Neither my husband nor myself have a farming background, we didn’t grow up around livestock and we both had very small vegetable gardens as kids.

We wanted to get involved in small-scale farming because we believe that big agriculture is not sustainable.

I first learned about permaculture design when I started planting trees in my suburban backyard outside Dallas, Texas and they kept dying.

I learned more about the interconnected world of soil life. I got to appreciate how important water flow is, and how planting more than one thing together can help the whole do better.

After successfully planting some fruit trees, I wanted to bring animals into the picture to help increase our fertility and add diversity. 

So we made the plunge and bought a 17-acre farm. We kept a few of the original horses as boarders, and we’re grateful because we learned so much about farm life from these longtime horse owners who have seen it all.

After moving we jumped in with both feet and welcomed chickens, geese, ducks, and dairy sheep to our farm. Not to mention a few barn cats, and all of the amazing birds, butterflies, and bees.

We’ve been called “software nerds who pick up sheep turds” and that feels like a great way to put it.

The farm is an ever-evolving project, where we continue to plant more trees, and practice rotational grazing in an effort to regenerate the land and sequester carbon.

    * Wrote end-to-end functionality starting from Flex, through ASP.NET to pass SOAP messages, to coding Java server side database queries and data aggregation.

-Lead the daily bug status meetings, developed a PHP tool to display transient bug counts, managed the assignment of bugs to developers and tracked their progress.

-Learned the IBM z/Architecture assembly language by writing, testing and debugging new z/Architecture instructions using Intel's Itanium Assembly language.

-Leveraged self-modifying code to develop a dynamic debugging tool, written in Intel Itanium Architecture Assembly.

-Designed and developed two new client-side C# view modules while adjusting to changing specifications and time constraints.

-Leveraged C# serialization and SOAP request/response messages to communicate with the Linux-run server side code while tracing the messages through from C# to Java in Eclipse.

-Wrote unmarshalling code to take XML and dynamically create columns and rows in a grid and display SOAP response data to traders.

-Incoporated my modules into the existing pricing form to recalculate prices based on the changing data retrieved from the feeds.

-Became the sole developer for the C#-based test automation project (both build and test managers), implementing over 30 new features while increasing the level of stability and performance of the program.

-Leveraged C/C++ and OpenGL to create visual test cases to verify a safety critical Aerospace graphics driver.

-Traced through the graphics driver code and helped driver developers to pinpoint bugs, while acquiring a deeper understanding of graphics and low level programming.

-Developed keen interpersonal skills by working with QA for the automation program, while catering to the needs of users and keeping the MySQL back-end and the GUI front-end well organized.

-Researched and proposed a new database system and implemented the database layer changes with a co-worker.

-Reimplemented two modules of the Voice Recognition program, performed developer tests, created a personal schedule for time management while meeting release deadlines.

-Worked with a team of testers and developers to debug and maintain existing code base and also worked remotely with a team from an offsite office.

-As a Quality Assurance Engineer in 2004 I wrote and debugged Perl scripts, to set up new testing environments for different aspects of the software product.

I’m a trainer who, like many, was forced to move online in the Spring of 2020.

When everything went virtual, my next workshop was a half-day team training. The first thought to go through my head was, “How can I make this session feel like anything but a 3-hr Zoom call?!”

So I got to work.
Learning everything I could about online presenting.

And then something interesting happened.

After every virtual session, participants asked me how I ran the workshop more than about the actual workshop itself.

Ever since, I’ve been teaching others how to create more professional, engaging, and seamless online live presentations.

Because the status quo right now?
It's bad.

Most people still dread getting on 'another' virtual call. 
But it doesn't have to be that way. 

And getting better is not as complicated as you think.
