Your job is not to avoid them, but to handle them and handle them well.
 
By their nature, they feel uncomfortable for you and for the other person, but dodging them only keeps teams stuck, including the leader (you).
 
What if you stopped labelling every tough exchange as “difficult”? 
 
What if you treated it as a curious conversation?
A courageous conversation?
A discovery conversation?
 
Each time you lean in rather than pull away, you build resilience. Proving to yourself that you can do it, and showing the other person you respect their humanness by working with them instead of against them.
 
The tension might still be there; however, the outcome shifts from confrontation to movement. From fraughtness to solutions.
 
No, these conversations do not become instantly easy, and, for you, maybe they never will. 
 
But you know what? 
You become stronger.
You become more resilient. 
You become more adept at having these conversations. 
You become a better leader.

You need to give yourself validation, because you may have leaders above you who will never give it to you.
 
That's about them, not you. 
 
I hear people in leadership say, "Oh, well, I never experienced that," or "I didn't get that"
 
As a leader, just because you didn't have that particular experience or get the response you wanted, that shouldn't stop you from advocating for your team.
 
Why make somebody else's life hard just because yours was?
 
For those of you who want validation or need recognition, ask for it. 
It isn't always going to come the way you want it to or from the people you may expect to give it. 
 
Ask questions like:
Can you tell me where what I'm doing is really working? 
Where do I need development? 
What's notable, what stands out for you about me? 
Can you walk me through what I'm doing really well? 
What are my areas for development? 
What would you like to see more of from me? 
How are these related to my progression? 
 
Check the responses, don't zoom in on the one negative thing and ignore all the good stuff. Take some time to bask in the good stuff, then take the area of development, ask yourself if it resonates with you, and put some things in place to work on it.
 
What good stuff about your leadership can you give yourself some validation for?

If your team isn’t following you, it’s not their fault. 
It’s yours.
 
People can’t follow what they don’t understand. 
 
Every second, our brain is hit with millions of pieces of information, but it can only process about fifty. That means most of what you think is obvious… isn’t.
 
Stop hiding behind jargon, watering down your words and stop softening everything with “maybe” and “I think”.
 
Get clear. 
Say what you mean. 
Mean what you say.
 
Clarity builds trust and makes you easier to follow. It's what separates leaders people believe in from managers who drain the room.
 
If you want loyalty and impact, start with this: be clear
 
...or be ignored.

So many women tell me:
 “I know what to do… I just can’t seem to get it done, I've so many competing priorities, and I don't seem to be one of them.”

Here’s the truth I see over and over again:
We're missing out on development because we don't want to do it alone. 
Women don’t just learn from content.
We learn from connection.

We learn faster when:
* We’re in a room with women who get it
* We can say the scary thing out loud and not be judged
* Someone else has already walked the path we’re about to take
* We’re held accountable with love, not pressure

When women come together with intention, something powerful happens
 Confidence rises.
 Clarity sharpens.
 Action feels lighter.

And by the way, it’s not just a “nice idea” the data backs it up

When Fear is In The Driving Seat and You Ask It To Leave

In recent years, imposter syndrome has had really good PR. It's often our first port of call when we want to talk about how we feel or how we're performing.
 
That doubt, fear, second guessing, that's not your identity. 
It's a temporary feeling.
 
You're not an impostor. 
 
Sometimes the environment may make you feel like one, or you choose to wear that label. But if you're experienced, capable and powerful, then you're not.
 
The real work comes from the conversations you have with yourself and then the conversations you have with others. 
 
You're constantly telling yourself what your identity is - so what are you telling yourself? Is it good or is it bad? 
 
The same effort you put into telling yourself you're an imposter is the same effort you can put into saying you're worthy of being in the room, that you're powerful, capable and experienced.
