The most interesting thing about Swiss Mining Institute wasn’t the venue, the food, the presentations, but it was the collective confidence.

Umar Rafique and I spent last week at the Swiss Mining Institute in Zurich, and the energy across the event was refreshing. Coming from tech, where AI and tokenization create this constant pull forward, metals and minerals now feel like they’re developing that same underlying conviction.

One thing that struck me early was how many companies had secured funding. And there was sense that the industry finally has room to breathe.

You could feel that in the conversations. People spoke about their projects with real pride, but there was also an openess to do more. A genuine appetite to modernise, tell better stories, and use tech more deliberately. 

For a sector often seen as traditional, it felt like the first time in a while where leaders had the capacity (and the intention) to focus on more than just the ground itself.

A big thank you to everyone we met and a huge shout out to Sarah Bouchisse and her team for organising such a seamless and engaging event.

Zurich was stunning as always, and The Dolder Grand hotel… timeless.

Myself, Umar Rafique, and Adrian Kirby attended Tokenize: LDN. Great conversations, sharp panels, and a clear signal that RWA tokenisation is moving from theory to reality.

Before the key takeaways, a quick grounding for anyone new to the space:

RWA tokenisation turns traditional financial products (funds, credit, gold, real estate) into digital tokens on modern, regulated rails. The aim: move ownership and value with far less friction - instant settlement, 24/7 availability, transparent and auditable, but anchored in real-world value rather than speculation.

Now, the 7 takeaways:

🔹 1. Regulation, regulation… and more regulation.
It’s ever-present. The responsibility is on us to bring strong ideas, business cases, and clear economic rationale to regulators, not wait for permission.

🔹 2. FinTechs vs enterprises.
FinTechs move quickly, test, and break new ground. Banks move carefully, balancing innovation with governance. The real opportunity sits in hybrid models: FinTechs push the experimentation, while banks and regulators scale what proves to work.

🔹 3. 'Tokenise everything!' Just kidding...
Real products matter, with real utility and sensible economics. Familiar entry points like gold, real estate, or established financial products will drive early adoption on both the institutional and retail side.

🔹 4. Short-term ROI is unlikely.
Tokenisation requires upfront investment across systems, processes, and regulatory alignment. This is a long-horizon shift, not a quick win, early adopters will naturally carry more of the initial load.

🔹 5. Investor experience matters.
Tokenisation changes how value moves, and the investor experience must evolve with it. If the journey isn’t simple, trusted, and frictionless, adoption will stall. Better experience = better awareness, conversion, and retention.

🔹 6. Early days, but no longer ground floor.
Only 3 out of 100 people owned a tokenised product. Early, yes. But with stablecoins, Bitcoin ETFs, and quiet institutional buildouts accelerating, momentum is clearly forming.

🔹 7. Transparency vs privacy needs balance.
Users won’t accept full transparency. The future likely looks like provable transactions without exposing unnecessary details. 


In summary:
Regulation sits in the background of every decision. Tokenisation must be driven by real use cases, strong products, and better investor experiences, not hype. The next phase is about utility, infrastructure, and trust.

Innovation still needs to lead. Our role is to bring smart ideas, solid economics, and thoughtful experience design, then bring regulators, institutions, and customers along for the journey.
