In Jan. 2020 I renamed my podcast formerly known as Selling with Social to The Modern Selling Podcast.  

Why the change?

Simple.  Ever since the beginning I included topics centered around #Sales, #SocialSelling, #DigitalSelling and #SocialMedia for sales and sales leaders.  As I grew the fan base and followers it transformed into topics ranging from sales motivation, prospecting, managing growth, scaling, closing and many more.  So in 2020 it was relaunched to better connect with all of you, my fans.

My vision was to produce a podcast that was dedicated to sales, sales leaders and sales enablement members.  I never would have imagined that it would become an amazing hit!

I spent 106 consecutive quarters in B2B Sales, Marketing & Leadership roles growing hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue annually and now I have the privilege of motivating sales teams to engage in the Omni-Channel approach to prospecting and buyer engagement.

The National Association of Women Sales Professionals (NAWSP) was founded in 2016, by my friend, Cynthia Barnes in Metro Detroit. The goal was to create a national organization that could provide women in sales with professional development, training, support, and access to opportunities so that they could reach the Top 1% and Dance on the Glass Ceiling™ Since its inception, the organization has experienced explosive growth, growing to over 14,000 paid members in 30 months.  

Anyone who knows me knows that forming a company and having its team be diversified has been a #1 priority of mine since developing the strategic plan to form Vengreso.  In fact, out of the 39 partners, employees and contractors that we support, there are 22 female Vengresonians!  That equals 56% of our staff. Two words started it all in 2017:
1. Ventas = Sales 
2. Ingresos = Revenue

We had two goals: increase sales and revenue for teams and companies, and thus we became Vengreso.

After making my way into the 100% Club 15 of 18 years in corporate, I started my first company in 2015. 15-months later, I did a 7-way merger and formed Vengreso. We became the world's largest digital sales prospecting training company by 2022.

On Dec. 2020 we gave birth to a new SaaS product called FlyMSG a text expander and personal writing assistant. It was specifically designed to support our sales training programs to help sellers save prospecting time and increase productivity. And, it worked. It worked very well. 

Fast-forward one year later, and I woke up to an alert that a pharmacy had onboarded all of its digital pharmacists to FlyMSG. I then asked how many users we had on the "freemium" service. To my surprise, even though we onboarded only a few hundred users via our sales training programs, we actually had 2,000 users, with 65% being non-sellers!!! 

That is when we knew we had a burgeoning SaaS-based PLG company on our hands. Overnight we went from supporting Sales to supporting every vertical and use case you could possibly think of. 

I wish I could say we were smart enough to have forecast a horizontal application of FlyMSG, we weren't. But, we were in fact smart enough to see the trend!

That trend was further recognized in March 2022 when we were notified that we won one of the most prestigious awards in business you can achieve - a Gold 🥇Stevie Award for FlyMSG Innovation.

Eleven hours, one ferry, two airports, and zero regrets.

Left in the rental car at 8:15 to catch the ferry and then drive to the Vancouver BC airport. 

You’re thinking, Alice it’s not that far from Vancouver to Reno. You almost could have driven quicker (not quite).

✈️ Right, you are, if only the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority could get an airline to fly from Reno to Vancouver nonstop. 

Between driving, delays and waiting at airports we finally made it home at 7:30 pm. Eleven hours. 😩 I could have been in Europe by then! 

But was it worth it?

Absolutely! I was in my genius zone in the entire time I was in Vancouver.

I was so energized by visiting my terrific clients, Aarcomm Systems Inc, Skillsetter and ThoughtFarmer and working with the members of Acetech and their Founder Growth Group. 

Lots of structured networking and great discussions on lead generation and sales. 

The biggest takeaways . . .

🎉Cold calling works really well in a few industries, but the rest, just forget it.

🎉Cold email is not working. So just stop it. There are so many other ways to reach the people you need to meet. (Unless you plan to write the emails one by one with subject lines that mean something to the recipient and a message that they will be eager to respond to. Can AI help some might try.)

🤷🏽‍♀️ So, what to do along with or instead of cold outreach by phone and email and LinkedIn that will work, you ask?

💡My first suggestion is to read How to Get a Meeting with Anyone by Stu Heinecke. 

Here are some others. 

✉️ Send something in the mail. Be very thoughtful about what you send. It could be a handwritten note or a great book. Or something that only that person would appreciate.

🥳 Hold your own event (or with a partner) and invite exactly the people you want to be there. Bring them tremendous value and fun. The bonus is they get to network and meet each other also.

🎪Attend the right trade shows and conferences. Prepare!!! What you do before during an after matters greatly.

🗣️ Speak! You, or someone at your company should speak at events, conferences, trade shows and on webinars, panels and podcast in front of your target audience.

🤝 Ask for introductions. Use a process to strategically ask for introductions from your delighted customers to their colleagues, partners, vendors, customers or others they know that you need to know.

👥 Prompt, word-of-mouth referrals. think about what you can do to get your customers to talk about you to others who can buy.

If you don’t wanna give up sending thousands of emails that no one will reply to, keep doing it, but while you’re doing it, please try some of these other things that actually work. 

In my opinion, stop the volume and start being highly targeted and know that quality over quantity will win.

Hey Alice, I came across your profile and thought it’d be great to connect. I always enjoy building connections and sharing ideas with like-minded people!

I had 3 of those in a row. Ok, there weren't exactly the same but almost and there was one with no message in between. I wish I would have screenshotted it. 

Since LinkedIn is now limiting how many people you can send a message to with your connection request, why would you waste those by saying what everyone else says?

Nothing unique, nothing engaging, nothing to #smykm (don't you follow Samantha McKenna and the #samsales Consulting#samsales Consulting#samsales Consulting team?)

I just got through 500 connection requests (yes, I was a bit behind and promise myself to keep up better). It took me over a week. It was painful. Some were easy deletes but I still had to click each one and look at their profile. 

The rest I had to figure out if they could be a beneficial addition to my network. 

Why? Because people don't send a message saying why they want to connect and I found out that LinkedIn doesn't let them. So, I had to research each one.

Some I talk to say, "just connect with everyone." I disagree for many reasons, but right now I have to be super-picky because I'm close to 30K connections and LinkedIn is going to cut me off. 

Yes, I can go in and delete some connections to make room, and I did and almost got my account shut down because it thought I was automating because I deleted 50 at a time. 

All this to say, I do want to connect with people, but I also want to build a strong, leverageable network. Don't you?

If you get to send a message with your connection request, be thoughtful. You are starting a relationship that hopefully will lead to good things. Get off on the right foot! 

Take 1 - 3 minutes to review my profile and read a post or two so you can say that you enjoy my podcast or agree with a strong sentiment I expressed. 

But be genuine or don't connect. What's the point?

A connection that doesn't know you is not going to help you. They aren't going to make an introduction and they aren't going to buy from you. 

You have to build trust. 

And, if I do accept your request that comes with no message, I will research you. Comment on a post and I will then send you a message asking you what inspired you to connect. 

Take a minute and be thoughtful, you are starting a relationship or prompting me to remove you, even though I just accepted. 

I know many of you have different opinions about connecting and I'm happy to hear them in the comments and maybe I'll learn something.

#Ranting about SDRs with Ryan Reisert today was so much fun.

VC says, here $$$ go hire 20 SDRs so you can penetrate the market quickly. 

I say, based on what? 

Ryan says, you have to do the sales math. 

Have you not noticed that the average SDR can no longer book 1 appointment a week?

This is an old playbook and it is not working.

Not to mention the CAC 🤮 seriously. 

I can't wait to publish this episode of Sales Talk for CEOs.

Seriously, I hate it when I can't remember who I promised something to. 

I'll be in a conversation with someone and tell them I'm going to share something and if I don't write it down, 😣 . . . 

A day later I will remember what I was supposed to send but not who I promised it to. 

I was recently talking to someone or a group about gifting during the sales process or once a deal closes. 

I mentioned several appropriate ways to do this, including sending a great book or a cup of coffee. 

I was supposed to share my sources for sending those and other gifts. 

If it was you, please tell me and I will share. 

If fact, why don't I just write a post on it? 

That's what I'll do, and hope the person/people I promised it to will see it.

If I ever do that to you, please remind me. I really don't mind.
