But when I ended up in sales I realized it was the same skill...understand a situation deeply, then tell a persuasive story around it. The further I got in my career the more I kept seeing the same thing. Companies hit the same walls at the same stages and made the same (avoidable) mistakes. And most of the advice for founders was either way too complicated or built for someone else's business. I didn't want to manage bigger teams at bigger companies. I wanted to help founders solve sales problems before they burned 12-18 months figuring it out the hard way. Decide from the perspective of who you want to become

11 years ago I graduated from law school, and decided to bet on startups instead. I was living in Manila where I had no experience in that world, no network, and not even the “right” CV for it. Here’s the steps I took that helped me build a sales career from scratch:

1. Declare yourself to the world, as the person who you want to be
What others don't know, they can't help you with. So I started saying it out loud, everywhere. “Hi I’m Cassie, I’m interested in a sales role at a startup.” I said it at networking events, to (new) friends; even on dates (!), which generated my first interviews whereas previously I couldn't get past the ATS.

2. Make any decision at all, into that direction
Spending years getting a degree and then realizing it wasn't for me, wasn't an easy decision. But there is no perfect decision, and the longer you wait, the more your options fade. The best next step is often the one you actually take. What you don’t step into can’t become real, because you never gave it a chance to enter your life. 

3. Choose the uncomfortable decision
Actions create opportunities that your fear might have hidden from you. If you are stuck at the threshold of pursuing that next big step forward: go for the uncomfortable decision that scares you. There is often a reward for doing, learning from and completing something difficult.  

4. Your environment is stronger than you
Put yourself in the environment of the person you want to become. Your surroundings shape you more than your motivation does. Once I committed to startups, I went to every startup event I could find. Events, talks, communities. That environment taught me the language, the context, and the confidence that helped me land my first role 2 months later.
