2.	Created end-to-end customer journey maps:  Produced end-to-end customer journey maps for a variety of clients (cross-industry), mapping the key customer milestones/touchpoints and identifying recommendations/improvement areas.
3.	Conducted research on varying approaches to service delivery:  Carried out research on industry-leading approaches to knowledgebase management – resulting in a set of proposals for the client to consider in the development of their tool.

Oh, wait a minute…

I said I have a split personality.

Well, that’s right. It’s split because I work full-time for UK’s national health service too - working in a senior, non-clinical, role where I use the stories I’ve collected over the years to help others along the way.

But that’s a story for another day.

In 2023 I was President of the Chartered Institute of Housing in the UK. 

My mission in life is to help, in whatever way, the most needy to have homes to be comfortable in. I was homeless in my early twenties and I will always remember how happy I was when I was eventually given keys to my own council flat. I believe strongly in the role of "social housing"​ and that as a society, we have the resources to eliminate homelessness.

2 taxi drivers of Nigerian descent have been awarded £278k after a tribunal decided they were unfairly dismissed and subjected to race discrimination. The tribunal found that their employer, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council allowed racial prejudice to shape its view of them. They also ignored the racist abuse both drivers faced from customers and fellow cab drivers. 

Curious to know what (if anything) BDBC have learnt from this experience. 

It is a shame that stories like this are neither unique nor unusual. We appear to have an issue with endemic racism within our workplaces. Victims are ignored and not treated equitably. They're then described as "aggressive" when trying to get redress. 😢 

Can you believe the lady sorting out his licence renewal sent his passport to the Home Office but didn't do the same with other renewal applications!!!!

I wonder how many of my black and brown colleagues in housing associations, local authorities and social housing consultancies have had experiences similar to those faced by Olumade and Akinleye?

The answer is 'too many'.

I have just recently come across the @Together Alliance. It has gathered an impressive list of celebrity voices and public endorsements. Famous names are standing up and speaking out against racism and discrimination. Beyond the photographs and quotes the Alliance aims to challenge prejudice, promote fairness and build a society where everyone belongs.

It is enhancing the voice of those of use who are saying "We are black and we are here to stay. We've paid and contributed and we are going nowhere". 

The encouraging part is that this movement is not only for well known people. Ordinary citizens, community groups and everyday professionals can join too.

There are too many things about this story that have me totally gobsmacked!!!   🤔   😲    🤦🏾 

" Neville Watson, from north London, the son of Jamaican, Windrush-generation parents, told the The Guardian he had not experienced any racism in Reform, where there were “a lot of good people”. However, he was alarmed by the growing influence of Christian nationalism, the hard-right movement that blends politics with fundamentalism.

He added that he was dismayed by rising levels of Islamophobia, feared some people within the party were “sympathetic” to the far-right activist Tommy Robinson, and was concerned British politics was “losing its compassion” as parties vied to compete with Reform UK. "

I'm waiting for my professional bodies Chartered Institute of Housing and National Housing Federation to take a leaf out of the Church of England's book. 

Tenants are living in fear of being harassed and assaulted. #ukhousing staff are working in fear of being abused and threatened. There is so much conversation about "professionalism", "code of conducts" "competency" etc. But the provision of housing services does not happen in a vacuum. 

What happens on the streets affects us all, one way or the other. Keeping silent implies approval. Keeping silent is not a neutral act. When people are being attacked, abused and threatened, good people have to take a side and make a stance. 

So what say ye Chartered Institute of Housing?

True faith doesn't harbour hate.

The Church of England is launching a poster campaign aimed at challenging the anti-migrant message of Tommy Robinson ( Stephen Yaxley Lennon), whose “Unite the Kingdom” movement has urged its supporters to join a carols event next weekend to “put the Christ back into Christmas”.

The posters, which will go on display at bus stops, say “Christ has always been in Christmas” and “Outsiders welcome”. They will also be available for local churches to download and display over the festive period.

The C of E’s decision to challenge Robinson’s fascism comes amid growing unease among church leaders about the rise of Christian nationalism and the appropriation of Christian symbols to bolster the views of his supporters.

The Rev Arun Arora, bishop of Kirkstall and co-lead bishop on racial justice for the C of E, said: 

“We must confront and resist the capture of Christian language and symbols by populist forces seeking to exploit the faith for their own political ends.”

He said that Robinson’s conversion to Christianity in prison was welcome but did not give him “the right to subvert the faith so that it serves his purposes rather than the other way round”.

A church that failed to act in response would be diminished, Arora added.

To see the Church of England pushing back against this co-opting of the Christian faith by fascists like Robinson is welcome and shows the sort of leadership we desperately need in this country.

Fascists and extremists have always co-opted our faiths in the pursuit and justification of their own hatred, it's a successful strategy and one we need to push against together.

I really like this quote from Rev Arora which gently points out the hypocrisy and racism poisoning our public debate at the moment:

“As we approach Christmas and recall the Holy Family’s own flight as refugees, we reaffirm our commitment to stand alongside others in working for an asylum system that is fair, compassionate, and rooted in the dignity of being human.”

The dignity of being human.
That's the present I'd like to gift everyone.

Racism, bullying and xenophobia is being normalised daily. On social media, in mainstream media and in workplaces.  Our leaders are "not getting involved" which for me means they don't disagree. 

I am very worried to see how far the Far Right have to push before the government stands up for its Black and Brown citizens. Or is the truth that they also wish we weren't here?
