Foodstock Charity alleviates the effects and financial hardship for individuals and families residing in communities. It is reaching hundreds of people living in crisis with mutual aid food parcels.

The stories I heard moved me deeply. Volunteers, the lifeblood of this mission, poured their hearts into making real change.  Paul Doherty and Ciaran Toman moved an entire room to get behind their cause.

Every person there, every smile, every act of kindness, rippled out into the community. This is what real impact looks like.

Giving to charity doesn’t just help others—it transforms you. It lifts your soul, expands your perspective, and reminds you of what truly matters.

Yes, donating is amazing, but when you get involved and step into a room like this, you feel part of something bigger than yourself.

You feel the energy, the unity, and the purpose.

There were no egos, just a community asking, “How can we help?” There was something almost spiritual about being surrounded by so much genuine goodness.

If you need a reminder that hope is real, look to Foodstock. In a world often driven by negativity and cynicism, they are changing the world one act of kindness at a time.

London trip and an unexpected surprise
Online calls save time, but when you’re in the same room:

✅ You get real connection.
✅ You listen better.
✅ These moments are where genuine relationships are built.

It’s not just about the networking. Trips like this also remind me about the importance of investing in yourself.

Personal development isn’t just reading books or listening to podcasts (although I do both). It’s about challenging yourself, and learning from people who have skills you don't have. That’s where growth happens.

Up at 3m for a flight and bumped into Louise Brogan at Belfast City Airport. Always important to catch up with LinkedIn connections (and a fellow Springsteen fan) who is doing great work.

First stop Holly Christie my awesome website designer. Website enquiries are a key part of my business and Holly knows how to build a website that connects with my audiene and generated leads. My website has been upgraded and we celebrated with lunch and a walk around Richmond www.nirajkapur.com

Met Lucy Meadows I’ve known her father  Sid Meadows, CPC  for years. On Clubhouse then his awesome podcast, then when I coached Sid’s colleagues in sales training and then LinkedIn training. Talking to Gen Z over coffee and having lots of laughter and conversation was a joy.

Dinner at Rosa’s Thai with Shivan Pillay I was on his sales podcast Why Did It Fail. It was cool to hang out with fellow coach and yes, all we talked about was sales.

Kings Cross Renaissance, inspired by Hogwarts, is also a stunning venue to have coffee. Thank you Melanie Goodman for a lovely morning of discussions on LinkedIn, marriage and holidays.

One of my favourite sales books is Problem Prospecting, so I bought the follow-up, Deconstructing Discovery. Had a fan boy moment when Mark Ackers and Richard Smith kindly signed it with me. They were running training for their company MySalesCoach I recently joined My Sales Coach to work with more new clients:

1. Because I want to create more impact.

2. They’re doing important work in sales.

3. You always go further together as a team.

I’m not going to tag all 50 people I spent time with. I will say a special thanks to John Richardson Gemma Dodd Neil Bhuiyan Marc Baladi Fred Copestake and Alan Duncan who I brainstormed with and spoke to most of the time.

The unexpected surprise PETER CLARKE 🇨🇦 flew over from Canada with his fabulous wife Renuka Mohan As he was arriving in London, I was flying back home. How could we meet? 

Destiny took place and he arrived at Conrad St James, Westminster, where I was upskilling with My Sales Coach.

We talked about the most important thing in the world; rock music 😃 🎵 🎸  and I shared sightseeing tips that tourists don't know about London

Travelling on business is exhausting and getting more expensive. It’s still worth it.

I trust this email finds you well
A phrase is used by untrained/badly trained salespeople.
Now every MD, financial advisor and health coach that messages me uses this tactic, which has no meaning or value.

I’m an active buyer and invest heavily in my business – so I have no problem with people selling. I encourage people to sell. 

Selling helps your business survive, grow and you pick up many new skills along the way.

The purpose of a cold email or LinkedIn DM is NOT to sell.

1.    It’s to get their attention.

No Calendly link
No “Are you free 15 minutes Tuesday or Thursday?”
And stop copy and pasting. The world of business has changed. Clinging onto old habits hurts you and your reputation.

✅ When you send a personalised email that gives value upfront, you’re more likely to get someone’s attention.

2.    The magic is in the follow-up.

People rarely do business on the first point of contact.
Sometimes you have to follow-up on different platforms
Don’t repeatedly send emails
And please, do not say “bumping this to the top of your inbox.”

✅ ✅ Research someone first to show you’ve made some effort. A little effort goes a long way

3. Be Human

In today’s technology and AI-driven world, being human helps you stay a step ahead.

Put yourself in the customers shoes. What do they want? NOT what do you want to sell? What do THEY want?

I win a lot of business that my competitors don’t get. I don’t work longer hours and I'm not more intelligent.... I pick up the phone instead of sending another email. I overdeliver massively instead of doing the minimum required. I get on a bus, train or plane to see people instead of Zoom.

✅✅✅ Being different and being human matters.

There’s so much noise everywhere
It’s harder than ever to stand out.
A lot of people I want to do business with are not just overwhelmed, they’re exhausted.

Many of my competitors have secretly taken part-time jobs to make ends meet.
A few have quit completely to work for others.

No judgement here. You do what you have to do to take care of your family.

One thing that ensures I ride through the storm and keep generating business is standing out.

So this week, I’ve avoided technology. I met people face to face, locally and in London. Once I’ve met them all, I will happily share it. In the meatime:

It helps me prep. Helps me research
Now and again, it can help with creativity.

So far, it’s awful at selling.

You need a human touch for that.

This person claimed I was at a company I left in 2017! And I wasn’t a coach there, I was sales and marketing manager.

Facts all wrong due to bad AI / untrustworthy software.

I understand you’re busy and you want quick fixes.

I know you might be under pressure at work from a demanding boss who cares more about his bonuses than your well-being.

During my corporate career, I’ve been there many times. When selling your product or service, please bear this in mind.

1. Sales is a marathon, not a sprint.

2. People buy from people (unless they work for a billion-dollar corporation).

3. Business acumen is more important than "10 ways to close a deal."

4. I am a fan of AI, however, it will only take you so far.

5. Soft skills like listening and emotional intelligence are more important than high pressure and

BONUS: Stop complaining about work-life balance if you want more success than others.

Stand out in a competitive market
It helps in business.
It definitely helps on LinkedIn.
