My comment on Sarah Suzuki Harvard's post yesterday got 40,000 impressions. Her post (as usual) was funny and thought-provoking.

I've been writing professionally for years. Drafting, editing, rewriting. Caring about sentences. ( 😲 )

And now that's apparently suspicious.

But the people doing the accusing have never written anything. Not a blog post, a newsletter, not even a decent email. (SHRIEK, I USED THE RULE OF THREE!)

CEOs who've never published a word are suddenly experts on what "real writing" looks like. Recruiters who couldn't tell you the difference between a comma and a semicolon are calling out "AI content."

I get it. AI-generated content is genuinely bad (some of it). But you didn't care about writing 3 years ago. You didn't practice it. But now you can spot the difference between human and machine?

Nah. You just learned a new way to dismiss people and fish for likes (hot take!).

The GOOD writers I know aren't worried about being called out. They're too busy doing the work. Experimenting, getting better, using every tool available to them.

Writing has always been hard — that's why most people avoided it. (EM DASH DEMON!). The least they can do is not punish the ones who didn't.

I'm back from my holiday. Yay.

I left 27-degree heat, sun all day, the beach, and spending the day going from building sandcastles to watching my kids do "really cool trick jumps" in the pool and eating my weight in baklava.

I miss the smell of the ocean. Watching the ripples and the waves hit my feet in the sand. The feel of salt on my skin and in my hair. The heat from the sun.

But most of all, I miss reading a book and hearing my kids' joy as they barrelled down the slide, "one more time!"

I love my work and the life we've built. But I struggle with setting boundaries. I find it hard to shut my laptop and stop thinking about work.

It's also hard to transition back to "normal life" — cooking, cleaning, school runs, and the daily grind.

But before you harass me for sounding ungrateful — I'm not. I know in my heart how blessed I am. I appreciate the heck out of everything I have. My health, my wife, my children, a roof over my head, and a life we created.

I just think I was born to live in a hot country by the ocean. I think I'll create/make that the next chapter of my life.
