Hi, I’m Niall Cleaver, founder of Cupsly, a timeless reusable coffee cup brand launching in 2025.

But my story isn’t about a polished entrepreneur. My journey hasn’t been traditional. I left school without an English qualification, uncertain of what the future held. That failure shaped me, it forced me to think differently, fall into business, and ultimately embrace creativity, resilience, and the belief that change is possible, even when doubted.

Fast forward to today, and I’m the founder of Cupsly. The idea originated from my own frustration in my own life I couldn’t find a reusable coffee cup that matched my style. Everything felt cheap or uninspired, and I hated the idea of carrying something that didn’t reflect me. Cupsly is crafting a reusable coffee cup, elevating it into a symbol of fashion.

The debates.

I know it sounds weird, but when two generations meet, there are always going to be differences. There's always the little comments like this:

- I think you should do it this way.
- I’m not sure that’s right.
- Are you sure?

But if you take a step back… this is healthy.

It’s what every successful business should be striving for. It’s these differences in opinions that keep it interesting, and it makes your business better.

Great businesses aren’t built by avoiding difficult conversations. They’re built by welcoming them, listening to them, and using them to move forward together.

So I guess I’ve got some more debates with the old man to have.

There was a time when I’d do anything to avoid the sentence...

“I work for my family business.” But let me explain why this is so wrong.

There are so many of us who are fighting this thought, but we don't have to. It doesn't make you less of a successful person by doing so. Do you know why?

Because you bring your own style
Because you bring a younger perspective
Because you create the change the future needs

Nothing will ever be just handed to you.

If anything, for me, I've felt even more pressure because I want to make sure I take it to the next level. I want to actually earn it.

For ages, I thought success meant carving something out with only my name attached. But the truth is, showing up every day and choosing to improve what’s already there is just as hard, maybe harder.

And it keeps reminding me of something:

You’re not less ambitious because you step into a business.
You’re not less successful because you’re building onto something.

Anyway, just wanted to share what’s been rattling around my head lately.

Not long ago, I hated the idea of joining the family business.
I thought it meant I couldn’t build something on my own.

But here I am, happier than ever to be part of the mission, working toward what’s next. Building two things wasn’t the plan, but sometimes life guides you somewhere unexpected.

Last week was a big reminder of why this matters…

Two days spent deep in meetings, collaborating, and figuring out the steps to help even more researchers on their journeys.

I’ve got my buzz back. I’m loving it. Loved every minute with the Thistle Scientific team. There’s so much more to come.

P.S. I've never wanted to share this side of my journey, but it's the real side I want to share more of.

If you looked at my LinkedIn, you’d think all I do is build brands.

But behind the scenes, we’re helping cure cancer.

It's incredible to be part of this team, helping to keep the entire world safe. It feels pretty weird to finally open up about this side of my life, but I'm proud of it.

We’re designing and developing products that help researchers cure cancer, create new medicines, and tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges.

I don't know why I've never really spoken about this before, but I'm excited to share more about it and how we continue to help fight some of the world's biggest battles in 2026.

People are getting building in public wrong.

I've seen it happen multiple times...

As someone who has shared a lot of my journey on this platform, and heard everyone telling me to share more and more, but I want to touch on something...

Building in public doesn't mean:

Sharing everything.
Doing it to tick a box.
Doing it because of pressure.

Sharing in public is about strategy.

There's so much pressure for everyone to keep posting and creating content that might not necessarily work for them, but because everyone is telling them to continue to do it.

That's what happened to me, and I fell out of love with it. Losing motivation and jsut doing it out of pure discipline, but I want to go back and create the content I used to love creating, the raw, unfiltered side of my life.

SO WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT

Get other people out of your head and do what's right for you.

It took me almost two years to figure this out…

Rushing and moving quickly are not the same thing.

For a long time, I mixed the two. Everyone said, “Move fast,” but no one explained how. It's been one of the biggest lessons I've learned in business.

I presumed this meant:

Don’t think, just act
Make decisions on the spot

Turns out, that’s how you end up rushing.

And I made stupid mistakes while building Cupsly because of it. Rushing design processes and manufacturing just made everything longer.

But now, only a couple of years later, I've finally broken out of this cycle, and honestly, it’s changed everything. The old saying “sleep on it” couldn't be truer once I started doing it.

Looking back, I can see decisions I rushed that I’d absolutely make differently now. But that’s how you learn. Give yourself breathing room. Process all the information before you move. Some decisions you can’t undo.

Business is fast-paced, yes, but...

It’s also a game of patience. The bigger the decision, the more time it deserves.

Think about risk. Think about impact. Think about the possibility.

Everyone loves to talk about career advice... but this has been by far the most impactful for me.

Curiosity doesn’t make you inexperienced.

When I joined Thistle Scientific, my first instinct was to worry about what I didn’t know: the jargon, the lab protocols, the decades of expertise my colleagues bring to the table.

But every time I asked a “basic” question or admitted I didn’t understand something, I noticed something powerful. It started a conversation for change.

Over time, I’ve realised curiosity belongs everywhere, especially in business.

Because the people who ask why are often the ones who move everyone forward.

You don’t need decades of experience to make an impact:

Sometimes asking, “Why do we do it this way?” opens the door to innovation.
Sometimes being the learner means spotting what others take for granted.
Sometimes, trying things differently brings the best results of all.

A reminder I carry with me every day:

I never thought I’d be an entrepreneur.

But I was training to become one without realizing it. 

It’s 2019, I’m in my last year of uni. 

I hear about this event called Slush that’s founded by students that’s now the biggest gathering of Venture Capital in the world

(Let that sink in) 

And it was right in my “backyard”, in Helsinki. 

I applied to volunteer there. Sustainability team.

During the event:

— I met cool new people & made new friends

— Learned that volunteering is hella fun

— Fell in love with Slush Magic (iykyk) ✨

and all without spending thousands of €€€ 

(I was a broke student 🤷🏻‍♂️)

I left wanting more. 

2021: I went to Slush again. Became a Group Lead. 

2022: I volunteered at Slush again.

And this year, I rose up to be a Team Lead.

Just 1 week before I quit my job, Andreas, CEO of Shield, said 3 sweetest words a young guy like me could only wish for:

“Check your inbox :)”

There was a contract to sign.

You see, I’ve been following SHIELD and using their tool for 2 years then. 

They had a vibe and functionality. Their team was top-class. 

I wanted in. 

3 months of negotiations. I finally quit my job. They were open for business.   

When I finally got the role of Content Writer, I was tasked with one thing — keep the community engaged and build the brand’s authority further through their Company Page and part of the newsletter. 

Results?

I was able to:

- Cut down 1 hour of newsletter research
- Cut down 1 hour of newsletter writing (1,5 sections)

This freed up 2 hours for my teammate, Jaziel, to:

- Strategically place a fitting theme every week
- Focus on making sure the newsletter was headed where SHIELD wanted it to go. (time to reflect, and make more normative decisions moving forward)

We were able to keep a consistent opening rate between (50-57%) with a click rate of around 5-8%.

More than that, we were getting weekly newsletter love mentions.

Often from creators and profiles that would normally get unnoticed. 

Now, I apply the same mentality with my clients. 

I put them in the spotlight through the right stories and content. 

So they too can receive love mentions from their community (and make that $$$).

In 2021, I FINALLY landed a marketing role after being laid off 3 times from my bar job

Learned how to build systems, distribute & connect multiple channels.

Only about 200+ job applications in, I was referred to a Growth Manager, Rémy, that worked there.

From the start, I was thrown into the deep end. I had to conduct 5-10 growth experiments simultaneously for multiple marketing channels.

Our goal? Understanding where our resources were best spent.

My biggest problem was streamlining the entire process:

- Multiple social media channels
- New website & email automations
- Analyzing data & reporting it back to the team

I felt lost…

“What do I focus on?”

This was the wrong question to ask. The right one was:

“What experiment will bring the most result for our main objectives?”

See, I was afraid I lacked expertise. And I didn’t know yet how to use every system that was already in place.

Here’s what I did in the next 5 days:

- Analyzed what has and hasn’t worked before
- Checked which of the current experiments would bring the best results
- Laid out the step-by-step execution plan & time blocked it in my calendar

What’s the worst that could happen?

(Spoiler: As I was still an intern, I wouldn’t be promoted to my full-time role)

But as a result, I was praised for my proactiveness and we managed to gather valuable data on what channels to abandon entirely.

My biggest achievement was learning how to build systems, distribute & connect multiple channels.

Because of that I now always take a data-driven structured approach to solving complex problems. 

Juggling multiple elements at the same time felt challenging & chaotic but weirdly satisfying. 

Even though I had to constantly check in with the team.

About 1,5 years later, I felt that I reached my maximum potential in that role:

Before I found my 1st paid marketing role in 2021, I decided to volunteer. 

Instead of volunteering anywhere, I picked a local university’s Entrepreneurship Society.

(which explains my current entrepreneurial ambitions so well btw)

One of my biggest responsibilities as the Head of Marketing for me was running our events.

That meant:

- Finding speakers & partners for the events
- Creating content to promote the events
- Hosting the events

There was a week before the summer break, when we accelerated all the event production.

I ended up hosting 3 back-to-back webinars & workshops in a single week.

Main challenges?

→ Cross-promoting 3 events for 4-5 weeks prior across FB, IG, LinkedIn, and email

→ Dealing with last-minute delays, changes, and people not responding

The promotion was done in the priority approach, accelerating the volume of content the closer the events got.

The last-minute events required me to juggle both team, speaker, and partner communication pretty much 24/7.

I thought I was gonna lose it. Thankfully, our Community Manager was there to remind me that “We got it”.

….

How did I get through the week?

Simple. I just f*ckin did. 

Sometimes there are no fancy hero endings.

I did learn that event marketing is tough if you have no idea what you’re doing.

And I learned a whole lotta stress management techniques when things get hot.

When my 1-year term was done, I knew that the team was in the right hands.

(I may have hired specific people for the next HoM to avoid the headaches I had)

The Old Irish Pub

In 2020, I hit rock bottom:

→ No job
→ Ran out of savings
→ Stuck in a small town (Vaasa)

Then I accidentally saw a job ad:

“Looking for a bartender. The Old Irish Pub.”

I thought it was the pub in Vaasa as it just opened.

Sent my application & resume

Got the response back:

“We’d love to interview you!”

Only the email address was from The Old Irish Pub Helsinki

“Helsinki?! It’s 4,5h away from us”

3 days later, I went to Helsinki, aced the interview, and moved there completely within 2 weeks.

And oh boy, what a job it was:

→ Constant night shifts
→ Lifestyle that drained my health
→ Dealing with less desirable customers we had to call ‘guests’

There were of course good moments too: met some of my best friends there & the love of my life. 

But in the 2nd month, sh*t really hit the fan. 

We called it the ‘Copenhagen Night’ as everything you could imagine happening at a bar, happened that night:

- Broken glass & me getting cut
- Rude guests & me getting screamed at
- More drink orders we could handle & me chugging Red Bulls

And I had to train 2 new runners

Looking back, I always ask myself “How the hell did I manage to get through the night?”

My honest answer?

The adrenaline I had + the caffeine I drank made me feel like a machine.

In a single night I:

- Got glass cuts 6 times
- Drank 3 Red Bull cans
- Served 100+ drinks & cocktails
- Served at least twice no. of shots
- Managed at least 5 very drunk guests
- Taught the runners how to thrive on busy nights
- Ruled the kitchen with my teammate constantly supplying the bar with glasses

It was chaos. I hated the cuts. But I loved the adrenaline rush.

Now, whenever things get intense, I look back at my bar job.

And I always remind myself:

“You could’ve been doing it at night, exhausted, and getting multiple cuts all over your hands. Keep going.”

As I completed my 6-month internship at Recright and switched to a full-time role, there was no space or energy left in me to work at the pub.

For the past 2 months, I've been prepping for today.

Tonight, I'm flying to Tokyo for 16 nights, and I plan to work no more than 1h/day.

Here's how:

This is a milestone for me.

In 2.5+ years of running my ghostwriting business, this will be the first trip where I'm almost 100% hands-off.

6 clients. 22 LinkedIn posts per week. And the entire month of November covered.

I prepared 88 posts in advance.

Here's the exact process I used:

Step 1: Prioritize what's happening right now before I look ahead.

I didn't jump straight into November content. I made sure current and next-two-weeks content was locked in first.

If I let present work slip while planning ahead, I'd be stuck putting out fires right now.

Step 2: Map everything out and categorize by difficulty.

I looked at the entire month I'd be gone (Nov 9 to 26) and went client by client.

I categorized them by:

→ Who was easiest to write for based on how long I've worked with them
→ How fast their review process is
→ How proven their topics are
→ How hands-off they are.

One client gives me the green light on almost everything and has 5 specific daily topics.

Another was still ramping up, so I waited until early October to write for them once I had enough context.

Step 3: Schedule strategic work sprints with recovery time built in.

→ I picked two weekends, two weeks apart, to work extra hours.
→ I left one weekend in between to rest and recharge.
→ During those sprint weeks, I worked evenings and weekends writing for all 6 clients.
→ This kept me from burning out while still hitting my deadline.

Step 4: Microbatch by topic and structure for maximum efficiency.

For each client, I created a topic-per-day structure similar to my client who already had 5 specific topics mapped to each weekday.

This let me batch write in focused sessions instead of jumping around randomly.

I grouped similar topics together and knocked them out one by one.

Step 5: Split my writing into two distinct phases.

Phase 1: V1 drafts.
Raw thoughts, structure, and ideas dumped onto the page.

Phase 2: Final drafts.
Editing, adding visuals, stress-testing hooks, and leaving annotations for the client explaining my choices.

This two-phase system kept me from getting stuck in perfectionism during the creation phase.

Result: 88 extra LinkedIn posts prepared in 2 months.

I submitted everything a week before my trip. That gave me the final week to handle client edits, review feedback, and analyze all the work we've done so far to keep improving.

And now I get to spend 16 nights in Japan working no more than 1 hour a day.

2025: Send press release → Journalist skims it → Then checks your LinkedIn → Skims your company blog → Listens to your podcast clip → Scans Twitter mentions → Reads competitor coverage → Scrolls 3–6 months back on your feed → Then replies.

Most climate founders still think their tech will sell itself. They write a pitch email, cross their fingers, and get ignored.

But it's not 2000 anymore. Journalists aren't waiting in their inbox.

And the only founders they write about? The ones who already look like the obvious voice in the space.

So if you want media exposure, don't start with PR. Start with consistent content that makes you impossible to ignore.

Here's how:

Tip 1: Pick one platform and own it completely.

For climate founders, that's LinkedIn. 

Post 2–3 times per week with a mix of founder lessons, industry takes, and behind-the-scenes updates. Journalists check LinkedIn first. Make sure there's substance when they do.

Tip 2: Publish one 800-word thought leadership article per month.

Post it on LinkedIn, your company blog, or send it as a personal newsletter. 

Doesn't matter where. What matters is depth. These longer pieces show journalists you can think beyond hot takes. They give reporters substance to quote and link to. And they position you as someone with real expertise, not just engagement tactics.

Tip 3: Document your founder journey publicly (the messy parts included)

Share the decisions you're making in real time. The regulatory hurdles. The failed pilots. The customer conversations that changed your roadmap. 

Journalists love founders who are transparent, not polished. Vulnerability builds trust faster than any press kit.

Tip 4: Connect with hundreds of journalists and PR folks proactively, months before you need them.

100s of journalists cover climate, tech, and startups. 

Start building relationships now, not when you're ready to pitch. Comment on their work. Share their articles with your take. Send a DM when they publish something that resonates.

Tip 5: Make it stupid-easy for them to cover you.

When a journalist does check you out, they should find: 

• Data points they can cite 
• Clear founder bios with credentials 
• High-res photos ready to download 
• A media kit or one-pager on your site
• Quotable soundbites in your recent posts 

Remove every excuse for them to pass on your story.

The reality? PR doesn't work anymore if you're starting from zero visibility.

But if you've been showing up consistently, journalists will come looking for you.

That's when the press release actually works.

Founders, what's one story in your industry you wish a journalist would cover right now?

Sales teams are sitting on the most underused follow-up asset: 

Their CEO's LinkedIn posts.

Your CEO posts 3x/week on LinkedIn.
Your sales team never references it.

That's a missed opportunity.

I've been writing LinkedIn content for climate tech CEOs and founders for 2.5+ years. Companies that repurpose founder content for sales enablement shorten their 6-12 month B2B sales cycles.

Here's how to write LinkedIn posts your sales team can actually use in follow-ups:

Tip 1: Start posts with problems your prospects are facing right now.

Open with the exact challenge your ideal customer is dealing with today. Use their language, not yours. For example: "Everyone's talking about scaling from $5M to $20M, but nobody talks about what breaks when you hit $10M."

When your sales team follows up, they can say: "Saw our CEO wrote about the challenges at $10M ARR. Curious if you're experiencing any of that?" Instant warm conversation starter.

Tip 2: Use the borrowed credibility format to create instant relevance.

The format: "I met a [prospect's role] who [achieved impressive result]. Here's what they did differently..."

Example: "I met a VP of Operations who cut their energy costs by 40% in 8 months."

When your sales team reaches out to similar prospects, they can say, "Our CEO just shared a story about a VP Ops in a similar situation. Thought you'd find it relevant."

Tip 3: Reference internal triggers that signal buying readiness.

Call out the specific moments when companies realize they need a solution. Things like: "Growing past 5-6 crews," "Drowning in service tickets," "Hitting the limits of spreadsheets."

These triggers tell prospects: we know exactly where you are. When sales follows up, they can ask: "Are you hitting any of these inflection points?" It naturally qualifies the prospect.

Tip 4: Include real numbers and metrics from your experience.

Don't just say "we helped a client save time." Say: "We helped a $25M company reduce their reporting time from 40 hours/month to 4 hours/month."

Specific numbers establish credibility and give sales concrete data points to reference. When a prospect asks "can you quantify the impact?", your sales team points to the CEO's post.

Tip 5: End with niche-relevant engagement questions that filter for qualified prospects.

Don't ask generic questions like "What do you think?" Ask questions that only your ideal customer can meaningfully answer.

Examples:
• "What's the biggest bottleneck you're hitting between $10M and $20M?"
• "CFOs: how are you currently tracking sustainability metrics?"

When prospects comment, they're self-identifying as qualified leads. Your sales team can follow up directly with context.

Your sales team gets warm conversation starters. Your prospects feel understood, not sold to. Your CEO's content drives pipeline.

How often do you repurpose your CEO's LinkedIn content for sales?

But there's a faster way.

Educate investors at scale through content so when you do reach out, they already know who you are, what you're building, and why it matters.

I've written 550+ LinkedIn posts for climate founders raising capital. The ones that generate investor attention aren't the "vulnerable" Crying CEO posts.

They're story-driven posts weaved with actionable insights, proof of progress, and direct answers to questions investors are already asking.

Here's how to do it:

1/ Don't just celebrate milestone. Show traction.

Don't post: "So excited to announce we hit 10,000 users! 🎉"

Post:

• The specific problem those 10,000 users were trying to solve
• How fast you got there (6 months vs. 2 years matters)
• What you learned that changed your product roadmap

Investors care about your ability to learn fast and iterate. Show them you're paying attention to the right signals.

2/ Take a public stance on where your industry is heading.

Most founders play it safe.

They share news and add a generic "exciting times ahead" take. That's not thought leadership. That's commentary.

Instead, show how you think about your market.

What's everyone getting wrong? Where will regulation force the next wave of innovation?

Pick one POV per post, explain your reasoning, and back it with data or first-hand experience.

Investors follow founders who see around corners.

3/ Spotlight your team in a way that shows why they're invaluable.

Don't post: "Thrilled to welcome Sarah to the team! She's amazing."

Do post:

• Why you hired Sarah now (what gap did she fill?)
• The specific problem she'll solve in the next 90 days
• What her track record signals (ex-Tesla, scaled X from 0 to $10M)

When you spotlight a hire, you're saying: "Look at the caliber of people betting on us."

4/ Share takeaways from the rooms you're in without name-dropping.

Meeting takeaways show you're having the right conversations with customers, partners, advisors, and other founders.

Format: "Had a conversation this week with a [CFO at a Fortune 500] about [their biggest procurement challenge]. Here's what I learned..."

Then share 2-3 takeaways that show you're absorbing information investors care about.

Another gets 1-2 investor DMs and connection requests monthly without cold outreach.

They're not posting about struggles or origin stories.

They're posting proof they understand their market, execute fast, and think like Series B-worthy founders.

That's what gets you in the room.

What story angles tend to work best for you with investors?

At the World Economic Forum, a Native American chief asked a CEO: 

"Could you explain where from your home to your office, you stop being a grandfather?"

That question haunted Ulf Stenerhag for years.

I work with climate founders every day. The ones who stick with it? They're driven by something deeper than market opportunity.

For Ulf, it was that single question.

How could business leaders make decisions at work that would harm their own grandchildren?

In 2018, after 20 years running a successful pharmaceutical supplier, he sold everything and founded WAYOUT WATER, on a mission to solve the global water crisis while eliminating plastic pollution.

Here's what I learned from his story:

1/ The best climate solutions solve multiple crises at once.

1.3 billion plastic bottles are used daily. Over 2 billion people lack clean drinking water. And the bottled water we buy? Contaminated with microplastics and forever chemicals. Ulf didn't just want to provide clean water, he wanted to eliminate the entire broken system.

2/ WAYOUT's Micro-Water Plants turn any water source into drinkable water using only solar power.

Each system:

• Supplies 8,000 liters per day—enough for 2,000-3,000 people
• Prevents 5.7 million plastic bottles annually
• Saves 483 tons of greenhouse gases per year
• Converts even salt water into high-quality drinking water
• Operates completely off-grid

3/ One decision can compound for generations.

Ulf's entire company exists because of one question about being a grandfather.

He once said: "Since then, I can't make decisions that are bad for future generations."

That's the difference between a founder chasing an exit and a founder building a legacy.
