I thought I was doing all the right things that will lead to success. In a way, I was. I got the good grades, got the degrees, the qualifications and landed a job at the world’s best Investment Bank at Goldman Sachs.

I had a high-flying career in the City of London and even had the opportunity to live and work in New York. My life looked great on paper, but I felt that something was missing.

I attended a roundtable event for entrepreneurs in London recently and encountered something that I thought was shocking.

I've been sitting on this story for a while, and wasn't sure if I should share this or not.

It was a large event with a famous guest speaker.

I arrived early. The room was almost empty, except for one man sitting at a table near the stage.

I walked over, smiled, and said,
“Hi, I’m Sindy, nice to meet you.”

❗ He shook my hand, 𝐬𝐚𝐢𝐝 “𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮,” 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲.

He didn't introduce himself
He didn't ask me one question
He just sat there… in silence.

I remember thinking, that’s odd.

Maybe I didn't look important enough?

You don’t have to be overly friendly, but a simple, “Nice to meet you too, I’m XYZ” would’ve gone a long way.

Isn't that simple courtesy?

A few minutes later, two women joined the table. They introduced themselves, and we got chatting about what we each do. 

When I mentioned that I used to work for Goldman Sachs before starting my coaching business, the man suddenly leaned in:

“𝐎𝐡, 𝐦𝐲 𝐧𝐞𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐰 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐆𝐨𝐥𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐒𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐃𝐮𝐛𝐚𝐢.”

❗And just like that, he was interested.

But it was too late!

He already lost me at 'hello' and 𝐈 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 

👉🏽  If the only reason someone chooses to engage is because of a name, a title, or a logo, that’s not connection, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

We forget that the person next to us could be anyone.

▪️ A future business partner
▪️ A potential mentor
▪️ A hidden genius

❗ 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐰𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐰𝐞’𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐲.

👉🏽 True connection starts with curiosity.

It shouldn't matter who people work for, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞.

👉🏽 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲, 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐢𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐫, 𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬.

🔹 The best relationships, in business and in life, are built on authenticity, not appearances.

“I feel lost.”
“My job might be at risk.”
“I’m not sure what to do next.”

Over the last few months, I’ve heard these words more than ever, from clients, friends, and people across industries who are watching the world change faster than they can process.

▪️ Political uncertainty
▪️ Economic instability 
▪️ AI reshaping roles at a pace nobody predicted
▪️ A job market that feels both demanding and confusing

❗ And in the middle of all this, people are being told:

 👉🏽 “Upskill.”
 👉🏽 “Be prepared.”
 👉🏽 “Stay relevant.”

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧’𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐞?

If you’re feeling unsteady right now, let me say this clearly:

You are not failing.
You are not behind.

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐚 𝐦𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮’𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧.

🔹One of my favourite quotes is by Viktor Frankl:

 “𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐰𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬.”

Not through panic
Not through fear

 👉🏽 But through clarity, courage, and small, steady steps.

▪️ We don’t have to have all the answers now
▪️ But we can choose to stay open
▪️ We can choose to stay curious

𝐖𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

So if you’re reading this feeling stuck or discouraged, I want you to remember this:

▪️Don’t stop
▪️Don’t give up
▪️Don’t assume this is the end of your story

You are capable of far more than the current moment suggests.

And sometimes, the path becomes clear only after we take the first brave step forward.

They pay attention to how aligned they feel, how present they are, and how much peace they experience in their daily life.

🔹 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩:

Define your top three success indicators that have nothing to do with numbers. 

For example:

▪️ Presence
▪️ Freedom
▪️ Peace

👉🏽 When you know what truly matters, decisions become simpler. That’s when alignment replaces anxiety.

My client led a large-scale AI transformation in a global oil & gas firm…

And guess what he was rewarded with?

❗ 𝐀 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥-𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲.

Yes, you read that right.

He successfully designed and delivered an AI-driven operational overhaul that made the organisation more efficient, less error-prone, and significantly faster.

𝐇𝐞 𝐧𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐠𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥:

▪️ Political tension around change and visibility
▪️ Stakeholders worried about losing relevance
▪️ Leaders anxious about technology replacing roles
▪️ Teams unsure how AI would affect their day-to-day

👉🏽 He focused on facts, strategy, long-term value, and what the company needed to stay competitive.

𝐇𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐞. 
𝐇𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

And when all was done…

❗ His own job was eliminated.

Because 

▪️ The process worked too well
▪️ He made himself “less necessary”
▪️ The company became more efficient

❗ 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐬 𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞.

👉🏽 A high-impact contributor like him should have been:

 ➤ Promoted
 ➤ Redeployed
 ➤ Retained as a strategic advisor
 ➤ Reassigned to a new transformation area
 ➤ Used to drive efficiency across other global divisions

❗ 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐝, 𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭.

This is what happens when companies operate with short-term thinking and fear-based decision making, rather than vision and strategic foresight.

A message to ORGANISATIONS: Do better!

🔹 𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬.

 1. Redeploy high performers. Don’t discard them
 2. Reward efficiency creators. They generate long-term value
 3. Encourage innovation without penalising it
 4. Create psychological safety around tech and AI adoption
 5. Make workforce planning strategic, not reactive

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐲 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭-𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭.

A message to EMPLOYEES who want to introduce AI or new technology but fear losing their job:

🔸 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧.

1. Document your unique human value
2. Position yourself as the operator, not the obstacle
3. Build alliances early
4. Tie everything to business risk
5. Don’t make yourself redundant. Make yourself essential to the transition.

🔸 Studies in positive psychology show that 𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐱𝐲𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐢𝐧, the same “feel-good” chemicals that enhance focus and performance at work.

👉🏽 If you can, this week, block out two hours to do something for someone else; uninterrupted.

The Psychology of Enough Series - 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝟑: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐥

❗Comparison is one of the quickest ways to erode joy.

Our brains are wired to measure. 

It’s how we assess safety and belonging. 

But constant comparison, especially in an online world, activates the brain’s threat response. 

𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧, 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠.

👉🏽 Research consistently shows that time spent on social media correlates with lower life satisfaction. 

Because our reference point keeps shifting, not necessarily because others are doing better.

Curate your inputs.

𝐔𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐦 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲.

👉🏽 Fulfillment grows in spaces where we stop measuring ourselves against others and start reconnecting with our own definition of enough.

🍂 As the trees begin to shed their leaves, you have two choices.

You can see it as an ending.
Or you can see it as time for preparation.

I choose the latter.

I often tell my clients that we, too, move through seasons.

▪️ Some are for growing. 
▪️ Some are for grounding.
▪️ Others demand stillness.
▪️ Some seasons invite action.

All of them are important.

So as we enter this quieter, more introspective time of year, perhaps ask yourself:

▪️ What am I ready to let go of?
▪️ What version of myself am I preparing to grow into?
▪️ What seeds do I want to plant for the spring ahead?

As a performance coach and psychologist, I see every day how powerful intentional reflection can be. 

🔸 When we align our energy, our purpose, and our actions, we don’t only get through the seasons, we thrive in each one of them.
