Well, following on from my previous post about PhD options, I'm going for it. 

I've found a supervisor, written my research proposal, and I've just pressed submit on my application for a part-time PhD. 

All things going well, I'll be actively combining applied positive psychology and financial planning.

Now I just wait and keep my fingers crossed...

This last couple of weeks have been tough. I've found myself struggling with a few things and I've been a bit down in the dumps. 

Then I logged on to my computer this morning to a sea of positivity from my R06 students. I've had some messages this morning that have lifted my spirits more than I can say. 

I passed my equivalent of R06 in 1997 and nearly 30 years on I still get a huge buzz from seeing people passing through that gate into the next stage of their careers. 

If you got your pass this morning and you're now diploma qualified, a massive congratulations! One word of advice from an old timer? Take a moment to enjoy it. You have worked hard and made sacrifices along the way... you deserve to pause and acknowledge your achievement. 

If it didn't go your way this time, it's a bend in the road not a destination. Don't despair. Still take a moment to praise yourself for the work you did and then regroup and go again. If you're feeling down about it, drop me a DM. I promise it's not the end of the journey. Over the years I've lost count of how many people told me they couldn't do it.... and how many people subsequently proved they could after all.

Today, I'll be mostly talking about Long Term Care. 

And that made me realise that I spoke a lot in the last couple of years about the struggles we've had sorting out my mum's care, but I've not given an update for a while and a couple of people have kindly asked after her. 

Mum is now safely settled in a wonderful care home and doing well despite the advancing pace of her dementia. At this point she still knows who I am and I'm taking that as a blessing. I know that the incredible staff in her home are giving her the best support and I feel very lucky....

But at the same time I'm mindful that it's not really luck. It's grit, tenacity, and a good knowledge of the rules and regulations around care. If I didn't know my stuff, I can 100% say we wouldn't have got to this outcome. Even with detailed knowledge it was an 18 month grind on her behalf.

Of all the many financial exams I've taken, long term care stands out as the most useful. My knowledge in this area has now helped three very dear members of my family get better outcomes than would otherwise have been the case. 

Shouldn't be that way but it very much is in the care system right now.

20-odd years ago I was part of the Chartered Insurance Institute 'future leaders' programme. 

Today I'm on a train, heading to London to speak about the positive psychology of ageing well, and what it means to the financial planning journey...

My own age has jumped a few decades in the blink of an eye and this has become a subject of practical importance to me as well as theoretical relevance. 

I'm going to argue that the biggest missing piece in most retirement journeys is purpose... Retirement is a three part process: 

1. Financial change
2. Psychological adjustment
3. Identity transformation

And it's that last one we're not very good at ... Finding the thing that gives life meaning when work ends.

Unfortunately I found mine... I'm bloody brilliant at a Richard Osman's house of games... But only famous people get to go on it... And I ain't famous. 

I'll just have to keep living for the "very well done if you said that at home...." I did Richard, I did... Some time before the contestant 🤷‍♂️🙋‍♂️🤦‍♂️😭

There's an old adage that there's always one idiot in the room, and if you're not sure who it is, it's probably you...

This morning I didn't have to worry on that front. Because it was clearly the man doing butterfly down the middle of the lane in the 20m pool at our gym (a lane with four people in it, BTW).

Following on from my accidental transposition of the D and the R in Hadron at the end of last year, today's embarrassing misstep is brought to you courtesy of the word 'link'. 

When checking textbooks, I make sure all weblinks are still current and add a note to the editor that 'link is good' when it works .

Today, without noticing, I pressed the button next door to the 'L' and narrowly avoided sending my editor a note that 'kink is good' 

It's a dangerous world out there, vigilance pays! 🤷‍♂️ 🤣

I've been a Whoop user for a couple of years now. Find it really useful as a tool.. When to push, when not to. I've used it to get myself triathlon ready and it's not let me down.

This is new, though. I think I might have let my hair down a wee bit too much last night after a very busy and stressful week 🤣🤣

Why don't people save for retirement? 

There are many reasons. For some people it's a matter of lack of resources, but for others the funds are there, but action doesn't arise. So why?  

When we feel financially stressed, our mental bandwidth narrows. We can only focus on the things immediately in front of us, not long-term planning. 

This leads in to some fascinating work by Professor Fuschia Sirois of Durham University. She's shown that procrastination is not about time-management, it is about mood repair. 

People put off tasks that trigger anxiety, shame, fear of failure, or overwhelm - and financial tasks can trigger all four of them. 

That's a dangerous combination - narrow bandwidth, and the four triggers of procrastination. 

Clients under stress aren't avoiding planning, they're protecting themselves in the moment. To encourage action, advisers need to shift the narrative - you need to ask 'what emotional load is this client carrying, and how can we shift it?' 

If you've got clients who procrastinate, don't push the issue. Don't give them more data, instead, recognise the stress as normal, break the action into smaller steps, and only ask for one at a time. Importantly, when you get those micro steps, celebrate the small wins.

Over time the emotional pain of action dissipates and the wider bandwidth allows for more connection to the future version of themselves.
