Everyone wants to be a ‘marketplace for X’ but very few want to do the dirty work of being the best X company that happens to use a marketplace model. 

The winners obsess over the vertical first, model second.

Tips for Great Investor Updates

- Send monthly at pre-seed/seed, quarterly after Series A

- Lead with to the point writing and data, not overly long narrative. High data-to-word ratio when possible

- Include visuals (charts, graphs, screenshots) when possible as pictures are worth a 1,000 words

- Explain your thinking and why you did things

- Be forthright about lows. Explain what happened, what you learned, and how you're addressing it.

- Make asks easy to act on. Want intros? Create a sheet with targets mapped to each investor.

- Keep it skimmable. Investors read dozens of these so make sure they can easily digest the most important items. 

- Send on a consistent schedule. Builds trust and keeps you top of mind.

As a platform, X rewards you for posting more, and LinkedIn does not. 

So I'm sharing a lot more vignettes on my X account than I am on LinkedIn.

In my office hours yesterday, someone mentioned that they really appreciated all my tweeting, and all the other folks didn't know that I had an X account where I posted more.

I just published a new essay: LLMs vs. Marketplaces

Many are predicting that LLMs will get between the customer and major marketplaces like Amazon, Airbnb, and DoorDash, destroying their economics in the process.

It's true that LLMs put new pressure on marketplaces, and that some of them will struggle. But many will be just fine.

In the essay I outline which marketplaces are likely to win the battle, and which are likely to lose.

I also lay out a playbook for marketplaces to thrive in the LLM era:

1. Do the hard things that LLMs won’t. You must be a managed marketplace.

2. Build AI search natively into your product. Your customers will expect it.

3. If you have high market share, play hardball with the LLMs. You have more leverage than most people think.

4. Now is not the time to get greedy on monetization. Your margin is ChatGPT's opportunity.
