It always makes me smile when we meet clients and candidates in the US for the first time and they say…

 “Wait - you’re British?!”

That’s usually followed by a moment of amusement when we casually drop certain words into conversation.

A few favourites that seem to cause confusion:

• “Brilliant” – which we use for absolutely everything

• “Fortnight” – which apparently sounds like it belongs in a period drama

• “Pop me a note” – which has prompted more than a few puzzled looks

We don’t even think about it - it’s just everyday language to us.

It’s a small reminder of how global business really is. One minute you’re discussing leadership strategy in New York, the next you’re explaining that “fortnight” simply means two weeks.

What other words or phrases do we Brits use all the time that completely throw our American clients and candidates?!
