The United Kingdom is now at its highest unemployment rate in five years.
According to BBC News, the numbers are climbing.

But the headline isn’t the story.

There are three structural forces driving this, and none of them are temporary.

1. The explosion of AI adoption

In the last 12–18 months, AI has moved from experimental to operational.
Admin roles. Back-office processing. Repetitive tasks.
Companies are realising they don’t need as many people, they need fewer, better people equipped with AI.

The productivity gap between “average” and “AI-enabled” talent is widening fast.

2. The rising cost of employing young people

Recent policy changes under the Labour Party government, higher minimum wage and increased National Insurance, have materially raised the cost of hiring.
Taking on a young person, typically aged 18–24, is now more expensive than it has ever been.

That’s a significant risk for someone who also requires training, management time, and development.

So businesses do what businesses always do:
They adapt.
And right now, that means hesitating to hire.

3. The acceleration of global outsourcing Digital infrastructure has removed borders.
VPNs. Global broadband. Cloud systems.
The UK is primarily a service-based economy, which makes intellectual and operational work easier to move overseas.

Lower regulation. Lower tax. Lower overheads.

When you combine:

Smarter AI
Higher domestic employment costs
Easier global outsourcing
You shouldn’t be surprised when unemployment rises.

Only one of those three levers is within government control.
The other two are structural shifts in the global economy.

If we want different outcomes, we have to design policy for the world as it actually is, not the one we used to operate in.

If it meant giving up control?

A £1m earn-out sounds attractive.

But are you prepared to report in, lose authority, and be measured purely on targets after 20 years of calling the shots?

Exit strategy isn’t just financial.
It’s psychological.

Hustle will get you to £1m. It won’t get you to £5m. 🚀

Most founders can grind their way to a million through sales and lead gen.

But the jump from £1m to £3m…
Or £3m to £5m…

That’s a completely different game.

Different strategy.
Different levers.
Different level of leadership.

At that stage it’s no longer about just “more sales”.
It becomes:

✅ Team
✅ Systems
✅ Infrastructure
✅ Founder evolution

If you try to hustle harder instead of building properly, you don’t scale… you stall.
Or worse, you burn out.

Scale isn’t about doing more.
It’s about building better.

Really sad to see what’s happened with BrewDog this week.

Hundreds of jobs lost.
Investors wiped out.

A business that was once valued in the hundreds of millions sold out of administration for £33m.


Firstly, that’s tough. For staff. For investors. For everyone involved.
And just to be clear, I’m a fan of what they built. What they achieved was extraordinary.

But there are lessons here for every founder scaling a business.

Three stand out.
1️⃣ Growth at all costs is dangerous.
Diversification doesn’t always equal growth.
Quite often, it equals distraction.
More markets.
More products.
More complexity.
Scale without strategic caution can quietly introduce risk faster than revenue.

2️⃣ Expanding too fast can break infrastructure.
Going big, going global, moving quickly into multiple territories sounds bold.
But speed amplifies weakness.
If the systems, leadership depth, cash discipline and governance aren’t mature enough, expansion becomes exposure.
Sometimes the most valuable person in the room is the one who says:
“Slow down. We’re not ready.”

3️⃣ Value is not permanent.
It can take 15–20 years to build something valuable.
It can unravel in months.


 Markets shift.

Government policy changes.

Cost bases rise.

Capital structures matter.


Just because your business was worth £X last year doesn’t mean it’s protected next year.


As founders, we have to stay vigilant.
Focused.
Disciplined.


Going fast is exciting.
But sustainable scale requires perspective, challenge, and people around you prepared to question decisions, not just cheer them on.

Really sad outcome.
Important lessons.
If you’re scaling right now, the question isn’t “How fast can we grow?”
It’s “Are we building something resilient?”
