I've sat on the boards of more than 25 venture-backed enterprise tech firms since 2008 in various countries (Singapore, India, Australia, and the US), and stages (from pre-revenue startups to 2000+ employee firms)

I've seen the worst side of the economy during the depths of the financial crisis at 28 which was when my career in venture began. My worldview and opinions are also fuelled by previous roles in consulting, research and large-cap investments.

I have lived in and experienced different cultures across Singapore, India, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the US over the years.

Fun fact: I'm also a competitive cyclist 🚴‍♀️ (Singapore gold medal winner at the 2018 Asian Cycling Championships)

Last weekend was simple.

My husband surprised me with flowers, we went to our fave lil Italian spot in Aurora, and the dogs got groomed!! 😍 

Nothing truly big, just time together.

But it reminded me of something I don’t talk about enough.

Behind every founder or operator that looks “busy” online… there’s usually someone holding things down quietly.

Mike does that for me, he handles the dogs when I’m traveling.
Makes sure I eat when I forget, reminds me to log off. Lets me go all in when work gets intense.

It’s easy to make my LinkedIn all about growth numbers and case studies.
But the reason I can show up fully for my team and clients is because I have stability at home.

The flowers were beautiful, dinner was lovely, and the freshly groomed dogs were very proud of themselves (we were proud of them too) 🤪 

But the real gift is support! And that’s something I'll never take for granted 🤍

This time of year always makes me think about the women in my family.

Especially my mom.

She came to Canada when she was really young (7 years old!) and didn’t speak a word of English. There wasn’t some big plan for how everything would work out. She honestly just figured things out as she went.

Somewhere along the way, she built a life here while raising my sister and me on her own. 

But what stuck with me the most growing up wasn’t just how hard she worked (although that’s definitely etched into my brain too).

It’s that she always made sure we knew we had a voice.

She encouraged us to speak up, share our opinions, and never make ourselves small for anyone.

And my grandma was right there beside her through all of it. Even after my grandpa passed away a few years ago, she just kept showing up for our family the same way she always has.

I grew up surrounded by strong women, women who were all there at my wedding last year which meant everything to me🥺

It’s something bigger than my own success that I feel really proud of: where I come from and the women who shaped me.

There’s this unspoken stigma in the agency world that we’re all supposed to compete with each other.

That every other agency is “the enemy.”
I don’t see it that way.

Sheila & I had a really great brainstorming session this week with the team at This Way Up

Nothing fancy, just a genuine conversation about what they’re seeing on the lead gen side and what we’re seeing across Amazon accounts.

And honestly, that’s how it should be. There’s always room for collaboration in this space, there’s always room for agencies to learn from each other.

Especially when the end goal is the same! We all want to help brands grow.

I’ve always believed that strong operators don’t feel threatened by other strong operators
