OpenAI just scaled back Instant Checkout. We weren't surprised at all.

The assumption was that AI agents would own the full purchase path. Browse, add to cart, pay. All automated. The future of commerce.

Perplexity sends the biggest spenders. People go there to research before they buy something expensive. The AOVs reflect that. 

🤖 Claude sends the highest converters, and solid order values too. Technical buyer. Shows up knowing what they want. Buys it. 

🤖 Gemini and Copilot are smaller. Growing. Worth watching. 

You already think this way about paid. 
Meta traffic doesn't look like Google traffic. 
Branded search doesn't convert like broad match. 

You'd never lump them together. 
So stop lumping AI sources together. 
Each platform carries different intent. 

That intent shows up in cart size, conversion rate, and bounce behavior the second someone hits your site. So segment it accordingly, your AI channel mix already has more signal than you're reading.

The highest per-capita AI commerce adoption in the US isn't in San Francisco.
It's Washington DC.

The DC/Maryland/Virginia corridor shows the highest per-capita AI commerce adoption rate on our platform above the national average, even above Silicon Valley.

This tells us something important about where AI-assisted shopping behavior actually comes from. It's not about tech culture, it's about how people work.

Knowledge workers like policy professionals, researchers, analysts, consultants all use AI tools all day to process information, evaluate options, and make decisions. That behavior doesn't stop when they close Slack and open a browser to shop.

These are people who've already internalized "ask an AI first, then decide." The leap to "ask an AI for product recommendations" is really small.

This challenges the assumption that AI commerce is a Silicon Valley bubble. It's not a geography story, it's a workflow story.

As AI becomes more embedded in how people work, in law firms, consulting offices, newsrooms, government agencies, it bleeds into how they shop. DC is just further along that curve.

The behavior started at knowledge-worker desks. It will spread from there.

What does this suggest about who your AI-first customer actually is?

Meanwhile the real leak is sitting somewhere else entirely.

We've been tracking AI-referred shopping data weekly. Two weeks ago, the numbers got interesting. This week, they got undeniable.

Two consecutive weeks of double-digit growth in AI referral volume, orders, and revenue. AI-referred shoppers convert ~50% higher and generate ~72% more revenue per session than organic traffic.

Passion fuels my drive for the business and supply chain world, and it all stems from the remarkable legacy of my grandfather, Morris Rosenzweig.
