📍 It was at Prairie that I first started developing my sales + customer service methodology. 

I was required to make 100+ cold calls a day to earn my salary but it was highly ineffective and mentally draining... I started a combination approach of researching on LinkedIn and approaching with specific proposals (email, warm call, and LinkedIn personalized connection requests) which opened the door to long-lasting relationships.

We could validate the business opportunity (in Oil and Gas, and Construction sectors), establish an investment case, and structure and negotiate terms for potential investments with limited resources.

My challenge was developing a complete understanding of an emerging company by evaluating its market opportunity, competition, product/service, sales and growth, operations, financial statements and projections, human capital, equity needs, and capital structure.

📍 Maintaining great relationships with my entrepreneurs, our technical team and the different financial institutions was key!

I had a unique experience of managing a separate portfolio that invested in public shares while building our portfolio companies. Annual reports offer a different perspective on market trends, strategic planning and operations than the Startups in our portfolio.

📍 Strategic Planning is a POWERFUL process

The different approaches to strategic planning such as SWOT Analysis, Six Sigma, Balanced Scorecard, Scaling Up (One Page Strategic Plan), PEST, and Blue Ocean created a dynamic hands on experience. Managing the execution is where most companies failed… you can’t take a static approach. You have to constantly pivot, re-evaluate and drive forward!

I joined a copywriting course through Seth Godin's Akimbo & met this dynamic marketer that wanted to learn more about sales (Morgan Smith)

I was teasing him about the misalignment between sales & marketing

Which turned into more than talk... we started running weekly experiments together to validate every process, framework & tool we could find

But now we needed a place to share!

That's where the B2B Power Hour was born

We shared our experiments on social selling, ABSD, cold email, AI, SEP's, Async video, virtual events, gifting & SO MUCH MORE in our shows to help sellers win in this digital environment.

It didn’t take long until we found clear winners

AND those new skills/frameworks/technology were in high demand due to COVID. We were getting 100's DM's a week to train sales teams what we learned

One workshop turned into a series…

Behold, a nerdy writing reminder I keep needing: When you start a sentence with "as a [descriptor/noun],..." the next subject better refer to that same descriptor/noun!!!

✅ As an emerging technology, AI is transforming workflows and, in some cases, atrophying skill sets. 
✅ As the most talented members of the GTM team, marketers are always busy.
❌ As marketers, dashboards are the bane of our existence. 
❌ As aliens, the earth looked strange and small to them. 

"As" indicates that the rest of the sentence will be about the group you introduce at the beginning of the sentence. If you want to switch subjects, English offers lots of other preposition options you can use. ("for" or "to" often fit the bill!) 

But when you start with "as," you need to stay succinct and focused on that singular group. 

Better yet, in the latter two examples above, you don't need the "as" phrasing at all. "Dashboards are the bane of marketers' existence" and "The earth looked strange and small to the aliens." 

Stay succinct. Use "as" with care.

isn't it cute how many of us say, "want to hop on a call?" or "i'm gonna hop" at the end of our zooms, like we're all just lil worker bunnies hanging out!!! 🐰

You heard it here first, folks 👑

I love a rousing call to action at the end of a research report... but do you want to know my dirty lil secret? 

If I've done my job right, the right people aren't paying super close attention to that CTA. (Hear me out, okay?)

If I've made the case for the solution and painted the data in a compelling enough way, a reader who's primed to buy is *already* tripping over herself to click that "talk to our team" hyperlink — or at least to share the report with key decision-makers to make the case for the solution at hand. 

That final summary of the problem-and-solution or before-and-after can be the cherry on top, sure... but I'm hoping they've already decided that they need to know more.

(And I put as much creative care and strategy into every line of the report as I do the CTA...so you can bet that's EXACTLY what's happening.)

I’ve been creative my whole life. So when I picked a career, marketing seemed like an easy decision; I just didn’t realize what I was giving up. 

When creatively inclined people step into creative-adjacent careers, they feel like they’ve won the jackpot. (At least I did.) “You mean I get to use my creative skills AND actually earn a living wage?!” we think. 

But the warts show up fast. 

“Using your creative skills” for ad campaigns or slide decks to sell a product is rarely the life-giving work we hope it will be. 
Companies tend to embrace KPIs, competitive parity, or safe messaging over risks and unique and genuinely creative ideas.
And what limited creative resources we have, we spend during our workday. 
So our joy-based creative dreams (the novel, the band, the new creative hobby we want to learn) get the worst of our energy, if any of it. 

What’s an exhausted creative to do? 🎨

I haven’t figured this out. Far from it. 

But I’ve clawed and scraped to make space for my creativity in recent years: first, in the margins of my life and now, on the center stage and next, by embracing work that doesn’t deplete me but inspires me. And I’m inviting others to join me.

What Happens to the Artist Inside the Marketer?

Data isn't "boring." Most content is just bad at contextualizing it.

That blog post just tosses out a stat (of dubious age and origin) without explaining why it matters. 
The research report dumps out original data without weaving it into a story.

Don't assume your reader automatically gets why the data matters. Give them enough context to care. Here are a few ways to do it.

1. Tell them "so what." Instead of just saying that 98% of marketers are sleep-deprived and moving on, explain how that affects their work (and share a quote about the impact if you can!). 

2. Translate the data. If your tool streamlines a task that used to take hours into a 7-minute to-do, quip that that's as long as it takes to make a cup of coffee. If your platform saves 160 hours in a year, point out that that's 4 weeks of an FTE's work.

3. Compare the data points. When you're writing a full-scale report, put your newly introduced number side-by-side with another of your data findings — do they seem to contradict or complement each other? Does one explain the other?

4. Benchmark the stat. If you can, compare your data to findings from another industry or role to contextualize whether your stat is above or below average, or right on par — and how your audience is exceptional (for better or worse!)

5. Trace it over time. You might be telling a new data story that no one's told before. (You go, Glen Coco.) But if you can find the closest existing data from a few years ago, you can tell a story of trajectory and posit where that data is headed.

Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of becoming a B2B SaaS content marketer. 😬 🫠 

Just kidding. What kid dreams of that? 

A lot of us ended up here because we were creative people who needed a job. Writing or designing came naturally. We had good instincts. Marketing felt like a responsible, practical path. We could be creative without actually having to bet on ourselves as artists. Cause that's SCARY and bold and our parents told us we'd be starving forever.

But here's what happens when you take that path:

You're creative all day at work. You pour your creative juices into decks and campaigns and copy that sells someone else's product. And then you come home and the creative pursuits you're excited about — the novel, the instrument, the crocheting project — just sit there collecting dust. You feel so guilty about it.
