Two months after a company wide rollout of new AI tools, the steering group met for a progress review.

The dashboard looked strong.

When your job feels at risk overnight, your brain flips into defend mode and every move starts to look like a 'just in case.'

After 20+ years leading people through restructures, here's what I've seen happen over and over.

Got a call last night from a colleague mid-restructure.

'They want bullet points. To justify my role. Just in case.'

You could hear the panic through the phone.

Then came the anger. Years of delivery. Results. Impact. And now this? Suddenly I'm invisible. Suddenly I'm disposable.

Here are 3 ways I wouldn't recommend handling workplace uncertainty:

1️⃣React fast (and signal panic)

When fear hits, our instinct is to defend and prove our worth instantly. This creates desperation energy that others can sense.

2️⃣Take it personally and let emotions drive your work

Carrying anger and resentment into daily tasks affects your performance and relationships. You'll eventually take it out on the wrong person.

3️⃣Try to control everything around you

Attempting to manage every outcome during chaos is exhausting and impossible. It drains your energy from what actually matters.

This is what we're working on together 👇 

✅Creating space to pause. We're stepping back from the noise, focusing on current tasks, and letting emotions settle before making decisions. 

👉Result: Within 48 hours, they're regaining clarity and stopping the panic spiral.

✅Asking the hard questions. What are they really afraid of? Losing the role, the income, or their identity? We're facing it directly together. 

👉Result: They're identifying what matters most and where to focus their energy.

✅Building a plan for what they can control. We're identifying gaps, listing actions within their power, and taking intentional steps forward. 

👉Result: They're entering conversations prepared, confident, and with 3+ options beyond their current role.

I once saw a large transformation where dashboards looked perfect, teams were meeting targets, and leaders felt confident.

Ever had one of those hours at work where everything feels… heavy?

Not because the work is hard but because you feel invisible in it.

Today was one of those moments for me.

You've fought fires nobody saw.
You're accountable for outcomes.
You've built teams through messy phases.

And yet somehow, in the noise of meetings and shifting priorities, it feels like your contribution is standing just outside the spotlight.

And in that moment, the thoughts creep in:

"Is this worth the emotional tax?"
"Why am I even doing this?"
"Should I just step away?"

It's not anger. It's a quiet frustration mixed with fatigue. 
The kind that makes you want to close the laptop and disappear for a while.

What helped me shake it off wasn't pretending the feeling wasn't real.

I could breathe again. 
I could see the bigger arc instead of the sharp edge of the hour.

Sometimes it's about steering yourself through moments where quitting feels easier than continuing.
