Want to know what happened when only 3 people 🙃 turned up to my workshop…?

A few weeks ago, a private community invited me to run a branding workshop. 

Before I said yes, I asked myself the same questions I ask before any speaking gig:

→ Can I genuinely offer value to this audience?
→ Does this opportunity line up with my own brand values and goals?
→ Could this gig lead to new clients or valuable publicity?

Payment matters too, of course, but alignment matters more. I’ve turned down well-paid speaking opportunities when it didn’t feel like the right fit.

So you can imagine the sinking feeling when only 3 people showed up to the workshop that I thought so hard about whether or not I should run. 

THREE! That is a sum total of just 6 eyeballs and 6 ears, to be clear. 👀👂

Trying to run a great session for a tiny group is tough, even when you really want to show up fully.

Had I misread the opportunity? Was it a total bust?

But a few days later, one of those 3 pairs of eyeballs and ears reached out because there was something he wanted to discuss. 

(The email actually went to spam and thankfully he was kind enough to follow up on LinkedIn, but that’s a story for another time 😜)

And a week later, he officially signed on for a 5-figure branding package.

It was a good reminder: 

Showing up for the right people matters WAY MORE than showing up for lots of people.

Quality over quantity may be a cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason.

💥 You. Will. Mess. Up.💥

Recently, a client came to me for branding, including naming.

I’d never done naming before, but I figured: “How hard could it be?”

So I sent off my regular proposal with my regular price and my regular timeline, wearing my regular smile. 

Then I started reaching out to professional namers (yes, it’s a real profession, and it’s intense).

The first quote came back at $8,500.

I was no longer smiling.

I eventually found someone more affordable, but it still cost me thousands out of my own pocket that I had not planned for.

And the timeline? 

Turns out that everything needed to be checked and approved by a copyright lawyer, which pushed us weeks behind schedule. 

Oops.

At the time, I was devastated. 

How could I have done this!? I mean, I stand in front of huge audiences and do 1:1 consulting, teaching people how to run their businesses better!

But it turns out it’s those stomach-drop moments and “failed” projects that force us to level up.

The perfectly polished projects are wonderful. 

They build our confidence, our reputation, and our businesses. 

But do they push us to grow as business-owners? As people?

Here’s what this mistake taught me:

→ Respect the depth of other people’s expertise. 

→ Don’t rush to close a deal before you’ve done your due diligence.

→ Be honest with yourself about your limitations.

But beyond the business tips, I learned something bigger: 

I CAN SURVIVE MESSING UP. 

The goal isn’t to eliminate mistakes.

It’s to stop using them as secret evidence that we’re impostors.

Our mistakes are proof that we’re deep in it, doing the real work of growing.

So if you’re panicking over a recent mess-up, just know: 

I’m right there with you.
