More than 10 years ago, I co-organized a Startup Weekend with Saadia and Charlene and it taught me one of the most fundamental lessons in building a business.

At Microsoft’s HQ, 80 strangers came together under one roof. 
In just 54 hours, they formed teams, built MVPs, and pitched them.

People from every background showed up some chasing ideas, others offering their time. Even executives like Janet, Christian, Ross, Milad, Foteini and Sahand gave up their weekends to help founders get unstuck.

That’s when I learned what real community looks like.

Today, you’ll hear the word “community” used like a slogan but don’t be fooled.

Community isn’t a tactic that's formulated in the boardroom, it’s something you earn.

It only works when people who care deeply about solving a problem come together to serve.

You can pour money, tools, and strategy into it, but without that foundation, it wont stick. If you’re lucky, you’ll meet people like Nikki and Noor, who will give without ever keeping score.

This weekend shaped how I build today.

I’m genuinely excited about the caliber of attendees and speakers coming out to this event.

Many firms stay on desktop because their clients do. It feels practical—until you realize what’s at stake. The world has moved to the cloud, and every major platform, integration, and efficiency gain is being built there.

If your practice stays tied to desktop, you’re not just maintaining the past—you’re limiting your firm’s future. Growth, valuation, and succession all depend on how adaptable your systems are. The next generation won’t inherit static infrastructure; they’ll inherit agility.

Your clients and team won’t remain unchanged, and neither will expectations. Cloud isn’t about convenience anymore—it’s about continuity. The choice to move defines not just how you work today, but how your firm survives tomorrow.

We tell our staff: "𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝘆."

But in many firms, what we actually mean is: "Don't trust, re-do everything."

I see Partners reviewing simple files for 3 hours because they may not trust the process their team followed or atleast not consistently. That’s not quality control. 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄.

True verification is looking at exceptions, not ticking and tying every single line item yourself.

If you can't trust the output without re-doing the input, your workflow may be broken.

For years, technology in accounting was sold as a way to “save time.” But saving time means nothing if it’s not reinvested strategically. The real advantage comes from freeing capacity—redirecting hours from checklists to client strategy, from repetition to relationship.

Firms leading the next decade aren’t just faster; they’re fundamentally different. They’re using automation and AI to elevate their people, expand advisory offerings, and strengthen client impact. Nearly 93% of firms now provide advisory services—and those with mature practices are growing almost twice as fast.

Every firm is chasing talent. Few are asking the harder question—why would top people choose you?

We’ve watched firms transform their ability to attract and retain talent simply by modernizing how they work. The connection is direct: the firms that embrace technology, flexibility, and clarity win the best people. The ones that don’t are left competing on salary alone.

Moving to the cloud told employees the firm invests in their time, not just their output. It built trust and retention naturally.

𝟯. 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Remote collaboration tools and secure cloud access allowed firms to retain skilled staff who refused to return to rigid schedules.

𝟰. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗼𝘀.
Firms that standardized their templates and workflows reduced burnout—and improved onboarding for new hires.

These changes didn’t just make firms more efficient; they made them places people wanted to stay. Technology became a talent strategy, not an IT project.

The next generation of accountants isn’t choosing firms based on prestige—they’re choosing environments built for growth, learning, and impact.
If your systems still slow your best people down, the problem isn’t talent. It’s time.

- Stop manual trial balance entry. (If it doesn't sync, don't touch it). 
- Stop "Body in Seat" billing. (Value the output, not the struggle). 
- Stop accepting clients who refuse to use bank feeds. (You are not a data entry service). 
- Stop using email for client document collection. (It's a security nightmare and a time vampire)

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼.

What to do next — a phased path that builds on itself:
 1. 𝗔𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀. Map tools, data, and dependencies. Know what’s core, redundant, or replaceable.
 2. 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲. Move documents, backups, and client files to a secure cloud platform.
 3. 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗱-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲. This becomes your operational foundation.
 4. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸. Once data and processes are connected, use AI and automation to scale.
 5. 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲. Shift focus from manual prep to advisory, analysis, and client relationships.

Why now:
 • Cloud is no longer optional — it’s the infrastructure of modern accounting.

 • Every delay compounds lost opportunity and lowers future valuation.

The firms that act today won’t just work more efficiently — they’ll own the next decade of accounting. The rest will eventually move too, but on someone else’s timeline.
