In 2008, I launched Careerminds as a global virtual outplacement company. The concept of virtual outplacement was developed after experiencing years of traditional outplacement in a variety of HR roles. The one thing I have come to learn and appreciate is layoffs are incredibly stressful and a one size fits all approach doesn't work anymore, particularly today with five generations in the workforce as well as massive shift to hybrid and remote work.

When we started the company early on, we had one mission: to reduce the stress our participants and clients face during layoffs and to help those displaced participants ultimately find their dream job. Everything we do is aimed at achieving this mission.

I once interviewed a woman who cried every day before walking into the hospital.

Her name is Dakota Barker. 

For most, she had the "perfect" career, a 6-figure salary as a Physician Assistant, a stable medical profession, & a life dedicated to nurturing pediatric cancer patients.

But in reality, she was experiencing what I call ‘identity foreclosure’.

As a former competitive athlete, Dakota believed that winners never quit.

If she started a bad book, she had to finish it. 

If she started a medical degree, she had to stay in it - no matter the cost to her mental health.

COVID exacerbated that situation.

She found herself becoming increasingly snippy at home & filled with dread each morning.

It grew so bad, she realized that she had to “clock out” of medicine, and consider a new plan that was radically different with a lot of uncertainty, “Real Estate Investments”.

Despite the fact that she was trading the “prestige” of a medical career for the “stigma” of becoming an ‘evil’ real estate investor, with people even saying:

"Oh, you're going to be one of those evil landlords? My daughter would hate you."

But she did it anyway, by:
1. Leaning into her transferable skills
Being a good medical practitioner & a good real estate investor require the same core skill: Diagnostic communication

In medicine, she asked open-ended questions to find a cure.

In real estate, she asked questions to understand a seller’s/tenant’s needs.

2. Reconciling Values
This was the hardest part. Dakota grew up with a "Why" centered on helping people. Easy to find in medicine. Trickier in real estate, which people instinctively consider "evil." 

But for Dakota, she believes she is still helping people by:
	▪️ Providing clean, safe housing
	▪️ Helping families build generational wealth 
	▪️ Helping tenants find resources to help with rent

3. Adopting the “want more to give more” philosophy
The more wealth she builds, the more resources she now has to donate and help others. While spending time with her family in a way that she never could.

Dakota’s WHY hasn’t changed.

She still loves, and continues to, help people.
It’s only the context that has changed.

And if there’s one thing we can learn from her story, it is this:

You don't have to abandon who you are. 

You just understand what you actually value - and find new ways to express it.

“What the hell does it matter what age you are?”

That’s what Rick Bleiweiss said in our recent interview on the Clocking Out podcast.

And he’s the living embodiment of not letting age define who you are, and what you can do.

He published his first novel at the tender age of 77 (which went on to become a #1 Amazon bestseller!)

Before that, he reinvented himself 5 times: rock musician, record producer, senior music executive & publishing leader.

Which included: 
✓ Opening for Three Dog Night and Leslie West
✓ Producing 50+ singles and albums
✓ Earning a Grammy nomination

Until Napster entered the scene, increasing the pressure to turn every record into a hit, with no financial room to fail.

That took the joy out of his work, which is when Rick decided to retire in his late 50s. But…

Retirement didn’t stick.

He moved from New York to Oregon. 

Got married. 

Sat on the board of nonprofits like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Ashland Independent Film Festival & the Ashland Emergency Food Bank and was on the president's advisory board of Southern Oregon University for 10 years.

All of which was fulfilling but… also not quite fulfilling enough.

Then his neighbor, a published poet, told him to join their writer’s group.

“Maybe it’ll give you a flame.”

It did.

Rick started writing short stories which turned into novels.

Then at 77, he published his first book.

Today, at nearly 80, Rick is:
✓ Head of New Business Development at Blackstone Publishing
✓ An acclaimed novelist
✓ A podcaster (interviewing everyone from Whoopi Goldberg to Clive Davis)
✓ Recording music (his recent single hit #4 on world indie charts)

His mantra:

"You're never too old to chase the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. As long as you have the energy and the passion, why not? We don't shrivel up and die as we get old."

If there’s one thing I hope you’ll take away from Rick’s episode, it’s the fact that reinvention can happen at every age. 

Just go find something you can get passionate about!
