Neither my husband nor myself have a farming background, we didn’t grow up around livestock and we both had very small vegetable gardens as kids.

We wanted to get involved in small-scale farming because we believe that big agriculture is not sustainable.

I first learned about permaculture design when I started planting trees in my suburban backyard outside Dallas, Texas and they kept dying.

I learned more about the interconnected world of soil life. I got to appreciate how important water flow is, and how planting more than one thing together can help the whole do better.

After successfully planting some fruit trees, I wanted to bring animals into the picture to help increase our fertility and add diversity. 

So we made the plunge and bought a 17-acre farm. We kept a few of the original horses as boarders, and we’re grateful because we learned so much about farm life from these longtime horse owners who have seen it all.

After moving we jumped in with both feet and welcomed chickens, geese, ducks, and dairy sheep to our farm. Not to mention a few barn cats, and all of the amazing birds, butterflies, and bees.

We’ve been called “software nerds who pick up sheep turds” and that feels like a great way to put it.

The farm is an ever-evolving project, where we continue to plant more trees, and practice rotational grazing in an effort to regenerate the land and sequester carbon.

-Leveraged C# serialization and SOAP request/response messages to communicate with the Linux-run server side code while tracing the messages through from C# to Java in Eclipse.

-Wrote unmarshalling code to take XML and dynamically create columns and rows in a grid and display SOAP response data to traders.

-Incoporated my modules into the existing pricing form to recalculate prices based on the changing data retrieved from the feeds.

-Became the sole developer for the C#-based test automation project (both build and test managers), implementing over 30 new features while increasing the level of stability and performance of the program.

-Leveraged C/C++ and OpenGL to create visual test cases to verify a safety critical Aerospace graphics driver.

-Traced through the graphics driver code and helped driver developers to pinpoint bugs, while acquiring a deeper understanding of graphics and low level programming.

-Developed keen interpersonal skills by working with QA for the automation program, while catering to the needs of users and keeping the MySQL back-end and the GUI front-end well organized.

-Researched and proposed a new database system and implemented the database layer changes with a co-worker.

The best things in life usually start with a moment of courage.

This week it showed up in a few ways in our house.

My daughter threw a new tumble pass she’d been nervous to try.
The kind where you pause, take a breath, and decide if you trust yourself enough to go for it.

I made a business decision that felt uncomfortable and uncertain.
The kind where your gut says it’s right… but it still makes your stomach flip.

And I finally took an exam that had been giving me a ridiculous amount of anxiety.

Three different situations.
Same moment beforehand.

That quiet voice saying:
What if you fail?

But on the other side of each one was the same realization:

Most growth happens on the other side of the thing you’re avoiding.

My daughter landed her pass.
The business decision is already opening new doors.
And I passed the exam.

The real win though?

Doing the scary thing and taking a moment to celebrate it before rushing to the next goal.

Courage deserves celebration too!
