I was adopted right out of the delivery room.

But this surprised me when I met my biological family:

I met my entire biological family 2 years ago.

(Yes that’s them in the picture).

These 5 things took me by surprise.
(and number 5 was the weirdest one).

1. We had the same feet.

It was the weirdest thing to see.
I was used to seeing feet very different from mine.
Didn’t realize family could have similar feet!

2. Things got awkward (sometimes).

Yes we had a lot to catch up on.
But we didn’t grow up together.
So at times, we had no shared history.

3. I had so much love for my nephews and nieces.

I grew up as an only child.
But now I was “introduced” to nephews and nieces.
I instantly loved them. Even though we’d just met.

4. We had to work on building connection.

Just because we were related by “blood”:
It didn’t mean there would be instant rapport.
We had to build our relationships from scratch.

5. My biological father also loves public speaking.

He loves getting up on stages.
Just. Like. Me.
But I've never lived with him.
Never been “inspired” by his speaking.

I’m not saying “public speaking” runs in the blood.
But it’s something I can’t explain.

When you ask someone “Where are you from?” 

What they hear is: “You don’t look like you belong”. 

This makes immigrants feel out of place. 
(Even if you have the best of intentions). 

So instead of: 
“Where are you from?” 
Ask: 
“Where did you grow up?” 

One questions belonging. 
The other shows curiosity. 

Instead of: 
“Your English is so good!” 
Say: 
“You explain things very clearly” 

One implies surprise. 
The other shows respect.

When you make people feel welcome, 
You rise above differences in skin color or accents. 

You relate to people on a human level. 

And that makes you powerful and unforgettable. 

PS - anything in the cheatsheet surprising for you? 

PPS - and no, asking “But where are you REALLY from?” is worse!

President Obama once froze on stage. 

I know because I asked his speechwriter Terry Szuplat. 

This is what happened: 

Young Obama had delivered speeches before. 

So for his next speech, he thought “no big deal”. 
He didn’t prepare, didn’t practice. 

But this time - he was speaking to a bigger audience. 
Higher stakes. 

Midway through, he lost his train of thought. 

And froze. 

It wasn’t nerves. 
It wasn’t fear. 

It was overconfidence. 

Here’s the real lesson: 

When the stakes are high, you feel out of your depth. 

Just “confidence” won’t save you. 
Preparation will.

This is how I lead rooms of white male leaders.

You don’t need to “fit in” to belong.
You need to make your presence felt.

Do this to speak with power in any room:

1. Connect first, inform later.
Take time to connect with the audience.
Share why you matter first, deliver content later.

2. Enunciate like a pro.
Articulate every word clearly.
You’re signaling: “this is worth hearing”.

3. Lead with the headline first.
Don’t bury the lede with too much context.
Stating the point first gets quicker buy-in.

4. Never ramble or over-explain.
When you're done with a point, pause.
Let them ask questions to know more.

5. Watch out for weak words.
Drop “Does that make sense?”
Psychologically, they lower your authority.

When you present,
You’re not there to “deliver slides”.
You’re there to create an experience.

When you make your presence felt,
They never forget you.

You can do 3 simple things to get yourself ready:

1. Start with low-stakes opportunities:

→ Open mic storytelling events.
→ Share a project that you worked on publicly.
→ Sign up for a career talk at your alma mater.

2. Create a “positive feedback loop”:

→ Every time you do a talk, note what went well.
→ Use that as proof for yourself that you can do more.

3. Build a “big idea” that you stand for:

→ “Systematize” your expertise to prove your value.

Every day that you procrastinate,
Your competition wins.

Don’t wait to feel ready.
Don’t wait to say yes.

Your future self will thank you.

“I don’t want to brag” → “I’m proud of what I’ve done”
“I made a mistake, I’m dumb” → “I’ll learn from this”
“I don’t know how to sell” → “I know how to help”
“I can’t do this” → “I can experiment with this”
“I’m going to fail” → “I’m going to try this”

We are all stories that we tell ourselves.

If your story doesn’t serve you, change it.

When you change the way you speak to yourself:
You change the way you speak to the world.

Why smart people sound less confident than they are:

(We fixed this for my Google client, she got promoted)

This is how we did it:

M was a non-native English speaker.

She felt nervous every time she did a presentation:

→ She would memorize a script.
→ She felt extreme lack of confidence.
→ She spoke too fast and stumbled over words.

BUT she knew she had to be visible to get promoted.

So we started working together.

2.5 months in, M:

→ Stopped relying on memorizing scripts.
→ Spoke to an audience of 500+ at Google.
→ GOT PROMOTED.

When you speak well, you don’t just get applause.

You get the credit you deserve for your work.

But more importantly:

Speaking well gives you a new type of confidence.

One that no one can take away from you.

P.S. On a scale of 1-10, how nervous do you feel before a big talk?

A “fake” smile destroys trust.

I’ll show you how to spot a real vs fake smile:

You see two smiles in the picture.

One is genuine.
One is fake.

Can you tell which one’s real?

Here’s the best way to find out:

A fake smile doesn’t reach the eyes.
A real smile includes your eyes smiling too.

When you notice someone’s mouth smiling -
But their eyes don’t - 
There is a disconnect.

That makes your brain uncomfortable.

And an uncomfortable brain doesn’t trust easily.

(This is why you should “smile with your eyes”).

You never know what a “fake smile” is hiding.
Now you know how to spot one.

This course, designed by the Innovation for Wellbeing Foundation (IWF), was rigorous and rewarding. We dove deep into evidence-based tools and methods, and we each had to prove our skills through live demonstrations and presentations.

পাবলিক স্পিকিং মানুষের ইতিহাসের খুব পুরোনো একটি শিল্প, যা আমাদের চিন্তার ভেতরেই গেঁথে আছে। ভাষা তৈরি হওয়ার পর থেকেই মানুষ একে অন্যের সঙ্গে গল্প, আশা আর স্বপ্ন ভাগ করে নিতে শিখেছে। কল্পনা করা যায় রাত নেমে এলে আগুন জ্বলে উঠেছে, একজন বয়স্ক মানুষ উঠে দাঁড়ালেন, চারপাশের চোখগুলো তার মুখের দিকে স্থির হয়ে আছে, আর তিনি বলতে শুরু করলেন। কথার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে শ্রোতারা মনে মনে সেই ঘটনাগুলো দেখতে থাকে। আশ্চর্যের বিষয় হলো, আলাদা আলাদা মানুষের মাথার ভেতরের মস্তিষ্ক তখন একসঙ্গে সাড়া দিতে শুরু করে। সবাই একসঙ্গে অবাক হয়, হাসে, কাঁদে। সেই মুহূর্তে বক্তার মস্তিষ্কে গাঁথা জটিল তথ্যের ছাপ কোনোভাবে শ্রোতাদের মস্তিষ্কে পৌঁছে যায়, আর তা বহু বছর এমনকি সারাজীবন থেকেও যেতে পারে, ভবিষ্যতের আচরণকে প্রভাবিত করে।

মানুষের সব গুরুত্বপূর্ণ অগ্রগতি ঘটেছে কারণ মানুষ ভাবনা ভাগ করেছে এবং একসঙ্গে কাজ করেছে। প্রথমবার দল বেঁধে বড় শিকার ধরার সময় থেকে শুরু করে চাঁদে মানুষের প্রথম পা রাখা পর্যন্ত, বলা কথা থেকেই তৈরি হয়েছে অবিশ্বাস্য যৌথ অর্জন। আজও বিষয়টা আলাদা নয়। একজন নেতা হোক বা কোনো উদ্দেশ্যের পক্ষে কথা বলা মানুষ, পাবলিক স্পিকিং মানুষের মধ্যে সহমর্মিতা তৈরি করে, উত্তেজনা জাগায়, জ্ঞান আর উপলব্ধি ছড়িয়ে দেয় এবং একটি যৌথ স্বপ্নের দিকে নিয়ে যায়।

এখন এই কথার শক্তি আরও বেড়েছে। আগের দিনের ক্যাম্পফায়ার আজ পুরো পৃথিবী। ইন্টারনেটের কারণে একটি বক্তব্য কয়েক মিলিয়ন মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছাতে পারে। যেমন ছাপাখানা লেখকদের শক্তি বহুগুণ বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছিল, তেমনি ওয়েব বক্তাদের প্রভাব বাড়িয়ে দিয়েছে। শুধু তাই নয়, এখন এই দক্ষতাকে এমনভাবে বাড়ানো যায় যা প্রাচীন মানুষ কল্পনাও করতে পারেনি। মুহূর্তেই উচ্চমানের ছবি দেখানো যায়, ভিডিও আর সংগীত যুক্ত করা যায়, আর হাতে থাকা একটি স্মার্টফোন দিয়েই মানুষের জমে থাকা জ্ঞানের বিশাল ভাণ্ডারে হাত বাড়ানো যায়। ফলে একটি প্রাচীন শিল্প হঠাৎ করেই বিশ্বজুড়ে পৌঁছানোর ক্ষমতা পেয়ে গেছে।

এই সময়টা এমন এক সময় যখন আমাদের এই দক্ষতার সবচেয়ে বেশি দরকার। অনেক সমাধানের ধারণা আজও অদৃশ্য থেকে যায়, কারণ যাদের মনে সেগুলো আছে তারা সেগুলো স্পষ্টভাবে তুলে ধরার আত্মবিশ্বাস বা কৌশল জানেন না। অথচ ঠিকভাবে বলা একটি সঠিক ধারণা আলোয়ের গতিতে সারা পৃথিবীতে ছড়িয়ে পড়তে পারে। তাই কীভাবে একটি ভাবনাকে সবচেয়ে ভালোভাবে মানুষের কাছে পৌঁছে দেওয়া যায়, তা বোঝার মধ্যে বড় উপকার আছে, শুধু বক্তার জন্য নয়, আমাদের সবার জন্য, যাদের সেই কথাগুলো শোনা দরকার।

ভালো খবর হলো, এই দক্ষতা শেখা যায়। সত্যিই শেখা যায়। তাই এটি এমন এক নতুন ক্ষমতা, যেটা বয়স নির্বিশেষে সবাই কাজে লাগাতে পারে। একে বলা যায় উপস্থাপনার সাক্ষরতা। ভবিষ্যতে আজকের চেয়েও বেশি করে, নিজের ভাবনা অন্য মানুষের কাছে তুলে ধরতে পারা প্রতিটি শিশুর আত্মবিশ্বাস গড়ে তুলতে, কাজের জায়গায় এগোতে, বা নিজের রেখে যাওয়া ছাপ তৈরি করতে অপরিহার্য হয়ে উঠবে। পুরোনো দিনের আগুন থেকে জন্ম নিয়েছে নতুন এক আগুন, যা মন থেকে মনে, পর্দা থেকে পর্দায় ছড়িয়ে পড়ে, সময় এসে গেছে এমন ভাবনার স্ফুলিঙ্গ জ্বালিয়ে দেয়। এই বিষয়টি সত্যিই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এখন সেই আগুন জ্বালানোর সময়।
