She wasn’t particularly keen on me being surrounded by ladies in bikinis so I had to make a choice. I chose the girl & today, we have a 17 year boy & a 15 year old girl. 

That pushed me accidentally into a new career direction. I became a recruiter in a small local agency on the recommendation of a friend. I knew nothing about recruitment but I wasn't worried. It was meant to be a stop gap measure until I found a real job. 

3 months became 6. 6 months became 12. 12 months became 15 glorious years where I worked in all areas of agency recruiting, then into corporate recruiting. I headed in-house recruitment teams for global pedigreed companies like Autodesk, BlackBerry, Levi Strauss, eBay & Qlik. My remit covered Asia Pacific to Europe, Middle East & Africa.

In 2014, I left my job as an International Recruitment Director & started my own Career Consulting outfit.

I take all the insider lessons learnt, all the personal lessons applied, all the secrets, shortcuts, methodologies & habits used in the recruitment industry and train/ coach my clients into jobs with an unfair advantage. 

Everything I teach about LinkedIn Branding & Career Transitions is based on real life experience that I have personally tested out myself for decades.

Delegating is not as easy as it sounds, especially for new managers who have worked hard & are used to getting it all done him or herself.

But as you go up the ranks, you discover that the load significantly increases & eventually you discover you can't do it all. That's when you have to start letting go and exercise the power of delegating responsibility out to your staff.

Delegating is not simply passing the buck to someone else then washing your hands off it. You are only handing over the functional responsibility, not the accountability. When things go wrong, you still face the heat as the popular Latin phrase goes "Respondeat superior" - let the master respond.

In 2013, a powerful case of delegation happened in China that will be discussed in business schools for decades to come.

Mr Tan had a dispute with Mr Wei and want to 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗱 of him. 

Mr Tan hired a hitman named Mr Xi.

Mr Xi hired Mr Mo.
Mr Mo hired Mr Yang. 
Mr Yang hired "another" Mr Yang 
Mr Yang hired Mr Ling.

And interestingly, Mr Ling, the final link in the chain met up with Mr Wei (The victim) and suggested that the death be faked and they both share in the fee payment.

We take the job because the work is exciting, we are learning new stuff, we want to be part of a greater mission, we want to work under a fantastic boss, we like the products, we like the brand, we love the culture etc etc etc

All very good & altruistic but so so hypocritical.

We don't talk much about the salary because it is so crude, so materialistic, so bourgeois.

But the truth of the matter is, at the end of the day, unless you have a trust fund left by daddy, recently hit all the numbers in a lottery, inherited a bungalow at Nassim Hill from Uncle Jack or married the favorite kid of a tycoon, we all do consider the salary very carefully before accepting even if we don't admit to it.

As a Head of Talent Acquisition, part of my responsibility is executive salary negotiations & I got a front row seat in how this operates from the employer's side of the table for 20 years. I understand all about compensation tables, range calculations, internal equity comparisons, rank grades, salary benchmarks etc etc etc. 

I can tell you that it's all bovine crap. 

It is not so much a skill in negotiating as it is an art in navigating.

And if you are not paid appropriately, it is all your fault. You let it happen. Then within weeks or months, you start making a fuss about being unfairly treated & you let your performance drop because of dissatisfaction.

That's why often work life is so unfulfilling.

I once worked with a government related training unit that sought me out to conduct LinkedIn training for their coaches.

I declined their request since I was also a career transitioning coach & there was a clear conflict of interest.

They laughingly assured me that they were a big organization & would not steal my ideas or build their own training program. This was purely for personal development of their coaches. With that firm assurance, I agreed & over a few months in early 2019, I dutifully upskilled almost 100 of their coaches.

As you might expect, I was too trusting. A few months later, they did exactly that. Stole my ideas & launched their own "proprietary" version.

I created a chat group & to amicably resolve the matter. They simply left the group.

They knew I couldn't do anything about it. They were too big for me to make any legal representation & could simply drown me in bureaucracy if I tried.

Their arrogance was palpable.

They had entered the agreement with the premeditated intention to defraud me. In contract law, this is the doctrine of 𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴. I knew this because in one session, the 2 ringleaders audibly mentioned to each other "𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵 𝘸𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘸". I asked him pointblank what he meant & he smiled cunningly & said nothing.

As you can see, I did not identify the organization. They can easily throw the book at me but if you are a trainer with your own innovative programs, DM me & I'll share which organization as well as the names of the conniving ringleaders so that at least you don't get entrapped by their false promises & lies.

This disgraceful, dishonorable act was extremely disappointing.

I have hyperthymesia. 

Which means I never forget. I remember in extreme detail all the good times, & all the bad times. I never forget when someone helps me up but it also means 𝗜 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 when someone pushes me down.

What they did to me had a massive consequence impacting me & my family. I got physically sick, financially damaged, mentally disturbed & emotionally distraught. They got credited while I paid the price.

I am silent now not because I'm afraid. I am silent now because I am patient.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗘


Those of us old enough to need reading glasses to get by these days, would undoubtedly have interacted with the wrong end of the 𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘯 (Malay word for the notorious cane) at some point in our wayward youth.

While caning as a formal form of punishment in Singapore prisons have been around from the 19th century onwards courtesy of the British Colonial masters, it has also been vigorously implemented in schools & homes since time immemorial.

I have been caned before by dad. A practiced flick of the wrist was enough to make me promise eternal holiness. That is until the next instance of irrepressible mischief.

The time most memorable was one sultry night in 1973. It was already dark but I had wandered off to witness a 𝘞𝘢𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘨 (Chinese opera on a public stage). I was peering into the back of the stage, when I felt a sharp sting on my 5 year old calves. Dad had found me after frantically searching all over the estate.

That smack was administered at the entrance of Dakota Crescent where block 60 now stands. It has been 52 years & I still remember every single tiny detail. The lesson stuck & I never wandered without my parent's knowledge ever again. Caning works.

Not so sure if Michael Fay felt the same in 1994 when he got the rotan for vandalizing 18 cars & stealing traffic signboards. He was to be spanked 6 strokes, with a discount to 4 after some serious lobbying by Bill Clinton, the then US president of the day.

And no, you do not get caned for littering, spitting, cutting queues, telling bad jokes, chewing gum or not flushing the toilets. These are just nefarious propaganda evangelized by folks from individual-centric societies who find the act barbaric, primitive, backward & ultimately life changing (𝘐 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘷𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵!).

For the record, caning is applicable in rapes, robberies, rioting & drug related offences. Ladies are excluded & men over 50 years old are also spared.

I recently got wind of the news about caning scammers & their accomplices & I am totally supportive of this development that these nasty malicious life destroying criminals will now face these same consequences for their crimes.

And even as he grows stronger & stronger each day, I'm still happy to carry all the load for him. And eventually one day when I am way too old to carry any load, but if he needs me to, I will still gladly carry all I can.

But doing so 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘦 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘩𝘦 would be doing him a great disservice.

One day, I will be gone & he will be the one carrying all the load for himself & his family. He needs to get strong.

So I seek not that he has a lighter load, but I ask that I can help him get broader shoulders.



You feel the weight of load you're carrying? A toxic job? A broken relationship? A betrayal? An abandonment?

Take it simply as training to build stronger, bigger & broader shoulders. Don't push away the training, accept it bravely face on.

𝗔 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗙𝗘𝗦𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡


A little known secret about me. 

It's not something I'm entirely proud of but it's a lifetime chronic obsession that's so entrenched that I can't just give it up no matter how hard I tried.

𝗠𝘆 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗮 𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝘁.

𝘗𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘰 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘭𝘺.

I started young. Hiding in my room behind locked doors. Pouring over book after book after book. I'd keep the music on & the fan off to avoid disturbances & create the right mood.

Drops of sweat would drip down the side of my face in that steamy sauna like room but I couldn't stop. In a strange way, it brought me peace from the difficulties of life.

I'd hear mum calling for me to come down for dinner. I'd yell back asking for a few minutes. Then a few minutes more, then a few minutes more. But I never stopped until mum sent my sister to bang on the door.

I'd scream for her to stop, desperately collecting everything from the floor. Bits of paper, oftentimes wet & sticky.

This addiction continued into adulthood.

It wasn't too disruptive and only when I started paying for it that things got edgy.

There were phases in my life when I actually did manage to stop. When work got really busy, when I found companionship in a girlfriend, when I got exhausted from badminton.

I have now kept everything safely locked up in a box in the store room, away from prying eyes of the wife and kids. They were for my own enjoyment only.

The temptation is still strong & there have been days when I started to go digging in the storeroom, but stopped when the kids questioned what I was up to.

𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗞𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗥𝗢-𝗧𝗜𝗣 - 𝗥𝗘𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚


The 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 option is found in every post published. (𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦'𝘴 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘵𝘰𝘰)

Simply, it is to take any post (your own or otherwise) & sharing it in one of two ways.

1. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 - This essentially creates a brand new post with the reposted post as an attachment. This is when a post catches your eye & you wish to expand on it. Any engagement (ie likes, comments) from this will not flow back to the original post.

2. 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 - This option takes the entire original post & shares it with the LinkedIn universe. Any existing likes, comments etc will be brought forward along & any new ones will be added to it. This is essentially used to get more engagement with another distribution cycle. (pushing the flattened sugarcane into the pressing machine again for that extra bit of sweet nectar)

I often use option 2 myself & I openly encourage the #LBFalumni to do it as well. I am trying to get more views. Plain & simple. Anyone who does a repost is also simply working at getting more views, no matter what excuses they hide behind.

It is hilarious when I see the same folks quietly do a repost yet denounce the value of views. Thumbing their noses at the people who do it as low class, egotistical people with no friends declaring that views are just vanity metric & below their high status in life. That is ironical, hypocritical & clearly ignorant.

𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 & 𝗮𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁.

It is the very channel by which you reach out to folks who will either buy your talent (𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘰𝘺𝘦𝘦), a service/ product (𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘰𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳) or your ideas/ opinions (𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘴 𝘢 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘳).

I always find it very strange that many proudly announce that views are not important but the relationships are, without realizing that 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴.

Writing a post & not caring about views is like going to a buffet but just to see the gorgeous spread without eating a bite.

Don't be mistaken.

Being happy with good view numbers isn't the same as glorifying yourself on a pedestal. There are no tee shirts or mugs from LinkedIn no matter how many million views you get. It is just simply a means to an end.

𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗦 𝗦𝗔𝗬 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗠𝗘


I've attended many training sessions in my time, ranging from programming to networking to advance management theories. And truthfully, it can often be boring and monotonous.

LinkedIn is very exciting to me because I know what it can do to change lives, but my clients don't know it yet. So it's always just a little bit concerning with attending a technical training of this sort.

𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥𝘐𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘦 𝘢 𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺 𝘦𝘹𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸.

This is one of the the 𝟱𝟱𝟬+ 𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗱𝗜𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 that my clients have so thoughtfully given me. They are requested but not reciprocal (Meaning I don't get one by giving one).
