At Lights by the Lake, beneath the glowing Cloud Pagoda, legends stepped out of lantern-light: Sun Wukong born from stone, Tang Sanzang on a sacred quest, with Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing facing trials from the Flaming Mountain to the White Bone Demon. Each scene felt less like fantasy, more like a mirror—ego, temptation, doubt… and the discipline to rise above them.

My favorite moment? Watching my son discover these stories for the first time—pointing at Wukong’s flying cloud, asking “why the Monkey King was punished,” and connecting courage with kindness. At the National Library’s Art Studio, he sketched his version of Wukong—proof that when culture meets creativity, curiosity multiplies.

Beginning Diwali — A Festival of Lights, Faith & Family Traditions

Began the five-day Diwali festival yesterday (Day of Vasubaras) with a serene visit to the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple in Little India — one of Singapore’s oldest Hindu temples, built in the 1880s and dedicated to Goddess Kali, symbolising strength, courage, and transformation.

The festive atmosphere along Serangoon Road, glowing under over 2 million LED lights across nearly 1.5 km, was simply magical — a radiant reminder of Singapore’s unity in diversity.

Our family’s Diwali preparations continued with buying a new Aakashkandil (Indian-style lantern) to light up our home, firecrackers for the celebrations, a couple of silk sarees from Nalli’s for the better half, and my favourite Diwali Faraal (Karanji, Shankarpaali, Chakli, Besan Ladoo, Rava Ladoo) — along with authentic sweets from Peshwai.

As I picked each sweet, it brought back childhood memories of my Aajji (grandmother) and Aai (mother) making these treats with so much love, filling the home with warmth, laughter, and the unmistakable aroma of festive joy. Those moments defined the spirit of Diwali — togetherness, care, and the joy of giving.

We wrapped up the day with the Bengali food my son was craving — because every generation finds its own way to celebrate, yet the essence remains the same: love, light, and shared happiness.

What truly made the day special were the small interactions — friendly smiles from shopkeepers, little conversations with strangers who didn’t feel like strangers, and that familiar warmth that makes every trip to Little India so heartening.

Heartfelt gratitude to the auxiliary police, and all the public officers and volunteers who managed the festive crowd and traffic so gracefully — ensuring everyone could celebrate and shop peacefully.

As 1.3 billion+ people around the world light their diyas this week, may we remember that Diwali is not just about lights, but about illuminating hearts with kindness, gratitude, and hope.
