Early in my career, I used to hesitate before asking questions.

Not because I didn’t have them.
But because I didn’t want to look “not smart enough.”

Questions like:

Why is this pipeline failing only in prod?
Why does this aggregation change after grouping?
Can you review this logic once more?

I worried I was asking too much.

Some people would give quick fixes.
A corrected query.
A rewritten script.
“Here, just use this.”

But one senior engineer did something different.

He never rushed.

He would open the code.
Break it down step by step.
Explain what the system was actually doing not just what it should do.

And that changed everything.

Because when someone fixes your work, you move on.
When someone explains your work, you level up.

That’s the difference between short-term help and long-term growth.

Looking back, I realize something important:

Careers aren’t shaped only by intelligence or hustle.
They’re shaped by the people who choose to invest in your understanding.

The ones who don’t make you feel small for learning.

Your data problem isn’t technical.
It’s strategic.
And most teams don’t realize that.

Last year, I sat in a room with a leadership team proudly listing their stack:
Snowflake.
dbt.
Power BI.
Airflow.
A shiny AI pilot.

It sounded impressive.

Until I asked one question:

“Which decision has fundamentally improved because of this?”

Silence.

Because tools are not a strategy.
They’re just ingredients.
And a pantry full of ingredients doesn’t mean you’re running a restaurant.

What I see too often

Data teams drowning in activity:
• New pipelines every sprint
• Dashboards nobody opens
• AI experiments disconnected from real workflows
• Governance added after something breaks

It feels productive.
But it’s not directional.

What real data strategy actually looks like
It starts uncomfortably simple.
Not with architecture diagrams.

With this:

1️⃣ What must the business win in the next 12–24 months?

Revenue expansion?
Cost control?
Retention?
Regulatory trust?

If data isn’t wired to those outcomes, it’s decorative.

2️⃣ Which decisions matter most?

Not reports.
Decisions.

• Pricing changes
• Fraud flags
• Inventory bets
• Credit risk approvals

Strategy = improving the quality and speed of those decisions.

3️⃣ Then you design the system backwards
Now tools make sense.
Now governance has context.

Now data quality is not a “data team problem.”
It’s a business reliability issue.

You build:
• Clear ownership
• Observable pipelines
• Defined metrics
• Feedback loops tied to impact

Here’s the hard truth:
Most companies don’t lack tools.
They lack alignment.

They don’t need another platform.
They need operational clarity.

And that’s why data feels busy but not valuable.
As a data leader, your job isn’t to modernize the stack.

It’s to:
→ Translate business ambition into data capability
→ Turn data from reporting into decision infrastructure
→ Build systems that outlive tools

That’s data evangelism.
Not hype.
Design.

If your strategy disappeared tomorrow,

That’s the test.

Being a 𝐰𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 comes with challenges.

And building a career after moving from India to another country adds even more.

New culture.

New expectations.
Sometimes even having to prove yourself twice as much.

But behind journeys like mine, there is almost always someone who made it possible long before the career began.

For me, that person is 𝐦𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫.

She believed in education when resources were limited.
She encouraged dreams that felt bigger than our circumstances.
She taught me resilience long before I stepped into the tech world.

Moving countries and building a career in technology didn’t start when I landed in England.

It started with the strength, sacrifices, and belief of a woman who wanted more opportunities for her child than she had herself.

Women who travel far from home to build careers in tech bring something unique.

Resilience.
Adaptability.
Perspective.
The courage to rebuild in unfamiliar environments.

Many of us didn’t just learn programming languages or data systems.

We learned how to start over, find our voice in new rooms, and keep going even when the path felt uncertain.

Representation matters.

Because every woman who succeeds in tech quietly shows the next one that she belongs here too.

This 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐃𝐚𝐲, I’m celebrating all the incredible women in tech.

At some point in your data career, you realize something uncomfortable:

Being busy is easy.

Shipping 12 dashboards in a quarter.
Migrating to a new data stack.
Closing every Jira ticket in the sprint.
Deploying yet another model to production.

This Resume Landed Me 10 Jobs In UK.
Your resume might be silently killing your career.

Not because you’re not good enough.
Not because there aren’t opportunities.

But because it’s making recruiters click “reject” in 6 seconds.

Here are the 10 most common resume mistakes I see and how to fix them 👇

1️⃣ 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭

A confusing layout can break ATS systems before a human even sees it.
Fix:
• Use chronological or hybrid format
• Keep section titles simple (Experience, Education, Skills)
• Avoid columns and fancy graphics

2️⃣ 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐭

Flashy templates often fail ATS scans.
Fix:
• Use clean fonts (Arial, Calibri, Lato)
• Stick to 1–2 font styles
• Skip text boxes and decorative lines
Simple wins.

3️⃣ 𝐒𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞

Recruiters can tell. Instantly.
Fix:
• Tailor your summary
• Mirror keywords from the job description
• Highlight relevant achievements
Pick 3–5 important terms and use them naturally.

4️⃣ 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬

No keywords = no visibility.
Fix:
• Add industry tools and terminology
• Replace vague statements with measurable impact
Instead of:
“Helped with marketing”
Write:
“Increased paid campaign ROI by 32% using Meta Ads Manager.”

5️⃣ 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬

One typo = doubt about attention to detail.
Fix:
• Proofread carefully
• Read it out loud
• Use tools like Grammarly- then do a human check

Recruiters don’t care what you were assigned.
They care what you delivered.
Fix:
• Add numbers
• Show outcomes
• Start with strong verbs
Instead of:
“Managed projects”
Write:
“Led 5 cross-functional projects delivered ahead of schedule.”

7️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Yes, this still happens.
Fix:
• Double-check phone and email
• Add LinkedIn
• Use a professional email address

8️⃣ 𝐓𝐨𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

Your resume isn’t your biography.
Include only:
• City & state
• Phone
• Email
• LinkedIn
Skip age, marital status, full address.

9️⃣ 𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠

Inconsistent spacing signals carelessness.
Fix:
• Use consistent margins
• Align job titles and dates
• Keep bullet formatting uniform

🔟 𝐒𝐮𝐛𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐲𝐩𝐞

Some ATS systems struggle with complex PDFs.
Fix:
• Use PDF for email
• Use Word (.docx) for job portals
• Test both versions before sending

A strong resume doesn’t need to be impressive.
It needs to be clear. Focused. Easy to scan.

Because in hiring, clarity beats creativity.

Who is responsible for data quality?

If you ask around long enough, you’ll eventually hear:

“Everyone.”

Which usually means…

No one.

It’s easy to say,
“As long as it gets done, does it really matter who owns it?”

But that’s the trap.

Because “as long as it gets done” is exactly what doesn’t happen when ownership is unclear.

Data quality is rarely the shiny initiative.

It doesn’t look as exciting as:
• A new AI feature
• A redesigned dashboard
• A faster recommendation engine

But it’s the foundation that determines whether any of those things can be trusted.

And without clear accountability:

• Unit tests don’t get written
• Documentation gets skipped
• Monitoring stays “temporary”
• SLAs become suggestions
• Trust quietly erodes

When responsibility is diffuse, you get:

→ Fragmented solutions
→ Uncoordinated priorities
→ Communication gaps
→ More downtime
→ More firefighting

Not because teams are careless.
But because no one is explicitly measured on preventing the problem.

Clear ownership changes behavior.

When someone is accountable for data quality:

• Definitions get standardized
• Validation gets automated
• Issues get tracked and resolved
• Trade-offs are made consciously

And most importantly- trust compounds.

Every ownership model can work:

• Central data platform ownership
• Domain-driven data product ownership
• Embedded data quality champions

But whatever you choose, it must be explicit.

Because scaling data isn’t just about pipelines and storage.

It’s about clarity.

You can’t scale what no one owns.

I recently finished reading 𝐏𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧 𝐈𝐥𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 by Maaike van Putten and Imke van Putten and I wanted to share a few thoughts.

As a cat person, I’ll admit…

The illustrated format immediately caught my attention 🐾

You don’t often see technical books lean this intentionally into visual storytelling. It’s very different from the typical dense, 500-page programming manual.

And that’s exactly the point.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥
It’s clearly designed for:
• Beginners
• Visual learners
• People who feel overwhelmed by traditional coding books

𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐥𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐏𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩:
→ Environment setup & terminal basics
→ Variables & data types
→ Control flow & loops
→ Collections
→ Functions
→ File handling
→ Object-oriented programming & inheritance
→ Debugging

The structure is sequential and intentional.

Each chapter builds on the previous one.
And importantly it includes exercises and quizzes.

Because learning to code isn’t about reading.

It’s about doing.
What I appreciated most
The tone is light.

But the technical explanations are accurate and aligned with modern Python 3 practices.

And debugging is treated as a skill in its own right not just a footnote.

That matters.

Most beginners struggle not because syntax is hard…
But because they don’t know how to think when something breaks.

𝐖𝐡𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐢𝐬 (𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭) 𝐟𝐨𝐫
This is not a book about:
• Production-scale engineering
• System design
• Data architecture

It’s a fundamentals book.

It helps someone build clarity.
Confidence.
And mental models.

And honestly, we underestimate how important that stage is.

Strong fundamentals create strong engineers.

Most AI tool reviews miss the one thing 
That actually matters in regulated environments: judgment.

I recently tested Claude AI Sonnet 4.6 for data engineering work in regulated finance.

My verdict: Worth it with one hard condition.

Used correctly, it is genuinely helpful for senior engineers.

Where it works well:
• Code generation
• Drafting technical documentation
• Reviewing pipeline logic
• Translating technical architecture into language a CFO or leadership team can act on

In other words, it accelerates the precise but repetitive parts of the job.

But here is the limitation vendors rarely lead with.

Do not use it for compliance interpretation or regulatory guidance.

The model will give you a confident, well-structured answer.

And in regulated environments, that confidence is exactly the risk.

The model does not know your firm's specific regulatory position.

Your compliance team does.

One more practical note for teams in regulated finance:

Before pasting internal schemas, system architecture, or data structures into any AI tool, check your firm's AI usage policy.

Many companies have not updated these policies yet.

But eventually your InfoSec team will ask about data residency, model training exposure, and prompt handling.

That conversation is coming.

So where does that leave us?

AI tools like Claude are excellent assistants for experienced engineers.

They speed up thinking, drafting, and iteration.

But they are not ready for autonomous roles in regulated workflows.

Not yet.

The real skill now is knowing where AI accelerates engineering
and where human accountability must stay in the loop.

Data engineers make it reliable, consistent, and analysis-ready.

• Data lakes
• Data warehouses

And designing them not just for today’s scale
but for tomorrow’s growth.

4️⃣ Collaborating with Teams

Data engineers sit at the intersection of:
• Data scientists
• Analysts
• Product teams
• Software engineers

They enable others to access the right data at the right time in the right format.

5️⃣ Optimizing Performance

Pipelines must be:
• Reliable
• Scalable
• Cost-efficient

That means tuning queries, optimizing storage, improving orchestration, and reducing latency.

No one notices when it works.
Everyone notices when it doesn’t.

The truth?

Data engineers don’t just build pipelines.

They build trust in data.

Because if your foundation is weak,
no model, dashboard, or AI system will save you.

→ When Things Go Wrong

 Pipelines break. Dashboards go blank. Models don’t run.
If Data Science fails:
 Predictions are wrong. Decisions are flawed. Business impact suffers.

Data quality doesn’t improve by accident.
It improves by design.

Most teams jump straight to tools.

But #data quality management is a system not a feature.

Here’s a practical 6-step framework to build it the right way 👇

1️⃣ 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚 𝐐𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲
Start with context.

Not all data use cases are equal:

• Analytical → BI dashboards, reporting
• Operational → Near real-time workflows
• Customer-facing → Data inside the product

Accuracy, freshness, completeness — they matter differently in each case.

Then assess:

• How many incidents occur?
• How much time is spent firefighting?
• Do stakeholders trust the data?
• Is there unrealized risk hiding beneath the surface?

You can’t improve what you haven’t measured.

2️⃣ 𝐑𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐎𝐫𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Data quality is rarely the “shiny” priority.

But it’s the foundation for:

• Trust
• Scalability
• Executive confidence
• Regulatory safety

Without accountability, documentation doesn’t get written.
Tests don’t get maintained.
Ownership becomes blurry.

Clear responsibility turns “someone should fix this” into “this team owns it.”

3️⃣ 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠
Start with fundamentals across your environment:

• Freshness
• Volume
• Schema changes
• Basic anomaly detection

Don’t only monitor one team.

Data is interconnected.

If one upstream pipeline fails, everything downstream suffers.

Wide coverage gives you a 30,000-foot view of platform health.

4️⃣ 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧
Reducing downtime is about:

• Clear ownership
• Defined escalation paths
• Smart alert routing
• Domain-level accountability

Alerts should go to the right team at the right level at the right time.

Speed of detection + speed of resolution = data reliability.

5️⃣ 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐂𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐬
Not all datasets are equally important.

Layer advanced monitoring on:

• High-dependency tables
• Executive dashboards
• Revenue-impacting pipelines

Use reliability tiers (e.g., bronze / silver / gold).

Sophisticated teams implement “monitors as code” inside CI/CD pipelines making data quality part of deployment, not an afterthought.

6️⃣ Focus on Incident Prevention
Mature data teams go beyond reacting.

They ask:
• Which domains violate SLAs most often?
• Where is reliability deteriorating?
• Which tables are unused or risky?

The goal isn’t just faster recovery.

It’s fewer incidents.

Data downtime has three variables:
• Time to detect
• Time to resolve
• Number of incidents

Strong data quality programs improve all three.

Because data trust is fragile.

And once trust is lost, it’s much harder to regain than to protect.

It’s quietly reshaping which skills matter most.

Anthropic recently analyzed which professions are most exposed to AI, based on how many tasks AI can potentially perform or accelerate.

The results are interesting.
Many white-collar roles sit right at the front lines.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐨𝐩 10 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬:
Computer Programmers – 75%
Customer Service Representatives – 70%
Data Entry Keyers – 67%
Medical Record Specialists – 67%
Market Research Analysts & Marketing Specialists – 65%
Sales Representatives – 63%
Financial & Investment Analysts – 57%
Software QA Analysts – 52%
Information Security Analysts – 49%
Computer User Support Specialists – 47%

But here’s the nuance.

The research found limited evidence that AI has impacted employment so far.

𝐈𝐧 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬:
AI isn’t replacing jobs overnight.
What it is doing is changing the task composition inside jobs.

𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞:
A teacher’s job isn’t replaced by AI.

But grading assignments?
That task probably will be.

This is why the real question is no longer:

❌ “Will AI replace my job?”

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬:
✅ “Which parts of my job will AI automate and which parts will become more valuable?”

Interestingly, Gen Z is already adapting.

77% say they want careers that are hard to automate, and more young workers are exploring skilled trades like carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work.

𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐛𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐀𝐈 𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐞:
• Physical work
• Real-world problem solving
• Human interaction
• Context that machines struggle with

The future of work isn’t about humans vs AI.

It’s about humans who know how to work with AI.

And the biggest winners will be those who learn how to:

• Automate repetitive tasks
• Focus on high-judgment work
• Combine technical skills with human insight

The AI shift isn’t about fewer jobs.

It’s about different work.
