I walked into a hotel lobby last month. Spotless. Staff following every protocol.
But something felt... off.
Then it hit me.
They were following rules. Not living standards.

Here's what I've learned leading sales teams across three continents:

Good teams show up on time because the rule says 9 AM.
Great teams show up early because excellence is their standard.
Good teams hit quota because they have to.
Great teams exceed it because mediocrity makes them uncomfortable.
Good teams need permission to solve problems.
Great teams solve problems because that's who they are.

Rules tell you what you can't do.
Standards define what you won't accept.
Rules create compliance.
Standards create culture.
Rules need enforcement.
Standards need embodiment.

The best Director I ever worked with never talked about "rules."
She talked about "how we do things here."
Her team didn't follow a manual. They lived a philosophy.

When a VIP guest arrived unannounced, nobody checked the SOP. They just handled it—because their standard was "we anticipate, we don't react."
That property? Highest RevPAR in the region. Not because they had better rules.

Because they had higher standards.
