If you’re new here, welcome! If you’ve been around a while, thank you 1,085,941 times. In honour of this momentous development, here are 13 things to know about how I think, work, and show up.

(1) I read the end of mystery novels first. I do. Why is this the first thing you should know about me? I'm not entirely sure, but for some of you, it's a deal-breaker, so you all have a right to know sooner rather than later.

(2) I run The Practice Lab with my husband, Evan Shuster, who was featured in a candy cane ice cream commercial that aired over the holidays because he leads a ridiculous life (link in the comments, it's genuinely funny). We also have the privilege of parenting two wonderful little people.

(3) I am a former practicing corporate and securities lawyer, a registered psychotherapist, and 6 years ago, I launched the mental health training and education company, which has become The Practice Lab (serving 70+ new and repeat corporate clients annually).

(4) My very niche-specific jam is peak performance and early childhood development: how our experiences growing up impact how we strive as adults.

(5) I struggle with anxiety myself, the somatic kind more than the cognitive worry. I remember telling my best friend, decades ago, that I was "very laid back," and her laughing in my face... I prize honest feedback.

(6) I am a dog person.

(7) I am 41.5. I don't dye my hair, and I haven't tried Botox. I am not opposed, I just think it's not for me.

(8) My posts often have typos, and it's something I am torn about. Having grown up pre-AI everywhere, I think they read as sloppy. Now though, they signal that I am a human trying to connect with other humans. Even if I did knuckle down on them, my strength is big ideas, so I am not sure I'd catch even the majority of them.

(9) I am currently eagerly waiting a couple new releases that are sure to mix-up how I teach and think about human performance, to name only a few: Brad Stulberg's The Way of Excellence, Simone Stolzoff's How Not to Know, Amir Levine, Ph.D, LCSW-R's Secure, David Epstein's Inside the Box, Suzan Song, MD, MPH, PhD's Why we Suffer and How we Heal, and Ibram X. Kendi's Chain of Ideas. 

(10) I believe strongly that people make sense, and that if you don't understand someone, you are missing a piece of their context.

(11) I love coffee. I do. (I drink decaf. Please don't come for me!)

(12) My family grounds me and inspires my ambition. 

(13) I send as few emails each day as possible. Hardly ever on a Monday, nearly never after 3:00 pm on a Friday. Forget over lunch, and nearly never before 10:30 am. It's about meaningful work over time, which means I can't be constantly working (and a giant trap that promotes constant work and deters peak performance = email).

Most high achievers I meet with are endlessly optimizing. A new planner, a new tool, a new 5 am habit (that they feel guilty for not doing it, but plan to start tomorrow).

Here's my (perhaps very bold and confronting) suggestion: if you actually want to level up, don't reach for your next productivity hack.

Start by reading therapy books.

Yes... therapy books. The thing is, you are the expert you need. Yes, you. You know your strengths, preferences, context, and history better than anyone. 

You know what works for you; you just might need to know why it's not working right now. 

So, here are four (therapy) books I recommend to every high performer looking for a breakthrough:

1. Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents by Lindsay C. Gibson

Ever feel like you have no choice (or only impossible ones)? Are you responsible for everything and everyone? Can't ask for help? Gibson deftly identifies developmental experiences that are often not articulated and shows how they shape how you handle pressure, navigate power and relationships, receive feedback, and seek success.

2. Anchored by Deb Dana

If you are used to powering through, this one will stop you in your tracks. Dana offers a reality check: your body can't be tricked into peak performance forever. She shows how working with your nervous system, not against it, is the difference between feeling satisfied and feeling hollow at the end of high performing days.

3. Own Your Greatness by Dr. Lisa Orbe-Austin and Dr. Richard Orbe-Austin

If you are ready to feel, in your bones, like you are enough, this one is for you. Addressing insecurity from your earliest days with actionable exercises, prompts, reflections, and strategies, this workbook provides a clear path towards optimal (which means also sustainable) performance.

4. Radical Acceptance by Tara Brach

What if caring deeply and letting go weren't opposites? This was the book that helped me see that high performance happens when you can show up with compassion, for yourself and others. It's not about being tough and controlling everything; it's about being human and trusting you can figure out the rest.

Most professionals I meet chase new skills and bigger goals using external standards, systems, products and metrics. Few address the invisible wiring driving their choices. It's not glamorous, it does lead to growth though. 

And also, how lovely is that? It turns out that you are the expert you need most.

What would happen if you trusted yourself more than the latest productivity trend? Tag a high performer who needs this reminder.

You know you're onto something big and important when:

(1) Days before you have excited anticipation...
(2) Hours before you eagerly count down the minutes...

And (3) When it's go time you: start cleaning, exercising, scroll LinkedIn, make a nice meal, send those emails you've avoided sending for weeks, rehydrate, go for a walk because the nice meal is not sitting well and it's important to feel good while doing important things, and basically avoid it like it's the plague.

(This may or may not be me, right now, as I am posting this. If I continue on the path of distancing myself from my dreams, I have a lovely, warm shower planned. If I can be gentle and find courage, I have a blank Word document that needs opening and my attention. Yes, the shower does seem to be weighing down the scale...)

When we push ourselves to grow, our bodies respond in ways they learned would keep us safe. Sometimes that means we distance ourselves, we avoid, procrastinate, ignore, set aside and excuse ourselves from the effort. It's meant to be protective (what if we suck?! We'll never know), but oftentimes it moves us further away from ourselves - further away from what we are scared and desperate to create.

What do you do to support yourself, to be brave, when your dreams are so big that you notice they push your attention away from trying?

If you're in Toronto and finding yourself unreasonably overwhelmed about navigating your day amidst this blistery snow storm, be gentle on yourself.

It might be more than just a tough day. It could be unprocessed trauma from the early days of the COVDID-19 Pandemic.* 

Yes, I said trauma. If that sounds extreme - stay with me. 

It could be that this day was just important in its own right. It could be that the world is a lot right now, and this one more thing is just a thing too many. The question we need to ask is: do you have access to the resources you need to face today? If not, it's no wonder you feel overwhelmed.

But if you do have access to those resources and you still feel overwhelmed, chances are you're not really reacting to the snowstorm or whatever's happening today. You're reacting to the past.

Trauma isn't always about what's happening now. Sometimes it's about feeling powerless in the past, which our bodies remember - and remind us of, in the present. Whether it's a global pandemic keeping us home, or a single snow day, our bodies register our resources based on past experience. 

To get grounded, step back from the rush to manage or fix.

Give yourself permission to calibrate. That looks like a pause. Engage your senses: what do you see, smell, taste? Move your body,maybe through this crisp snow, feel it crunch beneath your feet.

Let your brain find perspective. Be gentle on yourself and those around you.

We're all carrying more than we sometimes realize.

The pursuit of excellence makes life rich.  The thing is: it's not glamorous.

It's sitting down to a blank page and starting... every day.

It's the sacrifice of short-term comfort.

The delay of satisfaction.

In a world that tells us now is better, faster is more valuable, productive is always doing, excellence is a radical idea. Brad Stulberg's exploration of the biology, psychology and philosophy of excellence has me gripped (linked in the comments). He speaks the language of aliveness, resonance, and connection while sharing research, data, stories... mindsets, habits, and practices. 

If you are looking to feel more like yourself again, if you feel stuck, or if you are wondering how to level up, this book is waiting to help.

ps - What's better than a great book during a snowstorm? (Also, I look like my Mom in this picture and how fun is that!)

The difference between stress and trauma is a sense of powerlessness, and hope is often the key ingredient that protects us from moving from the former experience into the latter.

It is one of the most underrated skills, and yes, that means you can learn and cultivate hope in your life. It's not something just happens to you.

Jen Fisher BEAUTIFULLY and accessibly (what a combo) talks about how in her latest book (linked in the comments). Practical, full of humanity, and resonant to the high-performing Striver parts of me, I can't recommend it enough... 

At this moment, where our social fabric is threading in new, unfamiliar and often scary patterns, Jen's work is the book I needed (and didn't know I needed - which is the best when it happens).

If you are looking for additional support in these challenging times, be sure to find a therapist who is political.

You read that right.

Therapy is inherently political. It involves the power dynamic between the therapist and client, and all of the intersections that come along with that relationship. It is the job of your therapist to honor your dignity AND to help dismantle the systems of thinking that perpetuate harm.

Let me be more specific: therapists have an ethical obligation to challenge beliefs and actions rooted in patriarchy, white supremacy, racism, ageism, ableism, heteronormativity, transphobia, homophobia and any structure of power that privileges one human over another. The challenge is not meant to shame, but to help you learn and unlearn and grow and become.

Find someone that calls you to heal with love and dignity, not someone who just tells you what you want to hear.

Here’s my quick list of things to check when I am feeling off...

... and don’t know how much time I have, I'm ambivalent about whether I want to do anything at all really, and I would like to be in a better mood, immediately please and thank you.

In our ever-productive, ever-striving culture, high-functioning folks are celebrated as successful, valuable, and worthy of status, wealth and influence. 

Low-functioning folks are derided, resented, and made to feel less than. 

It is our culture that imbues meaning and worth on these survival strategies, pathologizing the latter and celebrating the former.

The reality is, how we strive is essentially pancake: both sides have the same ingredients, they just look different based on when the ever precarious flip happens. 

High and low functioning both teach us to develop certain strengths and nurture certain liabilities in the name of experiencing relief from ever-present worry, insecurity, and constant self-doubt.

Just a stern faced reminder here: You are not better because you get things done. You are not worthless because you struggle. You are a human, who makes sense.

Mary Oliver explores the creative process and the internal struggle for focus like no other. 

In her essay, "Of Power and Time" (in Upstream: Selected Essays), she explains that we are composed of three distinct selves:

(1) The Child, described so vividly in her own terms:

"I am, myself, three selves at least. To begin with, there is the child I was. Certainly, I am not that child anymore! Yet, distantly, or sometimes not so distantly, I can hear that child’s voice - I can feel its hope, or its distress. It has not vanished. Powerful, egotistical, insinuating - its presence rises, in memory, or from the steamy rivers of dreams. It is not gone, not by a long shot. It is with me in the present hour. It will be with me in the grave."

(2) The Social Self: The "smiler and the doorkeeper" who handles appointments, bills, and social obligations.

(3) The Third Self: The "creative spirit" or "dreamer" that is out of love with time and hungry for eternity.... 

From big (and little Kara), let this be a reminder today that all the parts of you belong, that Mary Oliver really is the best, and that focus is a moving target.

If I am being honest, which I try to be as a matter of integrity always, it's not business as usual this week. Having lived in Minneapolis for some of the happiest years of my life, I'm heartbroken.

I believe that people make sense. 

In this moment, in this scary, ambiguous, deeply troubling historical moment, I am handling what's hard by doubling down on that belief. 

I am reaching harder into love.

What does that look like? 

Well, for starters, here are five things I say (instead of nothing, or "it'll be ok" - because we don't know that, and again, integrity):

(1) It makes sense you are feeling (insert feeling: scared, sad, nervous, concerned).

(2) (Just listen, really listen - sometimes a murmur or a nod here does the work of the phrase).

(3) Want us to problem solve together, or would it be more helpful if I focused on understanding what’s happening for you?

(4) I believe you.

(5) Can you say more? This is important. What you are experiencing is important.

As always, be gentle out there - with yourself and with each other.

Ambition in the age of overwhelm is about making choices that genuinely reflect what you care about. 

It’s tricky, immediately, because: 
(1) You care about lots of things; 
(2) You are limited; 
(3) Sometimes what you care about conflicts; 
(4) You exist in a context this is as complex as you are; and (this is where it gets gnarly)
(5) It can be difficult to know what is genuinely yours, and what exists inside of you (internalized) because you learned it was necessary to believe as a child. 

Whoosh, lots there.

Ambition in the age of overwhelm requires discernment and courage. The ability to separate the tissue paper thin differences between each of these layers, and put a stake into the ground about where you stand in all that complexity.

It's not longer about the biggest house, the fastest car, the corner office, the fancy title. 

It's about daydreaming while being a passenger princess, not needing to rush bedtime to log back into email, having energy when you wake up in the morning, seeing friends and not resenting having to leave the house - at least, for me, that's what ambition in the age of overwhelm is.

What is it for you?

The “freeze response” is often misunderstood (and inaccurately explained, including by me in earlier years of my training)!

The body is genius and constantly scans the world (and your insides!) to determine what resources are needed to rise to your context. Sometimes, things are stressful, so your body mobilizes by surging you with energy (to fight or flee). Freeze is often grouped with these purely mobilization responses.

It’s not though. 

A freeze response occurs when demands exceed resources. When you are powerless and require a different strategy (because mobilizing optimally not only fails to keep you safe but also causes you further harm, by continuing to marshall resources in ways that are not sufficient).  

The freeze response mobilizes but also stops. It distances you, often psychologically. It’s a bridge, potentially, to "shutting down". While the body is mobilizing, it is also trying to hit (in the words of Dr. Aimie Apigian) “an emergency brake.” It's trying to say, "this is too much" as you do it, and while determining what happens next.

This explains how we continue to get things done, to push through, to keep going, even while feeling totally wired, panicked, drowning and done. Our bodies are brilliantly responding, trying to both keep going and protect us from the pain of pushing.

As adults, our identities tend to narrow in and around us.

With precious little time, we prioritize what we can, what matters: our family, our ambitions and our dreams. Sometimes also, our friends.

The challenge is that what feels aligned, overtime, becomes suffocating. Foreclosing possibilities and potential around us. 

The snow day reminds me: there is always a choice. Even if it has you thigh high in the cold. Overtime, those fresh steps clear another path, another identity and your multidimensionality. Overtime, those big, hard steps, become easy. Restoring freedom.

What would a step into the deep snow look like for you today? How can you support the expansion of yourself?

Parenting and managing: the venn diagram of overlapping skills is noteworthy.

In particular, after a decade of working with high-performing leaders, I know that how we were parented as children impacts not only how we parent our kids, but also how we manage and relate to other adults.

In developing our leadership capacities, we aren't paying enough attention to how we were taught to relate to ourselves and others in our earliest years of life.

To put it more sharply, the parallels between the parenting styles identified by Lindsay C. Gibson (Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents, Chapter 4) and dysfunctional managerial styles are striking. I'm not assuming any causality here, just noticing and wondering: 

What do you make of the connection between parenting and managing? Both in your own experiences growing up, and in how you parent and manage today?

Going out for dinner with friends sounds simple, right?

I mean, minus the scheduling and related last-minute "this came up" complications... and the reality that it's also repulsive to consider leaving your home once you have finally arrived there on the day dinner out is scheduled.

Here's my theory: more than ever before, people spend their days being "on." 

We are "on" our devices, "on" in meetings, "on" as we pay attention to the news. Even as we binge on Netflix or scroll through algorithmic feeds, seemingly passive acts, our brains are actively processing overstimulating visuals and sounds.

These always-"on" interactions are inherently frenetic and shallow. They are larely performative, inauthentic, and inhuman. We are in near constant contact with one another. Rarely, if ever though, are we connecting.

In our current headspace and context, connection feels overwhelming, annoying, uninteresting and like it's too much (how long will the conversation last if I answer this incoming call?). However, the research is clear: even with strangers, connection fills our social batteries. 

The reality is, the way we are engaging is the problem. Constant contact is draining. The thing we avoid, genuine connection, is the antidote.
