It was a full circle moment after she’s written countless recommendation letters for me as my dissertation advisor that I finally got to write her a letter of support for this award. 

She has been a role model for finding and using one’s voice for good, in both research papers and major media.

She also actively empowered me to advocate for myself and negotiate better compensation that reflected my

I said I’d never teach again after I was a TA for intro macroeconomics (at 8am)…

Never say never! 

Yesterday I taught AI transformation to a group of fantastic MBA students and had so much fun.

We talked about how to set up AI pilots for success, what metrics to capture at the beginning of the pilot, how to show effectiveness to support the go/no-go decision.  

We also discussed the importance of trust and transparency in AI adoption within organizations.

And yes of course we covered the spicy topic of AI companions…

Productivity is down today for many. 

...because Anthropic’s Claude is experiencing an outage after record downloads this past weekend. 

We spend hours debating how to measure ROI on AI: 
- How many minutes saved. 
- How many prompts written. 
- How much efficiency gained...  

Here’s a new metric you may not have on your AI dashboard: 
What is your productivity LOSS when your primary LLM goes dark?
 
If today feels chaotic and strangely manual, you just got a real-time stress test of your AI strategy.  

If your workflows, thinking patterns, documentation, coding, drafting, analysis, and decision support are concentrated in one LLM, you have a huge concentration risk.

Model quality of course matters but what about operational resilience? 
In finance and investment, we call this diversification. 
In AI strategy, why does it seem... optional? 
It should not be.

My workshops always require participants to leverage multiple LLMs and it's by design.  

Instead of arguing abstract productivity gains, use today to gather data: 
- What stopped? 
- What slowed? 
- What could continue? 
- Who was blocked?

Yesterday’s HBR: AI adoption is social. 

TL; DR:
- Employees deepen their use when they see PEERS applying tools in concrete, job relevant ways. 

- When learning remains invisible, experimentation stalls.

- However, peer influence does not operate in a vacuum. In large enterprises, effective senior leaders make AI part of operational rhythm. 

- When a leader dedicates 10 minutes in recurring meetings to a business relevant AI use case, it signals that this is CORE work. 

- When leaders openly share both a win and a FAILURE, they normalize experimentation required for adoption. 

I’d add a note from my past 2 years leading GenAI Enablement inside F500:

Measurement is the structural backbone that doesn’t get enough attention. 

If adoption data is confined to C level dashboards or centralized AI teams, managers cannot diagnose adoption issues and course correct. 

If you are driving AI adoption in your organization, here are 3 actions to consider as a leader:

1) Embed AI visibility into operating cadence through structured demos tied to measurable business outcomes.

2) Model balanced narratives of success and failure to reinforce psychological safety and accountability.

3) Provide transparent and relevant metrics to managers so they can own adoption and impact within their teams.

“Productivity Gains — How Boards Are Paying Execs to Ramp Up AI”

I shared my thoughts on the topic in this timely article about how execs should be compensated for AI efforts (link in comments) 

Did you know Ralph Lauren, has set scorecard metrics for its 2026 short-term incentive plan, “with KPIs tied to critical business priorities that focus our
executives on AI literacy and enablement”?

TL; DR:
1. Broadly, corporate directors need to do more on the workforce side of the AI
equation.

"This is a complete transformation with existential talent implications” 

2. Directors should oversee 3 areas pertaining to TRUST on AI use at companies.

The first area is whether employees trust leadership to be honest about the future job impact of AI, and the second area is whether enterprise AI tools genuinely help real work or add friction, wrote Huang. 

The third area is whether AI-assisted work is evaluated fairly or is quietly penalized, she added.

“Miss any one of these, and you get stalled AI adoption, wasted AI investment and talent loss,” Huang cautioned.

3. Measure what matters. Tying AI to executive compensation
signals what the board truly believes is
material to the company's future; the
risk is that companies are moving superficially, according to Serena Huang, an AI consultant and author of Inclusion Equation: Leveraging Data & AI for Organizational Diversity & Wellbeing.

The easiest AI metrics to measure are usage metrics, such as those that measure how many hours people spend in AI tools, how many prompts are run, or how many licenses are activated, wrote Huang. "Those numbers are clean and easy to track.”

They may even look good in a proxy statement but they are surface level metrics, she added.

AI metrics should be tied to clearly defined business levers, with baseline
performance established BEFORE incentives are set, Huang urged.

This is not purely an AI story. It is a pandemic overhiring story colliding with AI as an accelerant and a convenient narrative.

Leaders under pressure to innovate and cut cost need to resist the temptation to simplify this moment. Markets may reward efficiency headlines in the short term. Employees, customers, and future talent are watching for something deeper. They are watching how you lead through change.

If you are considering workforce reductions tied to AI, start with honesty. 

1. Be very clear about what actually changed. Did demand shift. Did strategy evolve. Did you overhire. Did automation truly redesign workflows. 

Precision builds credibility. 
Vague references to AI erode trust.

2. Distinguish cost cutting from transformation. Cutting roles without redesigning work is not innovation. It is contraction. 

True transformation requires rethinking processes, decision rights, skills, and incentives. 

3. Invest visibly in your remaining workforce. Upskilling cannot be a slide in a board deck!

It needs budget, time, and executive sponsorship. 
Managers need guidance on how roles evolve. 
Employees need clarity on what skills will matter and how to build them. 

Anxiety thrives in SILENCE.

4. Measure what you claim to value. If you say AI drives productivity, define productivity in terms of outcomes, quality, and customer impact. 

Do not rely on usage metrics or headcount ratios alone. Investors respect disciplined metrics. Employees respect FAIRNESS.

5. communicate internally before celebrating externally. 

A stock bump is temporary. 

The way you handle this moment shapes your culture for years.

AI can enable leaner organizations. It can also enable smarter, more human centered ones. 

The difference is leadership intention.
