I became a papa.

And if that wasn’t enough of a challenge something crazy happened called COVID and then …my studio day job shut down and I was laid off.

While every evening echoed with pot banging my new business seemed to flourish. I naively thought if my business was thriving during a pandemic I could coast without a clear focus.

I believed success was assured with word of mouth.

However, by the end of the second year, my business hit a wall, and work slowed to a crawl. Panic set in. I realized I had neglected laying a good foundation for my business, and now I was left scrambling, trying to make big decisions in my own self-made tailspin.

I enrolled in an online course on brand strategy, hoping to uncover the “secrets” to building a successful business. Initially, everything clicked. But as I delved deeper, unease began to creep in. The course presented ideas that felt disingenuous, and the marketing emails from the same “teacher” were manipulative.

It was time for a shift. Instead of seeking external validation or new skills, I turned inward, striving to understand my own perspective and experiences. I researched ethical and effective marketing practices, piecing together the various elements of the marketing puzzle I had been navigating for years. 

Slowly, I rediscovered the value of my own experience and skills and created a solid foundation for my business and my marketing. The big lesson for me is that it is never too early to more clearly understand the value of your own experience and skills.

Your ability to market your work does not define your worth or the delight you bring to your craft. However, marketing can be as much a barrier to your success as a bridge, it all comes down to how you design and build it.
