‼️Belgium’s delayed QDMTT filing deadline: A sign of much needed Pillar Two simplification to come❓  Or just a delay to its demise⁉️ 

🗓️ With just 10 working days to the original deadline, Belgium yesterday moved the date for initial QDMTT filings back 7 months to 30th June

Charitably, this is to help MNEs by aligning to the 30th June date the vast majority of countries adopted from the Model Rules. And maybe a sign that the G7 “shared understanding” will deliver the material simplifications Pillar Two needs to make implementation manageable and proportionate (and thus achieve it’s worthy & much needed ‘minimum tax’ aims)  

Pessimistically, it shows that Pillar Two is too complex for even a well resourced country like Belgium to deliver on time

The need for a 3 year transition period is the clearest indicator that the OECD - OCDE' BEPS Pillar Two was always too complex. Nearly 2 years into those 3 years, there’s broader acceptance of the need to simplify. But no clarity yet on the what, when or whether of simplification. 

So this late in the process, would the addition of a 4th transition year be a sign of much needed simplification to come? Or just a delay to Pillar Two’s demise?
